The List

Playhouse Theatre

This West End theatre, located near Trafalgar Square, originally opened as the Royal Avenue Theatre in March 1882, showing mainly comic operas, burlesques and farces. It later started presenting drama, with George Bernard Shaw making his West End début here in 1894 with Arms and the Man. The theatre was taken over by the BBC in the 1950s and used to record live performances of The Goon Show and Hancock's Half Hour. It has had several owners since then, including Jeffrey Archer, and has undergone a major refurbishment by English Heritage. Now managed by Ambassador Theatre Group, the theatre has seen recent success with musicals such as Dancing in the Streets, La Cage aux Folles and Monty Python's Spamalot.
