St John's Smith Square
St John's Smith Square was designed by Thomas Archer and completed in 1728. One of the masterpieces of English Baroque architecture, the building inspires great affection partly for its sturdy elegance and partly for its sheer persistence, having survived fires, lightning strikes, subsidence and a direct hit from an incendiary during WWII. It was thoroughly restored in the 1960s and is now one of the most respected concert halls in London, with a versatile acoustic and a wide-ranging programme.
The nearest Tube stations are Westminster and St James' Park, with Victoria and Waterloo offering rail access. The 3 and 87 buses stop on adjacent Millbank to the east; the C10 and 507 on Horseferry Road to the south, and the 88 on Marsham Street to the west. Since 2010, the venue has been wheelchair accessible by means of a platform lift.
