The List

Union Chapel

A working church, a drop-in homeless centre and a beloved music venue -- Union Chapel sort of does it all, doesn't it. The Grade I listed building first opened its doors as a venue in 1991 as part of a programme to restore the building and to increase access to the performing arts. Previously it had acted solely as a Congregational Church, built and opened at the tail end of the 18th century (a capacity in which it still acts today). Recent concerts include Aimee Mann, Eddi Reader, Keb' Mo', Micah P Hinson and Mavis Staples. In 2012, Union Chapel was voted London's Best Live Music Venue by Time Out magazine readers. The building also houses the Union Chapel Bar, Margins Kitchen (staffed by recently homeless people, with all profits to charity) and a kiosk. The closest tube stations are Highbury & Islington and Angel, and bus routes 4, 19, 30, 43, 271, 277, 279, 393 stop nearby.

The Bros Landreth

The Bros Landreth

11 Apr 2026 - 25 Apr 2026

Before they were The Bros. Landreth, Joey and Dave were only looking for a good excuse to spend a little more time together. They had spent their respective early years backing up other artists and touring the world as hired musicians until one particularly long and challenging tour prompted Joey to call his older brother with a simple proposal. When I get home, let's sit down and make some noise together would be the call that would be the turning point seeing them focus on their own roots rock sound that went on to be celebrated on their acclaimed debut album, Let It Lie. Originally released in their hometown of Winnipeg in 2013, Let It Lie was re-released in 2015 after signing a record deal with Nashville-based Slate Creek Records. The album received widespread acclaim, won multiple awards including a JUNO, and propelled the band to play over 400 tour dates around the world. A Rolling Stone review praised the band's quiet storm of slide guitar solos, blue notes, three part harmonies. Lifelong musical hero, Bonnie Raitt, was equally impressed after catching the band's set, saying "I haven't liked a band as much as The Bros. Landreth in a long time. To hear this kind of funky, southern style rock played with such originality and soul will knock you out." Then, the band went on a hiatus. A break afforded Joey Landreth the opportunity release and extensively tour his debut solo album Whiskey in 2017, furthering his reputation for being a first-rate guitar slinger, songwriter, and performer in his own right. Joey's booming solo career might have delayed the timeline for the brothers, yet they never stopped writing songs that would eventually be recorded for their long awaited, follow-up release. The time off that we took between touring Let It Lie and coming back together to make this next album was really difficult. Dave says. It was tough, but we needed to do it. Being away from each other gave us some really valuable perspective. It let us realize just how important and deeply satisfying it is for us to make music together and that's something that we wont soon forget. Teaming up in studio with drummer Ryan Voth, guitarist Ariel Posen, and longtime producer Murray Pulver, the soon to be released album is an exciting evolution of the band's sound, honed by thousands of hours on stage and filtered through the lens of the last many years on the road. Weve got hundreds and hundreds of shows and thousands and thousands of miles under our belts. This next record has a confidence that we didnt have - couldnt have with the first. The Bros. Landreth's journey took some unexpected turns, but ultimately reaffirmed two brother's earnest desire to make honest music together. Slated for release fall of 2019, the follow up album is called 87, a nod to the real beginning of the band; the year they became brothers.

Onstage, Mary is in a league of her own, her glorious husky voice pulling every nuance of emotion from the music. Resonant with the grief of Billie Holiday, the soul of Van Morrison and the defiance of Edith Piaf, to hear Mary sing is to be at the core of the human heart.

