Ogbert The Nerd

Ogbert The Nerd

10 Oct 2025 - 10 Oct 2025

Sugar-free presents: ogbert the nerd + guests Ogbert The Nerd are a four-piece punk/emo band from New Brunswick, New Jersey that formed in 2018. They dropped an EP the following year, their debut full-length in 2020, and their sophomore effort, What You Want back in July of 2024. "The band plays a punchier, more frenetic version of emo revival, with doubled vocals that demand every line be shouted along with. These songs are catchy, their lyrics poignant, and the energy unbridled, all telltale signs of a solid emo/punk release" - Sophies Floorboard Presented by Sugar-Free Records. This is an 18+ event
Sound Affects #31: Phil King, Peta Lily, Rebecca Lin & Jonathan Scott
Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. Speakers: Phil King - Musician who played in Felt, Lush, The Jesus & Mary Chain and loads of other mint bands. He works as Picture Editor and Editorial Researcher for UNCUT magazine. He made a documentary about his time touring in Lush - 'A Far From Home Movie', which we screened at our sister night, Video Affects. Phil also compiles music compilations - Junkshop Glam ones in the past - such as Glitterbest, All The Young Droogs and Boobs - and more recently a compilation of Junkshop Synth-Pop called All The Young Droids. The latter is what he will be talking about at Sounds Affects. He'll be in conversation with Peta Lily. Peta Lily- Peta wrote I Am A Timebomb with Roy Nicolson (aka Michael Process) in the basement of a shared boho flat in Fulham in 1980. Born in Australia, now a UK resident, Lily was then the co-founder of an Edinburgh Fringe First winning touring theatre company. She continues to work in theatre as a director, performer, theatre maker, drama lecturer and workshop leader. She is now also a cabaret artist, continuing to write songs with Roy Nicolson in her alter ego drag persona Parker Dee. Follow Parker @parkerdeeking [https://www.instagram.com/parkerdeeking/?hl=en] and Peta@petalily [https://www.instagram.com/petalily/?hl=en] and www.petalily.com. See her perform in London @CrazyCoqs on 12 November 2025. Rebecca Lin- She was meant to speak at our event last month but had to rearrange. Rebecca is a British-Taiwanese cultural researcher, youth advocate, and storyteller from Leicester, whose work explores identity, education, and sovereignty across the globe. Drawing on her journey from organising grassroots gigs in the UK to curating exhibitions amplifying mixed-heritage and indigenous voices in Taiwan, she highlights how localised music movements and subcultures have shaped her own sense of belonging, revealing music as a universal vehicle for youth expression, democratic participation, and decolonial resistance. Jonathan Scott- Writer and record collector. His book 'The Vinyl Frontier' is about the making of a Golden Record that NASA fixed to the side of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977. 'Into the Groove' is the story of recorded sound, from tin foil to vinyl. He gave a talk at Sound Affects back in December and we loved him so much we've invited him back! 8 entry. 10 if you're feeling generous. 5 Low income. Sound Affects #32: Kate Magic, Dorothy Max Prior, Wildblood & Queenie
Speakers: Wildblood & Queenie- Celebrating three decades as a DJ duo, Wildblood and Queenie forever take pleasure in playing the finest disco and disco-infused house grooves on the dancefloors of club nights and on their 1BTN Radio Show (every 2nd & 4th Friday 13:00-16:00 101.4FM DAB+.). They're residents at Patterns in Brighton, have played Brighton Pride and Love Supreme, as well as their own club nights Shameless Hussies, and Housewife's Choice. Kate works with Queer Heritage South as a lesbian community champion, archiving queer stories from Brighton's past. Dorothy Max Prior- Writer and artist--London born and bred but currently living in Brighton. As an artist she works in performance, spoken word and sound installation. In her new book,'Sex is No Emergency: Adventures in a Post-Punk Wonderland', Max recalls her days as a ball room dancing tutor in South Kensington, drumming and touring with infamous experimental pansexual psychedelic rock group Psychic TV, exploring London and New York City's queer clubbing undergrounds, the tangled worlds of the UKs indie music scene at the height of its influence, performance art, and parenting. Kate Magic- DJ and writer. Her new book'88: The Untold Story of a Revolution'reclaims the ecstatic, political, and spiritual roots of the UK rave movement. Kate was there in those early heady days, and subsequently spent a long time asking herself, "What really happened?" This book is her attempt to answer that question, drawing on interviews with nearly 100 people who were there too, in the fields and the basements, hands in the air. Acid house wasnt just a party. It was a revolution. 8 entry. 10 if you're feeling generous. 5 Low income. NOTAFLOF Doors at 7.30pm, it begins at 8 and is over by 10.30pm. East Street Tap in Brighton.
