Nottingham's volunteer-led contemporary art gallery is a social enterprise, aimed at celebrating and fostering local talent. The gallery began life as Turtle Arts back in 1999, having been opened by opened by a group of Nottingham Trent University graduates. It became Surface Gallery in 2002 and moved to its current location in Nottingham's Creative Quarter.