Katherine Priddy

Katherine Priddy

16 Apr 2026 - 9 May 2026

Over the past three years, Priddy has quietly been building a growing following, captivating audiences around the UK with her haunting vocals, rich harmonies, distinctive finger picking guitar style and enchanting songs whose lyrics celebrate her life-long love affair with literature and poetry. She has been championed by BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music and her debut EP 'Wolf' was chosen by Richard Thompson as his Best Thing I've Heard All Year in MOJO Magazine in 2018. With the buzz around her building, Priddy is making her mark in 2021 with the release of an eagerly-anticipated debut album on Navigator Records, The Eternal Rocks Beneath, which is set to bring her to even wider notice. The 10 self-penned tracks are delivered with a maturity and depth that belie the fact that this is her first full length release. At times tender, at times carrying a darker edge, the stories she weaves are transporting. Not surprising then that Nick Drake, John Martyn, Tunng and Scott Matthews are amongst her many influences. It has already received an amazing response from radio and press, including a 4 star review from The Observer, which described it as 'an accomplished set of original songs delivered in a breathtaking voice'. Meanwhile, Folk Radio declared it 'A debut of true substance, it's like searching for a simple shelter and stumbling upon a diamond mine'. The album was recorded over a 2-year period at Rebellious Jukebox studios, a little basement studio hidden beneath inner-city Birmingham and presided over by masterful producer Simon Weaver. The ensemble cast of musicians, including a sweeping string section, occasionally cut through by raw electric guitar and drums, as well as Richard March (Pop Will Eat Itself) on double bass and Mikey Kenny on fiddle, enhance Priddy's command of melody and lyricism and provide the perfect backdrop for the feelings of nostalgia and timelessness that underpin the record. Having already racked up some serious air play from the likes of Tom Robinson, Guy Garvey, Cerys Matthews, Radcliffe & Maconie, Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq and Janice Long, as well as supported the likes of Richard Thompson & The Chieftains and playing well-earned spots at festivals and sell-out headline shows around the country, Priddy is a fast-rising star on the scene. The Eternal Rocks Beneath is poised to cement the place of this determined young woman in the folk world and beyond.

An unparalleled, deeply individualistic songwriter and stylist, Hitchcock has traversed myriad genres with humor, intelligence, and originality over more than thirty albums and seemingly infinite live performances. From The Soft Boys’ proto-psych-punk and The Egyptians’ Dadaist pop to solo masterpieces like 1984’s milestone I Often Dream of Trains and 1990’s Eye, Hitchcock has crafted a strikingly original oeuvre rife with sagacious observation, astringent wit, recurring marine life, mechanized rail services, cheese, Clint Eastwood, and innumerable finely drawn characters real and imagined. Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’. His most recent album The Man Upstairs is a bittersweet love letter to a vanishing world. Produced by legendary folk-rock svengali Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake) the album was critically acclaimed by MOJO, Uncut and The Quietus. This TalkingGigs event gives you a chance not only to hear Robyn perform and tell tales in his unique style but also to hear him talk about his music and career and even ask him the question that has always intrigued you.

As Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) once said ““New York City is the center of the universe, and there is no New York City without Jesse Malin”. Starting out his music career when he was just twelve years old, fronting seminal New York hardcore punk band Heart Attack, Malin went on to front beloved ‘90s glam punks D Generation, before launching his solo career in the early noughties. From there, Malin – described by Uncut magazine as a “fearless storyteller” – has recorded nine solo albums and become renowned for his passionate and unifying live shows. Along the way, he has built a dedicated community of fans, including many high-profile admirers, which has led to collaborations – both live and in the studio – with Bruce Springsteen, Billie Joe Armstrong, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams to name just a few. In 2021, Malin released his first ever double album, ‘Sad and Beautiful World’, a record forged in the wild flames of the lost pandemic year, which he described as “for those who pick up the pieces and find beauty in the madness”. 2022 was another busy year, with a triumphant appearance at Glastonbury a highlight amid numerous sold-out headlining shows, and a run of dates with Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem). This year, there have been shows celebrating the 20th anniversary of his first solo album, the acclaimed and still adored ‘The Fine Art of Self-Destruction’, and Malin now returns to the UK, including a first visit to Oxted!

The Blow Monkeys

The Blow Monkeys

10 Sept 2026 - 17 Oct 2026

With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyor belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley. Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day. From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group. As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.
Kiefer Sutherland

