Attila The Stockbroker

Attila The Stockbroker

8 May 2025 - 21 Jun 2025

Mix of seating and standing. disabled access and toilet. Attila the Stockbroker launches Heart on my Sleeve, his new Collected Works Exploding into public consciousness in the early 1980s via two John Peel sessions and a Melody Maker front cover, poet, musician, journalist and political activist, Attila The Stockbroker, has spent forty years touring the world performing his unique brand of spoken word, poetry and music. Having played almost four thousand gigs in twenty four countries, releasing countless books and records along the way, Attila's Collected Works has just been published by Cherry Red Books, the book arm of the celebrated independent record label which released his early 80s albums and his 2015 autobiography Arguments Yard. 'Heart On My Sleeve' brings together Attila's collected poems and lyrics, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of his first appearance and a lifetime doing what he loves. All his early political punk poetry classics are here, the likes of 'A Bang And A Wimpy', 'Russians In The DHSS' and 'Contributory Negligence', alongside more recent favourites such as 'Asylum-Seeking Daleks', 'Poison Pensioner' and 'The Bible According to Rupert Murdoch'. This collection is testimony to Attila's broadening work over the years, packed full of intensely personal pieces alongside political satire and humour. 'Never Too Late', explores his reconciliation with his stepfather after thirty-seven years (as featured on Radio 3's 'The Verb' and Steve Lamacq's 6Music show), whilst listeners to Radio 4's'Poetry Please' may recall 'The Long Goodbye', the epic, fourteen minute poem to Attila's mother as she battled Alzheimer's Disease, which was twice broadcast on the show. Recent poems written during the first lockdown are included too. Featuring over a hundred and eighty works hand-picked by Attila himself, Heart On My Sleeve is a must-read compendium of social commentary, human observation and humour, all of it written with a passion and enthusiasm which only seems to grow as Attila passes through the years. 336 pages, illustrated by long-time collaborators Phill 'Porky the Poet' Jupitus, Womble, Dan Woods and Nick Staples. A legend of the international spoken word circuit, a long established Glastonbury regular, much loved at Brighton And Hove Albion Football Club, co organiser of Glastonwick popular beer and music festival, Attila The Stockbroker remains as focussed and active as ever, and continues to perform to audiences across the world, including a run of successful recent online lockdown shows. His message remains a simple one: you don't need to be 'a celebrity' to lead a life earning your living doing what you love to do. You just need a way with words, the self-confidence and organisational ability of Napoleon and skin thicker than the armour of a Chieftain tank. Heart On My Sleeve will be available at the gig along with Attila's earlier works. If you want a copy before then you can get one direct from Attila at attilathestockbroker.bandcamp.com or in any self-respecting bookshop.
Ellie Gowers

Ellie Gowers

31 May 2025 - 31 May 2025

Emerging onto the UK folk scene with her debut album, Dwelling by the Weir (2022), Ellie explored folklore and stories of her hometown, Warwick, through ecological, sociological, and personal themes (Full of delicacy, precision, and gentle delight, The Guardian). It connected with wider audiences and secured her a place on the UK touring circuit. After the release of her celebrated album, Ellie has continued to firmly root herself in the songwriting scene. However this time, her new music amplifies her writing; referencing the more contemporary sounds of MIPSO and Jeff Buckley. After a heavy year of touring away from home, themes of absence, push/pull, and longing emerge from this new and exciting direction. Summer 2024 saw the arrival of new music. To date the EP has enjoyed airplay from BBC Radio 2 (Mark Radcliffe), BBC6 Music (Lauren Laverne Fantastic Beats feature) Ellie toured the UK Supporting Gemma Hayes in October 2024 and this included a first appearance at the prestigious Union Chapel. Following the release of her single, The Stars Are Ours, BBC Radio 2 beckoned for a really impressive (Mark Radcliffe) live session which was widely lauded (absolutely beautiful, Zoe Ball). Ellie has composed music for BBC Radio 3's production of Middlemarch and toured as support act for a number of artists including Blair Dunlop and Elephant Sessions. Milkweed

