Short Waves Presents... airu We welcome again Bilbao-based band airu after their packed-out show at Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in Shoreditch back in January. They now present their new EP, “YO NO SÉ NADA! NADA!!!”, five new songs that lean towards a more electronic sound and a darker aesthetic, while still maintaining the essence of their luminous lyrics and danceable rhythms. A generational cry of pop melancholy. Sentimentalism, catchy melodies and a really deep voice are the three pillars of the Bilbao based band airu. Founded in 2018, airu has managed to position itself in alternative music at the national level, being recognized by media such as Mondosonoro, Neo 2 and Movistar+. One of its members was selected as a Keychange artist in 2022 and the band took part in recognized festivals such as Waves Vienna in Austria. After all that, the Basque quartet joined the Oso Polita label, with which they released their first LP, "Con lo bueno y con pena”. After this release, which marked the beginning of their consolidation as one of the leading bands in the Basque alternative scene, they embarked on an extensive and intense tour that took them to major festivals, both in Spain (Bilbao BBK Live, VIDA Festival, Sound Isidro) and internationally (the U.S. festivals New Colossus, New New Festival, SXSW, as well as MIL in Lisbon). Support acts to be announced soon. Presented by Short Waves This is an 18+ event

21 Sept 2025 - 21 Sept 2025

The Argentinian alt-pop duo AINDA, consisting of Esmeralda Escalante and Yago Escrivá, returns to Europe to present their sixth studio album, "Fuimos los dos". This work marks a return to the duo’s essence, emphasizing the intimate dialogue between their two voices, with a production inspired by the 1970s and orchestral arrangements that give it a cinematic atmosphere. Produced by Nico Cotton and Nico Btesh, and featuring over 25 musicians, "Fuimos los dos" strengthens Ainda’s artistic identity and solidifies their place in today’s Ibero-American music scene. The album’s title comes from a line in the song “Éramos lo más”, written in collaboration with Spanish artist Leiva. Since their formation in 2012, Ainda has built a solid career, with a discography that includes the albums UNO (2013), SEGUNDO (2015), ANIMAL (2018), MILLONES (2020), TE QUIERO (2023), and the latest FUIMOS LOS DOS (2025). Their style has evolved from folk to a more complex alternative pop, always maintaining honesty and emotional connection in their compositions. Ainda’s relationship with Europe has grown stronger in recent years, particularly through their collaboration with Leiva. In 2022 and 2023, the duo was invited to open concerts on the Madrid-based musician’s “Cuando te muerdes el labio” tour, both in Europe and Latin America. 14 Iced Bears + Guests

2 Oct 2025 - 2 Oct 2025

The 14 Iced Bears were formed in 1985 in Brighton, UK. Their first single Inside/Blue Suit/Cut attracted the attention of legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel - two Peel Sessions followed in 1986 and 1987. The band were part of the C86 wave - a movement often credited with the birth of Indiepop and the launch of a whole genre Of music - that would go on to inspire many future bands. The Bears rapidly became a fanzine favourite. In 1988 their EP ‘Come Get Me’ was released on the legendary Sarah Records label. Also in 1988 after a number of other well-received singles, came their eponymous first LP, which took a more psychedelic Turn. The Bears started touring more frequently, supporting acts such as Julian Cope, Alex Chilton and the Velvet Underground. In 1991 they released their second album ‘Wonder’ on Thunderball Records, establishing them as an influence to many up And-coming musicians. In 1992 the 14 Iced bears decided to go their separate ways. In 2010, due to renewed interest in the genre, the Bears reformed to tour the east and west coasts of the USA. Cherry Red Records then released a compilation album of all the band’s material entitled ‘Hold on Inside’. This was also brought out on two vinyl gatefold LPs by Optic Nerve. After another hiatus and following a six-page feature on the band in Shindig! magazine in Jan 2024, an honour only usually bestowed to psyche legends such as Arthur Lee and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, the band reformed once again. Enthusiastically received shows followed in Sheffield Paris, London, Glasgow and Leeds, mainly headlining, some supporting, playing with The Vaselines, Heavenly and Miki Berenyi (ex LUSH) We couldn't be happier to welcome them at the Victoria for theiry autum 2025 tour Presented by Short Waves This is an 18+ event
Novelty Island

