This is three sites in one: Uffington Castle isn't exactly a castle, more like a very regular-shaped hill, but it was once an Iron Age hill fort dating from the 7th or 8th centuy BC. Nearby is Dragon Hill, a natural chalk hill with an artificial flat top, where legend has it that St George slew his pesky giant reptile, although what a Greco-Roman soldier from Palestine was doing in Berkshire is anyone's guess. Finally, there's the White Horse -- a giant prehistoric image of a horse, literally carved into the chalk hillside by prehistoric landscapers sometime around the end of the Bronze Age. The National Trust operates a pay-and-display car park on the site. The sites are all accessible from Ridgeway National Trail, but Thames Travel bus 67 runs to Kingston Lisle, c. 1 mile away.
