Katie Spencer

Katie Spencer

3 Jun 2026 - 3 Jun 2026

Presented by our friends at From The Whitehouse, who write: Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer's landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer's music, which you can listen to right here: katiespencerofficial.bandcamp.com The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70s folk and songwriter movements. Katie Spencer's widely celebrated new album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. The inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. As live music has returned to our world, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more, eyes closed, in the moment, performing. Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music. Guitarist Magazine One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections Ive encountered in some time. RnR Magazine ★★★★★ Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician. Record Collector A timeless English folk album, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning. Shindig! Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and, to conjure a name we hear less often these days, Bridget St John. Prog Magazine The way Katie plays is never contrived, showy or imitative; it sounds true a world-class folk guitarist fRoots Katie's guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar's strings and produces little tapestries of song Ralph McTell katiespencer.net facebook.com/katiespencermusic twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic instagram.com/katiespencermusic Ashburton Arts Centre Always three prices please pay what you can. This sonata was written in 1886 for Ysaye and is considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. The setting for cello and piano was the only alternative version sanctioned by Franck. This was created by the renowned cellist Jules Delsart. After thorough historical study based on reliable documents, Delsart's transcription for cello where the piano part remains the same as in the violin sonata was published by G. Henle Verlag as an Urtext edition. Based on oral history by Pablo Casals and a letter written by Antoine Ysaye, Eugène Ysaÿe's son, it has often been speculated that the work was first conceived as a sonata for cello and piano, and only later reset for violin and piano when the commission from Eugène Ysaÿe arrived. Michael Kevin Jones The English cellist, Michael Kevin Jones was born in Watford and studied Music Performance Piano/Cello at the Royal College of Music in London. While a student there he was chosen to play for the royal family and awarded a German government scholarship for further study in Köln. Michael has found a unique place for himself among today's performers. After his studies he quickly became solo cellist and toured the world with top musical groups. He has developed a non-conventional career incorporating multi-musical activities and is also a teacher and coach. As member of 'the Jones Maruri cello guitar duo, Michael had his first top 10 selling CD 'Original music for cello and guitar' in Hong Kong and China and as a soloist his recording of the complete J.S. Bach' Cello Suites (BWV 1007) on a 1667 Stradivarius cello for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has received international critical acclaim and several audio awards. He has recently started performing with John Bryden with whom he studied piano at Dartington College of Arts and they have just released their first album Cello Meditation together. John Bryden Pianist John Bryden was born in Edinburgh and went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The trio bring together the exhilarating, joyful tumble of Celtic trad, a melodic warmth, vibrant rhythmic invention, and the subtle expressivity of jazz harmony. Tunes unfold like stories, with dynamic and textured arrangements keeping the pages turning, from chapters of luminous stillness into passages of unstoppable drive. All performed with a compelling combination of fire, precision and mongrel bite. The trio have become renowned for their captivating live performances, including at Caceres Irish Fleadh (Spain), Zilleghem Folk (Belgium), Broadstairs Folk Festival, and Celtic Connections Glasgow. He has played on stages from Lewes Guitar Festival to the Barbican. Past collaborations include Horses Brawl, with experimental early music composer/performer Laura Cannell; and Alma, with leading English folk fiddlers John Dipper and Emily Askew. Fieldwork: Music and Dance Collaboration
This performance is curated by Yolande Snaith who writes: Fieldwork is an exploration of what arises out of the empty field of awareness within which we are all present - listening, sensing, seeing, choice making, moment by moment - composing collectively in real time. This diverse ensemble of highly experienced dancers and musicians have come together through several years of open weekly practice at Ashburton Arts Centre, collaboratively excavating the field of possibilities of interdisciplinary improvisation. Fieldwork is our first more-focussed project, aiming to structure an intentional journey through different atmospheric, dynamic, emotional and qualitative fields of sound and movement. The structure serves as a kind of map for the performers to navigate - feeling their way through and making moment to moment relational choices within their respective dance vocabularies and musical instrumentations. Each individual contributes to the creation of the collective whole. Nothing is fixed. The door into new exploration and discovery is always open. Just East of Jazz

Just East of Jazz

26 Apr 2026 - 26 Apr 2026

Just East of Jazz has arrived at an extraordinary synthesis of sound, colour, light and imagery the apotheosis of a musical idea whose roots go back to 1993. Back then JEOJ gained a reputation as one of the first and best groups to explore the connections between jazz and klezmer, but quickly developed a sound and approach all their own, and over time took in a much wider range of influences. Their writing embodies their personal and idiosyncratic concept and compositional style, a collective voice which fans recognise and love. Joining the core line-up of saxophonist Jeremy Shoham, percussionist Rick Finlay and bassist Phil Scragg, in their latest incarnation the band welcomes keyboard wizard Danny Manners. Manners's musical background includes a lengthy period with award-winning prog rock band Big Big Train, as well as many collaborations with French singer-songwriter Louis Philippe as bassist, keyboardist and arranger, and work with alternative socialist big band The Happy End. The band has a uniquely off-beam take on contemporary music, incorporating world, folk, prog and classical influences in their impressionistic style. Composition and improvisation are seamlessly linked, an approach that has led to favourable comparisons with fusion pioneers Weather Report and prog rock innovators Gong. a restlessly virtuosic display of exceptionally punchy rhythmic precision and tight but flighty improvisation Jazzwise Ashburton Arts Centre Always three prices please pay what you can. Martha Tilston

Martha Tilston

2 Apr 2026 - 21 Oct 2026

Martha has constantly experimented with her musical parameters. In the early days this meant singing the folk songs she had know since childhood one week and recording electronica and trip-hop the next. Her new tour is a sparky union of folk, acoustic, trip-hop and electronica. With her longtime collaborators and musicians Matt Tweed and Matt Kelly, among others they entwine raw vocals, sparkling melodies and thought provoking lyrics with filmic movements and earthy baselines. To see them live is to connect with longed-for parts of ourselves.
