The Harold Pinter Theatre

The Royal Comedy Theatre opened in 1881 but soon lost its regal forename, becoming the Comedy Theatre. For years it was at the cutting edge of the West End, presenting the UK premieres of Miller's A View From the Bridge and Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. It also ran a theatre club which, by presenting exclusive performances of plays that had been banned by the Lord Chamberlain's Office, helped to rob that office of credibility, and soon killed off the British government's censorship of theatre. In 2011, it paid tribute to the late Harold Pinter by taking his name, and despite the occasional flirtation with musicals, presents mostly straight drama. The nearest Tube stations are Charing Cross (Bakerloo/Northern), Piccadilly Circus (Bakerloo/Piccadilly) and Leicester Square (Piccadilly/Northern); Charing Cross station is also the main terminal for Southeastern. Bus stops near the theatre are served by routes 14, 19, 24, 29, 38 and 176. Visitors who are on the autistic spectrum, or who have learning difficulties, can download a visual story from the theatre website to help them enjoy their visit.

And there's no dark like a winter night in the country. And there was a wind like this one tonight, howling and whistling in off the sea.You hear it under the door and it's like someone singing.Singing in under the door at you. It was this type of night now.Am I setting the scene for you? The tallest tales reveal the deepest truths. CONOR MCPHERSON (_Girl from the North Country, The Brightening Air, The Hunger Games on Stage_) directs his spellbinding masterpiece _THE WEIR_ for the first time. BRENDAN GLEESON (_The Banshees of Inisherin, Harry Potter, Paddington 2_) stars as Jack in what promises to be a definitive production of the celebrated modern classic. The Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe-nominated, Emmy-winning Gleeson makes a long-awaited return to the stage in his native Dublin, as well as his much-anticipated West End stage debut. _THE WEIR_ is the play that brought McPherson (‘one of the finest writers of his generation’ - New York Times) to the world’s attention as a truly great writer, winning the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Olivier awards for Best New Play when it premiered at the Royal Court. On a stormy night, four local men gather in an isolated pub in rural Ireland. Their usual banter and everyday lives are disrupted by the arrival of a woman called Valerie. The stories they weave to impress her are gripping, haunting and deeply unsettling. Little do they know that she has a profoundly personal story of her own, the sharing of which will leave them all shaken. _THE WEIR_ is a testament to the need for human connection, the possibility ofhope, and the enduring power of storytelling.