Milkweed

27 May 2025 - 27 May 2025

Milkweed is two anonymous musicians. They recently appeared in a live session on Radio 3's Late Junction, where Verity Sharp said that they commune with the spirits of the past[and] cast some great lo-fi spells For three years Milkweed have refined a formula taking existing source material (a folklore journal, a book on Welsh myths, another on bronze age human remains), cutting up the words and feeding them through a woodchipper of lo-fi production and experimental folk music. This time, however, they decided to push themselves further to use all 400 pages of Thomas Kinsella's masterful translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, rather than manipulated snippets. After it took an entire year just to process 20 pages, however, G found herself humbled. It made me appreciate oral traditions in a completely different way, the intensity with which you had to engage with the work to feel like you could understand and transmit it. Exile of the Sons of Uisliu is one of many remscéla, or pre-tales, leading up to the Táin. In the text, Derdriu, the loveliest woman in all Ireland, has been raised in isolation until she is ready for the bed of Conchobor, high king of Ulster. Derdriu falls in love with Noisiu, one of the sons of Uisliu, and together they escape to Alba where they again find themselves in peril. They are lured back to Ulster by Conchobor, but are ultimately betrayed. Blue Rose Code (duo)

Blue Rose Code (duo)

13 Jun 2025 - 13 Jun 2025

Blue Rose Code come into 2025 with a fresh wind in their sails. The last year saw sparkling reviews in the national press for award winning album, 'Bright Circumstance', radio play on BBC R2 & R6 as well as an appearance on the R4 institution 'Loose Ends'. Folk album of the year with 5-stars in the Scotsman, their song 'Sadie' nominated for Song Of The Year at the Americana awards, a headline Sunday night closing slot at the legendary Cambridge Folk Festival, 2024 was a great year. Adding to that, Ross Wilson is now an in demand co-writer, with one of his songs written with legend Steve Knightley appearing on Knightley's brand new record. Just read the quotes, they're no joke, from The Times, Uncut, The Spectator. No gimmicks here. No smoke and mirrors and no mistake. In the words of Americana UK, One of the country's best live acts right now! Get out and see them wherever you can! A set of almost religious intensity and sincerity. Wilson makes widescreen soul in the spirit of Van Morrison, and was full of the holy fire of live performance. The Times The songs and playing on this album are quite exquisite, emotionally involving, and have a real depthwithout doubt an absolute classic. Louder Than War Jubilant, prayerful, compassionate, Caledonian soul maestro Ross Wilson's latest iteration of his Blue Rose Code band sees his songs bursting with heart. The Scotsman An expert ensemble, led by Edinburgh singer-songwriter Ross Wilson, brought the spontaneity and informality of an after-hours pub session to the Pavilion Theatre. Ahmed Dickinson and Eduardo Martín: virtuoso guitar duo from Cuba
When Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas first heard the music of fellow countryman Eduardo Martín, he felt euphoric. Martín's style has an expansive sense of freedom that taps into pre-Columbus traditions, jazz, flamenco, pop, Afro and traditional Cuban. The guitar is his favoured instrument to mirror the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of the Americas cultural diversity. Before moving to England, Dickinson Cárdenas took lessons with Eduardo. Since then, their friendship, idiosyncratic empathy and mutual respect have transformed into a vehicle that connects, incorporates, and juxtaposes their different generations, musical ideas and, ultimately, a spiritual journey that drives this unique duo. The show compiles some of Grammy nominee composer Eduardo's most alluring works for two guitars. Prepare to listen to classical styles merged with rock and son montunos, old Yoruba chants or feel-good rumbas with funk- boleros, and new-age tunes and cinematic pieces sitting alongside Cuban tumbaos with slap bass. ahmeddickinson.squarespace.com/about

