One of the seminal figures of new wave, Adam Ant (born Stuart Leslie Goddard) had several distinct phases to his career. With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyor belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley. Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day. From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group. As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.

Jason Donovan came into our lives in the late 80s as Scott Robinson in the hit Australian series, Neighbours. Throughout 1988/89 he had several hits and his album Ten Good Reasons was the best-selling album of 1989. His hits included Too Many Broken Hearts, Especially For You (with Kylie Minogue), Any Dream Will Do, Sealed With A Kiss and many more. Since then he has rarely been away from stage or screen. Jason recently worked on his first theatre producing project, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and spent the summer back in London as Pharaoh in the sold out Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Suzi Quatro has always been a performing musician. Born in Michigan she was in successful bands, but got her real career break when super-producer Mickie Most saw her perform live. She flew to England in 1971 and went on to quickly create the monster hit Can The Can with songwriters Chinn and Chapman. Two and a half million copies of this song were snapped by an entranced public, catapulting her to the top, where she has stayed. A star was well and truly born. Having now sold over 55 million records – she featured in the UK charts for 101 weeks between 1973 and 1980! – Suzi has never lost the knack for great rock and roll. Suzi has also proved her versatility over the years: Stumblin’ In was a duet with Chris Norman that sold a million copies in the US but she has excelled in many other areas too. Acting, writing novels, broadcasting, her documentary film Suzi Q, presenting her autobiography Unzipped, live as a successful one-woman show! She has released albums with her peers, and with her son, No Control and The Devil In Me and in 2023 Face To Face with KT Tunstall.

Since the release of their last CD, 'Into Your Heart' Hothouse Flowers have been playing steadily around Ireland, America, Great Britain, Japan and Europe. Their shows last between two and three hours depending on the level of fever in the room. Most recently their sound has been enhanced and reinvigorated by the return of Peter O’Toole on bass, bouzouki and vocals. Drumming with the band these last ten years is Dave Clarke. Also playing with the band these days is Dorset man Martin Brunsden on double bass and backing vocals. His musicality adds yet another dimension to the ever evolving sound of the band. No two shows are the same. Improvisation can come at any point and allow the men express their brightest and their darkest influences. A song inherited by Fiachna describing the blow inflicted upon a community and a family due to drowning. This moment and moments like these set the Flowers apart from almost any other band of their time and trade. They are carriers of Culture and all of what that entails. Hothouse Flowers came out of tough times. They played the streets and brought the streets to the stages of the world. Individually Fiachna and Liam are enjoying a broadening of their horizons. Fiachna has been producing and presenting radio and television programmes and working as a composer of music for television. Liam has been collaborating with the Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre Company.
