Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel

Built before 1275 on a huge rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn, Dunstaffnage was the mighty stronghold of the MacDougalls. The castle, with its huge curtain wall, was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1309 and remained in royal possession for some years. Dunstaffnage became the temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746. • Near Dunbeg 3m N of Oban off the A85 • Open all year. How did they get here, what did they eat and what role did the sea play in their daily life? Watch fearless Viking warriors in thrilling clashes. Wander through the camp to find out how they lived, what they ate, how they made their weapons and clothes. Have a go at striking a Viking coin, making some flour and try on a helmet or two. Listen to a Viking scald tell a saga and find out why they did not wear horned helmets!
