Explore the extraordinary world of Charles Waterton, creator of the world’s first nature reserve. Are you brave enough to stand on top of the caiman? Imagine life as a nineteenth century prisoner in Wakefield Jail, discover the area’s rugby heritage, hear the strange crackle that forced rhubarb makes when growing, learn the hardships of war throughout the ages and relive the stories of people who have worked, lived and played in the city. Little visitors can dress up in vintage outfits, play with the Rhubarb Express train and cook up a storm in the 1950’s kitchen. Pick up a Digitrail for an alternative way of experiencing the museum. Wakefield Museum is located on the lower level of Wakefield One. The Free City Bus stops just outside and Westgate Railway Station is only a two minute walk away.

Home Education: Ancient Sea Animals - Ages 5
Millions of years ago the ancient seas were full of fantastic marine animals! Today, we can learn all about them by exploring their stoney remains and examining what the fossil record can tell us. Wakefield's past has lots of links with moving images! Create a felt bird sewing case to keep all your essential sewing supplies to hand. Discover the story of local woman Mary Frances Heaton, who was wrongly institutionalised in the 1800s. She told her story through sewing samplers. Urban Sketching: Wakefield City Centre
Let's sketch! Pop along for an afternoon of urban sketching. We will start at Wakefield Museum and then head out around the city centre. Urban sketching is nothing complicated. It's just people getting together to have a go at sketching what they can see, wherever they are. Please note: there is no tuition in this session. But, there will be pencils, paper and lots of encouragement on hand. Discover how aging stones can hide hidden nature kingdoms. Find out how moss can support ecosystems. Make your own kokedama moss ball to take home. This workshop is designed for teenagers aged 12 to 16. Accompanying adults are welcome, but not essential.
