Attention All Shipping - A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast
As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, Charlie Connellys hilarious and informative show brings the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he firmly believes to be the greatest invention of the modern age. How did a weather forecast for mariners capture the hearts of a nation, from salty old sea dog to insomniac landlubber? How is it possible for rain later to be good? And where the hell is North Utsire? Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what all those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares rip-roaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement. Inspired by Charlies bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter of a million copies, this pacy, moving and hilarious show is selling out theatres up and down the land as it takes you all the way from Viking to South-East Iceland. Attention All Shipping guarantees the shipping forecast will never sound the same again. Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio withHe has a natural wit that doesnt get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it. Fi Glover, broadcaster Charlie is always warm, funny and engagingI actually sent him a fan letter - and I've never done that to anyone in my life before. Bernard Sumner, New Order I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly whose knowledge of what I call the ships is excellent. Ode to Joyce

1 Nov 2026 - 1 Nov 2026

Apollo Theatre Company presents Ode to Joyce, the songs and monologues of Joyce Grenfell. Compiled and performed by Cheryl Knight. Co-devised and directed by Paul Knight. Joyce Grenfell was one of the greatest female entertainers of the twentieth century, loved the world over for her hilarious and beautifully observed monologues and songs, as well as numerous film, television and radio appearances. Her legacy continued through the work of Victoria Wood, who cited her as being a great influence, as well as an array of female comedians including Miranda Hart. First conceived in honour of her centenary year and playing to sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Festival, this revue has been delighting audiences ever since. In this gem of nostalgia, which recreates the setting of one of Joyces stage shows, Cheryl Knight absolutely captures her spirit (Everything Theatre). Woven between the well-known songs and monologues are some of her more delicate and poignant pieces, as well as some rare and exclusive material. Truly a labour of love, this show brings back to life an extraordinary entertainer. This performance will end at approximately 4pm.
Across the Square

Across the Square

27 Sept 2026 - 27 Sept 2026

22nd December, 1917. There is a knock at the door of Millicent Fawcetts home on Gower Street, Bloomsbury. Lady Ottoline Morrell has crossed from her home at 44 Bedford Square to express her condolences for the loss of a beloved sister. Millicent Fawcett, leader of the suffragists, is about to open the door to the patroness of the Bloomsbury Group. Ottolines vast circle of friends includes Prime Ministers and novelists, painters and philosophers. Her world is tainted by the whiff of scandal and the whisper of notoriety. Millicent on the other hand has been unwavering in her dedication to the crusade for womens suffrage. Across The Square imagines what might have occurred in an encounter between these two sharply contrasting women from very different worlds. Each in their own way, Lady Ottoline Morrell and Millicent Fawcett have left an indelible legacy on our political and cultural landscape yet they have languished too long in the twilight of obscurity, overshadowed by others. In a show full of both laughter and drama, Across the Square seeks to shine a light on these immensely influential women. Written by international award-winning writer, Non Vaughan-OHagan and directed by Alex Pearson, Across the Square had its premiere at the Bloomsbury Festival and a sellout revival at Londons Jermyn Street Theatre. Will these two extraordinary women find common ground? Two differing world views are about to collide over a glass of sherry. www.acrossthesquare.co.uk [//www.acrossthesquare.co.uk] @AcrosstheSquare This event will finish at approximately 4.10pm.

Washed Up in Walberswick

Washed Up in Walberswick

18 Sept 2026 - 19 Sept 2026

WASHED UP IN WALBERSWICK arrives at the Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall this autumn. ANYTHING CAN WASH UP ON THE NORTH SEA COAST So far and for no good reason this company has created a tranche of tasteless comedies, featuring sexual shenanigans and frivolous filth, including Death in Southwold, No Sex in Southwold, Sex & Death in Southwold , and last years infamous Salacious Secrets in Southwold . Very seaside, and actually remarkable and well-disguisedly intelligent fun its a hoot. Libby Purves (TheatreCat Review Sept 2025) Now theyre back again, but they have gone far, far afield, to pastures entirely new, with Washed up in Walberswick. Will there be concrete mixers? Will there be small boats? Potholes? The cost of living? The plight of the people of? Ah, who knows. Only one thing is certain: this play is written especially for our long-suffering out-flung patch of the Eastern Region, dedicated to the lucky people who live here, (and any left-over summer visitors), and if in this new drama they get what they deserve, then lucky old them. This production is supported by FESPA

Common Ground presents The Phantom of Friar Street
Number 17 Friar Street was a modest two storey house of Georgian construction in a lonely corner of a forgotten market town in Norfolk. The house became unexpectedly available at short notice and seemed the perfect location for me to complete a volume of short stories, woefully overdue, to be ready for publication by Christmas. Surely nothing here would distract, disturb or alarm, not a sound would break the evening silence, no footsteps would echo in the cobbled streets, and nothing save the weather would disrupt ones sleep in the small hours. I became aware that there was a mystery attached to No 17 that the townsfolk werent keen to talk about. It was only Mabel who was obsessed with finding the truth. I met Mabel when I arrived to take possession of the house in late September. She was standing in the street staring at an upstairs window deep in thought and quite oblivious to my presence. Do you know the house? I asked. Without altering her gaze she replied, I know something of its history. You mustnt even think of lodging here. Smiling condescendingly at her, I said, Dry rot? Rats? Or a ghost perhaps? as I turned the key in the lock... Scares, shocks, and a spine-chilling twist in the tale await those brave enough to come with us to Friar Street. But there will also be humour, haunting live music & a heart-warming affirmation of undying love and loyalty. " I can think of no other company that swings back and forth, from tragedy to comedy, with such unapologetic aplombbold & brilliantly strange . David Vass (Diss Express) reviewing our 2025 production, The Tales Our Mother Told. " A proper ghost story with a suitably claustrophobic lighthouse setting, there are some genuine moments that make you jump, performed by three excellent actors.Pat Whymarks excellent script gives the actors much to play with. Characterisation is strong, with highly evocative music and projections ." Paul T Davies (Keep Colchester Cool), reviewing our 2024 production, Ghost Of The Toll Point Light. Running time is 2 hours including 20 min interval. Age recommendation 15+