Kiefer Sutherland

12 May 2026 - 27 May 2026

Kiefer Sutherland has been a professional actor for over thirty years, starring in movies like 'Stand By Me', 'The Lost Boys', 'Young Guns', Flatliners', 'A Few Good Men', 'A Time to Kill', 'Dark City', 'Melancholia' and most recently, a western called 'Forsaken,' as well as the TV series '24.' But unknown to many during the course of his career, he has taken on other vocations with the same kind of dedication and commitment. The first one, beginning around 1992, was that of a cattle rancher and competitive cowboy (roper) in the USTRC team roping circuit. He ran a successful ranch with partner John English for almost a decade. During that timeframe, Sutherland won numerous roping events around the country including Phoenix, Indio and the Los Angeles Open. In 2002, Sutherland, with his music partner and best friend Jude Cole, began a small record label called Ironworks. The goal of this label was to record local musicians and distribute their music at a time when the music industry was going through a monumental shift. Some of their artists included Rocco DeLuca and the Burden, HoneyHoney and Billy Boy On Poison. In 2009, Sutherland left the label to recharge and figure out what he was going to do next. In early 2015 Sutherland played Cole two songs he had written and wanted to record as demos for other artists to record. Cole responded positively to the songs and the album grew organically from those recordings. Two songs became four and four grew into six, until Cole suggested that they make a record. Their collaboration resulted in Kiefer Sutherland's upcoming debut album: 'Down In A Hole'.

James Mcmurtry

James Mcmurtry

29 Sept 2026 - 13 Oct 2026

James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation - Stephen King James McMurtry is an American rock / Americana songwriter, guitarist, bandleader, and occasional actor (Daisy Miller, Lonesome Dove). His father, novelist Larry McMurtry, gave him his first guitar at age seven. His mother, an English professor, taught him how to play it: "My mother taught me three chords and the rest I just stole as I went along. I learned everything by ear or by watching people." James McMurtry latest release is The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy cords. The 10-song collection was co-produced by McMurtry & Don Dixon (R.E.M., The Smithereens) and is his first album in four years. It follows his 2021 acclaimed New West debut, The Horses and the Hounds, which Uncut Magazine said lifts storytelling-in-song to meticulous new levels As varied as they are, McMurtry's new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family's past: a rough pencil sketch by Ken Kesey that serves as the album cover, the hallucinations experienced by his father, the legendary writer Larry McMurtry, an old poem by a family friend. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller, McMurtry teases vivid worlds out of small details, setting them to arrangements that have the elements of Americana but sound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same breath, The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a resurgence as young songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell (who is namechecked on the new album) cite him as a formative influence. Known for his powerhouse performances, McMurtry tours year-round. You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character, maybe you can get a story. If you can set it to a verse-chorus structure, maybe you can get a song. A song can come from anywhere, but the main inspiration is fear. Specifically fear of irrelevance. If you dont have songs, you dont have a record. If you dont have a record, you dont have a tour. You gotta keep putting out work.

The Slow Show

The Slow Show

10 Nov 2026 - 11 Nov 2026

There's never been a band from Manchester quite like The Slow Show, whose minimal but epic songs swell from gentle piano-led Americana to roaring choruses and string sections. These deeply personal songs about love and death have reduced audiences to hushed silence, even tears. Despite being under the radar in their hometown they have found champions at BBC 6 Music and Radio 2 and have played in Europe to large, sold out audiences. The band's use of choirs and a colliery brass band gives them a distinctly northern sound, but singer Rob Goodwin's deep, painstaking baritone sounds more like a distant relation of Johnny Cash than anything from the English North West.

Hayseed Dixie

Hayseed Dixie

6 Jun 2026 - 31 Oct 2026

Hayseed Dixie began in the summer of 2000 in the fertile valley of Deer Lick Holler, deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee USA. In this area which was completely isolated from outside cultural and musical influence, the boys grew up playing the traditional music of their forefathers on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar and acoustic bass. All of this changed abruptly one afternoon when a stranger crashed his car into a stately old oak tree on a particularly dangerous curve, which the locals refer to as the Devil's Elbow. Sadly, the stranger expired, but his legacy lives on! As the boys searched through the wreckage looking for identification, they discovered several vinyl AC/DC albums. After playing these back on an old Edison 78rpm Victrola, everyone agreed that the songs were right fine country music . . . and that the Lost Highway of Brother Hank Williams and this Highway To Hell of AC/DC were indeed the exact same damn road! And the rest is now enshrined in musical history. Most recently, Hayseed Dixie are exploring the inspired catalogue of the stadium rock of the 1970's and 1980's. This interest began during a 2014 Spring tour of Germany, in which the band heard the song Eye of the Tiger 6 different times on 6 different German radio stations in a single day while driving between Dortmund and Frankfurt. As the seed is planted, so the tree shall grow - this very quote appears on the inner sleeve of the 1980 album Escape by Journey. How very true indeed.
