James Grant

9 May 2025 - 31 May 2025

James Grant is simply one of the most renowned and respected musicians Scotland has ever produced. His career began in the early eighties with Friends Again. Although short-lived, their influence was huge, helping to define the emerging sound of the Scottish bands that followed them. It was in Love and Money that James found more widespread recognition; four albums, working with an array of legendary producers such as Gary Katz (Steely Dan) and Tom Dowd (Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin) several hit singles, a world-wide following and silver discs in the UK helped seal his reputation as one of the best songwriters in the country. He has shared the stage and worked with such luminaries as Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), BBKing, Pete Seeger, Nanci Griffiths, U2, Jeff Pocaro (Toto), Tim Schmidt (The Eagles), Tom Verlaine. He has released 6 solo albums and continues to record and perform.

Kate Young

Kate Young

25 May 2025 - 25 May 2025

Growing up immersed within a folk music background in Edinburgh, Kate Young has emerged as one Scotland’s most innovative composers and musicians. She is driven by the exploration of new sounds found in TRADITIONAL MUSICS AROUND THE GLOBE, which feed into her compositional world. As a musician, Kate combines voice with fiddle-playing techniques to conjure intriguing soundscapes as she navigates her way across musical genres. A recipient of the prestigious PAUL HAMLYN AWARD FOR COMPOSERS 2018, Kate has also toured globally with bands such as MOULETTES, (ELIZA CARTHY MBE) CARTHY, HARDY, FARRELL & YOUNG, KATHRYN TICKELL & THE DARKENING , HANNAH JAMES’S JIGDOLL ENSEMBLE. In 2015-16 she collaborated with ten folk musicians from Scotland and England, all women, for Songs of Separation, a record which gained ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’ AT THE BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARD in 2017. Her own band (previously known as KATE IN THE KETTLE) is focussed on her combining of composition for string quintet and song. Over the last five years she has developed her interests in British plant lore and folktales, learning directly from books and then weaving information into her songs and compositions as a means to perpetuate and empower traditions at high risk of being lost. She completed a significant commission for CELTIC CONNECTIONS’S NEW VOICES and wrote a suite of pieces around the theme of the natural world. Her response – a complete repertoire of songs inspired by British medicinal plants, set to STRING QUINTET, WITH HARP, DOUBLE BASS AND PERCUSSION – was met with wide acclaim. More recently, Kate has endeavoured to continue extending her creative and compositional research by studying a Masters’ degree in Scenography in Utrecht, Netherlands. “A wayward soundscape, whose eldritch tonalities, eerie harmonies and restive rhythmic layers skilfully skirted the familiar and orthodox” THE SCOTSMAN ACCESS: Seating is on a raised seating bank - Please note, wheelchair accessible spaces are not available to book online. Malin Lewis is an innovative, award winning, multi-instrumentalist melding Scottish West coast tradition with a newly invented, self-made bagpipe. They perform in a trio alongside Sally Simpson (Fiddle) and Ali Hutton (Guitar). Hair tingling, philosophical and dance inducing melodies inspired by European folk traditions, queerness and the universe. Having toured across the UK, Canada and Europe, Malin released their debut album ‘Halocline’ in May 2024 on Hudson Records. A Halocline is a visible layer that forms between salt and fresh water and is home to a unique microbial ecosystem. Halocline is a metaphor for Malin’s trans identity and living in a space in between; a beautiful space between a binary. Malin’s unique timbre is born from the deep connection that comes from making and composing for their own instrument. Their one of a kind two-octave Smallpipe creates a whole new world of sound, captivating audiences at every opportunity. Inspired by the likes of Martyn Bennett, Duncan Chisholm and Sharron Shannon their music is as lively as it is thought provoking and sensitive. Recently Malin has been recording music for The Outrun film, composing for contemporary dance and theatre and been learning the tradition of the extinct Finnish Bagpipes. “The future of Scottish folk is here” – The Wire Magazine Please note, wheelchair accessible spaces are not available to book online.
