Described by International Piano Magazine as one of the most gifted pianists of his generation,Mark Viner is steadily gaining a reputation as one of Britains leading concert pianists. He is particularly renowned for his CD recordings on the Piano Classics label which include music by Alkan, Blumenfeld, Chaminade, Liszt and Thalberg, all of which have garnered exceptional international critical acclaim. His most important project to date is a survey of the complete piano music of Alkan: the first of its kind and which is expected to run to some 18 CDs in length. Aside from a busy schedule of concerts and teaching, he is also a published composer and writer and his advocacy for the music of Alkan led to his election as Chairman the Alkan Society. Recital with Julian Metzger [cello] and Paul Turner [piano] at Buscot Park Theatre. CellistJulian Metzger has an exciting multifaceted career as a chamber musician, orchestral player, soloist and teacher. Concerts have taken him throughout UK, Europe and the Far East where he has become a sought-after chamber musician collaborating with eminent performers. These collaborations have taken place on concert platforms worldwide in addition to festivals such as the Buckingham Summer Festival, Beaminster Festival, Malcolm Arnold Festival, Musicfest Aberystwyth and the International Casals Festival in El Vendrell. Julian frequently enjoys concerts as principal and sub-principal cellist with orchestras such as the English Symphony Orchestra, the London Gala Orchestra, the Orchestra of Stowe Opera and Orchestra Pro Anima. He teaches cello and coaches chamber music at the Purcell School, Kimbolton School, Bedford Girls' School and the Royal Latin School, and also teaches a small select number of private students. For many years he has coached the cello section of the Bedfordshire County Youth Orchestra; he has given many masterclasses and tutors frequently on the Benslow Chamber music courses. With his chamber music colleagues Paul Turner and Lisa Nelsen, he founded Enigma14, a trio that aims to introduce today's concert-goers to chamber music for lesser-known combinations of instruments. Paul Turner is a widely experienced soloist and chamber music player renowned for his sensitive playing. He excels in a wide range of genres as demonstrated in recent events, which include: performances of Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F; his National Theatre debut with Maria Ewing in a celebration for the life of Sir Peter Hall; the Ralph Vaughan Williams festival with Jack Liebeck and members of the Sacconi Quartet; Kings College Cambridge with Nicholas Daniel during Easter week; Ligeti Hommage a Brahms with Martin Owen; recording with Miranda Dale for the Proust Society and a new collaboration with BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist, saxophonist Robert Burton. Paul has been involved in some other recording projects. They include Ithaka by Lydia Kakabadse with Clare McCaldin (divine art), Paul Carr I Offer You Love (Stone Records) and Roads to Freedom (a reaction to the war in Ukraine) by Anastasia Pavlyk, written for Paul. Live events include performances of Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition, further presentations of Ligetis Hommage a Brahms with the Owen Trio, a celebration of female composers with Julian Metzger and performances of the Faur and Saint-Sans piano quartets with the Bochmann Trio. An honours graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, he won many prizes and awards culminating in the Queens Commendation for Excellence and the Peter Pears Accompaniment Prize, adjudicated by Pears himself. Paul was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1996, a discretionary award given to past students in recognition of their contribution to the music profession. He studied music at the University of Bristol and continued his piano studies under the tutelage of Raymond Clarke. His recitals featured Liszt, Prokofiev and Ravels piano works. He won the University Concerto Competition in his final year, performing Shostakovichs 2nd Piano Concerto. Thomas was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music with distinction in 2019, with a specialism of 20th century piano music and a repertoire including Prokofievs 7th piano sonata, Ravels Gaspard de la Nuit and Messiaens Ile de Feu 1 and 2. He is active in choral accompanying and performing chamber music as well as solo repertoire. He has recently been appointed musical director of the prestigious Wessex Male Choir and conducted the choir during its latest tour, in Krakow, Poland, and its participation in the Cracovia Cantans 2019 competition, where it was awarded two first prizes. He has performed at a wide range of venues including the Welsh Millennium Centre and Colston Hall.
