The List

Sadler's Wells Theatre

There's been entertainment on this site ever since Richard Sadler opened his Musick House in 1683, claiming that the well water found on the property had medicinal quality, but in its current incarnation as London's top dance theatre, Sadler's Wells dates from 1925, when producer Lilian Baylis and ambitious young dancer/choreographer Ninette de Valois started a ballet company in the theatre. The current building dates from 1998, and incorporates the skeleton of the previous one from 1931. Today, Sadler's Wells commissions and produces as well as hosts new dance works from British and international artists, as well as hosting Breakin' Convention, the international hip-hop theatre festival. The nearest Tube station is Angel (Northern) and the theatre is served by the 19, 38 and 341 buses. There is on-street free parking in Hardwick Street and other streets off Rosebery Avenue, and a 24-hour car park in Bowling Green Lane.

London City Ballet - Momentum

London City Ballet - Momentum

13 Sept 2025 - 14 Sept 2025

London City Ballet, the former resident company of Sadler’s Wells, returns after a staggering inaugural year that included a global tour through Asia, America and Europe. This season delivers a brand-new repertoire showcasing artists rarely seen in the UK. Joined once again by Guest Artist, the celebrated ballerina Alina Cojocaru, who will appear at all performances. In keeping with London City Ballet’s ethos of bringing to the stage rarely seen works, we present George Balanchine’s Haieff Divertimento – an early work by the master choreographer originally thought to be lost for 40 years after its premiere and to this day remaining unseen outside the USA. Alexei Ratmansky, New York City Ballet’s artist in residence, is a leading light on the global dance scene. ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, to Modest Mussorgsky’s eponymous score is set against a backdrop depicting Wassily Kandinsky’s best known masterpieces. Here the dancers truly bring the art to life. Unseen in the UK since its 2009 premiere, Consolations & Liebestraum by Liam Scarlett is a response to Franz Liszt’s piano score of the same name. Played live, Scarlett’s affecting ballet depicts the lifecycle of a relationship, its blossoming and later fracturing love. Emerging choreographer, Florent Melac, best known as a Premier Danseur at the Paris Opera Ballet, creates a new work for the company in unique, fluid, musical style which combines inventive transitions with intimate partnering. This season London City Ballet undergo a developmental project of artist development with rising choreographic voice, Tasha Chu. Her work will be showcased at selected venues throughout our future seasons as we build momentum and continue forging a path in bringing dance to venues across the country.

English National Ballet - R:Evolution
George Balanchine revolutionised ballet, combining speed, precision and a new dynamism to create the neo-classical style. In 1947 in New York, he premiered Theme & Variations, set to music by Tchaikovsky. Since then, this showstopper for 13 couples has lost none of its wow factor. Think gorgeous tutus, fiendish steps and a dazzling finale. That same year, in the same city, Martha Graham created Errand into the Maze. The visceral, rarely performed duet, based on the raw drama of Greek mythology, encapsulates her unique point of view. Graham changed dance forever, becoming one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Drawing inspiration from both these visionaries, William Forsythe has been pushing ballet to its limits for decades – and continues to do so. His choreography always surprises, as in his signature piece, Herman Schmerman (Quintet). Originally choreographed in 1992 for New York City Ballet (the Company founded by Balanchine himself), the work allows the dancers to let rip, to delirious effect. Fast forward to today, David Dawson continues to evolve the language of ballet creating works that are extremely physical and emotional. Four Last Songs, from 2023, epitomises this. Underneath a glimpse of the heavens above, 12 dancers unite in Dawson’s poetic style to Strauss’s poignant song cycle, ushering in a feeling of serenity and the sublime. The music for three of the works – by Tchaikovsky, Menotti and R. Strauss – will be performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, with Madeleine Pierard singing Strauss’s masterwork.