An evening with Jim Mullen (UK jazz and funk guitar legend) and friends
Here's something a little different conversation with a living legend of the British jazz scene combined with a concert. Guitarist Jim Mullen has lived a lifetime in jazz and has played his part in its evolution since the 1960s. Self-taught from records and friends in his native Glasgow, his talent and drive took him to London and from there to worldwide fame as part of the Morrissey-Mullen band, a jazz funk outfit that rode the crest of the wave of popularity for that genre in the 1970s and 80s. Since then he remained a stalwart of the London scene and has met and played with many of the greats in jazz from Gene Harris to Jimmy Smith, Mose Allison to Claire Martin. Jim will be in conversation with his friend and long-time drummer Tristan Mailliot and will discuss his influences, his unique approach to guitar technique and his reflections on a life immersed in jazz. Music is a tough but rewarding vocation and this will be of interest to musicians and music fans alike. After a short interval Jim will join vocalist Zoe Francis, Tristan and Tom Ball on the house Hammond organ to play an extended set of songs from the Great American songbook, both well known and rare. This band went down very well last year so it should be a great evening. Zoe Francis - voice Jim Mullen - guitar Tom Ball - organ Tristan Mailliot - drums Zoe Francis is a devoted proponent of the Great American songbook popularised by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita ODay and Billie Holiday. She tells the story of the songs she chooses with a poised and flawless delivery. Having trained in New York with one of bebop's leading lights, Barry Harris, she has played in all the big London clubs and at many festivals around the country, mixing with the best musicians (Jim, Tristan, Ross Stanley, Gareth Williams) as attested by her three albums. She will be presenting well known songs as well as choice selections from the lesser known canon, always crafted into enticing arrangements. Jim Mullen has been around in jazz since the 1960s, soaking up and indeed influencing the different directions it's taken since then. Figures of his stature rarely venture West and we are excited to present him in Torquay along with premier drummer, long time collaborator and friend, Tristan Mailliot. Growing up in Glasgow, Jim bought his first arch top guitar aged 14 and learned everything he could from other local musicians and from listening to the American West Coast records that some of them owned, copying Barney Kessel and Wes Montgomery early on. As a young man he formed a jazz group with sax player Malcolm Duncan and keyboardist Roger Ball, who went on to form the Average White Band, a group with which he later toured and recorded. Moving to London in the late 1960s, Jim's first professional job was as a musician for the poet Pete Brown, today remembered as a song lyricist on the legendary Wheels of Fire album by Cream. After recording two albums with Pete Brown's band, Mullen moved on to Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. After appearing on the band's first three albums he joined the band Kokomo and in the mid-1970s he joined forces with tenor saxophonist Dick Morrissey to form the Morrissey-Mullen Band, a tremendously popular jazz-funk outfit where they both carved out a niche in UK jazz history, with multiple TV appearances and international tours. Following 15 years and 6 albums with Morrisey-Mullen, Jim formed various groups playing with some of London's top musicians including Mornington Lockett, Dave OHiggins, Gary Husband, Mick Hutton, Gareth Williams, Stan Sulzmann, Gareth Lockrane, Mike Gorman, Matt Skelton and Tristan Mailliot. He's been featured on the Paul McCartney-produced All About the Music and more recently on the Citrus Sun album, People of Tomorrow, produced by Incognito co-founder, Jean-Paul Bluey Maunick. In the last few years he recorded two organ trio albums and Volunteers (for a large ensemble arranged by Lockrane) and Bumpin', a tribute to Wes Montgomery's music with singer Claire Martin. Other "names" in Jim's CV include the great blues pianist Gene Harris, with whom he toured extensively, Mose Allison, Teddy Edwards, Plas Johnson (famed for the Pink Panther theme), Jimmy Smith and Georgie Fame. Tristan Mailliot is one of London's top drummers and has played with everyone and anyone on the scene. Tristan leads his own bands including the Loire All Stars, a jazz funk band and a Chick Corea project with Tom Ridout, a young jazz musician of the year finalist. Tristan has known Hammond organist Tom Ball for many years and together they have organised this South West tour. Always three prices please pay what you can. Martha Tilston

Martha Tilston

23 May 2025 - 21 Oct 2025

Martha has constantly experimented with her musical parameters. In the early days this meant singing the folk songs she had know since childhood one week and recording electronica and trip-hop the next. Her new tour is a sparky union of folk, acoustic, trip-hop and electronica. With her longtime collaborators and musicians Matt Tweed and Matt Kelly, among others they entwine raw vocals, sparkling melodies and thought provoking lyrics with filmic movements and earthy baselines. To see them live is to connect with longed-for parts of ourselves.