Novelty Island

4 Dec 2025 - 13 Dec 2025

Novelty Island \[aka Tom McConnell\] releases third album Jigsaw Causeway on October 3rd, 2025 via Liverpool indies 9x9 Records & Ripe Records. In support, the Jigsaw Causeway tour will be trailing across the country throughout the autumn, calling at Novelty Island strongholds of Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and London. Inspired by the fuzzed-out, woozy production of Grandaddy, Beck and Boards of Canada, Jigsaw Causeway is a darker collection of surreal, melancholic lo-fi pop songs than previous Novelty Island releases. The album was composed by utilising fragments of music in a variety of combinations, pieced together by McConnell to create his latest body of work. This mighty puzzle began on tape in Aberhosan, then harmonium tracked in Oxford, a brass band captured in Kippax and the record's final stages tracked in Liverpool. The new album artwork also features a papier-mâché sculpture of a train featuring 50,000 jigsaw pieces created by McConnell. His unique papier-mâché animated props bring a unique aesthetic to the striking Novelty Island live show. Novelty Island’s hook-filled dream pop channels surrealism and Northern melancholy through classic songwriting. The project is led by Liverpool-based songwriter and producer, Tom McConnell, who describes the sound as “Paul McCartney having an argument with Bernard Black”. Eclectic songs inspired by childhood, motorways, trains, old televisions, cowboys, space, birds and balloons form their first two albums How Are You Coping With This Century? and Wallsend Weekend Television. Both albums have received great support from Shindig!, MOJO, BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing and Absolute Radio amongst others. The Novelty Island live band have performed at Glastonbury Festival and toured the UK extensively as a headline act and support to Sea Power, The Pale White, Scott Lavene, High Llamas and China Crisis. Parviz + Wiffeney

Parviz + Wiffeney

11 Sept 2025 - 11 Sept 2025

Parviz's self-titled debut album is slated for July 2025, evoking the spirit of Iran's pre-revolutionary '70s music scene. The lead single "Azadeh" - a female given name symbolizing independence - nods to the recent "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, with artwork by Rana Fadavi emphasizing its urgency. Piercing guitars and flowing detuned synthesizers create a dreamy, psychedelic atmosphere throughout the opus; DIY aesthetics and indie influences infuse each track with emotion and nostalgia, resulting in a debut that's both rooted in Persian culture and distinctly modern. "Azadeh" music video directed by Steph Hope (Stones Throw), album mastering by Katie Tavini (Arlo Parks, Los Bitchos). Steph Hope, or “Wiffeney” as she is better known; is a multi-disciplinary artist whose body of work is best described as the most beautiful, psychedelic vomit you've ever seen. She draws grotesque melting humans, writes soulful oddball music, and was in the art department on the original chaotic web series 'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared' (if you know, you know). Bag Of Cans + Guests

Bag Of Cans + Guests

19 Sept 2025 - 19 Sept 2025

With the launch of their debut album ’We Are A Band’ in June 2023, Bag of Cans managed to fool both listeners and their mums around the country. Not only were they very much “a band” but one that could release songs too. In late 2024 an EP called ‘Favourite Shirt’ with such songs as ‘Favourite Shirt’ was released following a couple of years of tours and festival appearances. Capitalising on this momentum, they then pretty much immediately decided to take a break from gigging, in what is sure to be described “as a 4D Chess move of utter brilliance” and will be studied by industry moguls for years to come as “one of the promotional plays of all time”. Released on Fierce Panda, these collections of songs have attracted praise and airtime from BBC Radio 6 and the single ‘Hostage at the Dinner Table’ was a joint winner on Steve Lamacq’s Roundtable. The EP’s titular tune ‘Favourite Shirt’ got a load of inexplicable plays on KEXP in the states, which confused everyone even further and no one really knew what to do with that information. As the Cans now return from their slumber, they look to the autumn to throw themselves back into a great big puddle of gigs, and splash around for someone’s amusement in their tried and tested wellies of slightly-deranged-indie-music. Big Sky Orchestra, Denver Cuss, Esme White
Big Sky Orchestra - An intimate, three-piece acoustic show from five-piece British band, whose music draws from soft rock, funk and Americana. Their focus is their captivating live experience that encapsulates the freedom of the 1960/70s West Coast jam band scene whilst retaining a distinctly British feel. Soaring vocal harmonies and rock and roll guitars are backed up with a jazz rhythm section, building an intricate and spontaneous, yet always driving, brand of funk Americana. Denver Cuss - has been playing jazz for the last ten years. Having studied jazz performance at the London College of Music, she later went into a more soulful environment, working on cultivating her mid-century production style. Now she plays a mixture of the two, with her soulful debut album, Leaving Me, and jazz gigs around London keeping her busy. Esme White - songstress with a love for storytelling and world building. Drawing on influences from country, folk, punk and poetry, she began writing a collection of songs mid lockdown as a way remain engaged and imaginative with the pulse of existence. Quinton Barnes & Black Noise Ensemble

Quinton Barnes & Black Noise Ensemble

12 Nov 2025 - 12 Nov 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Quinton Barnes & Black Noise Ensemble Quinton Barnes is a relentlessly ambitious Montreal-based artist exploring the edges of Canada's music scene. Since 2018, he's built a unique sound, writing, rapping, singing, producing, mixing, and mastering his own work across a prolific discography. For his new album, Black Noise, produced by Michael Cloud Duguay (Scions), releasing June 6 on Watch That Ends The Night Records, Barnes took an assuredly different approach than with his past work, resulting in a release that, while in staunch keeping with his radically innovate methods of expression, presents a bold sonic evolution and showcases the talents and efforts of a diverse collective of Montreal-based artists and musicians in collaboration. In late 2022, on the heels of the release of his For the Love of Drugs album, Quinton Barnes casually tweeted ‘I want to work with noise/improv musicians in some capacity ... not sure how yet but the idea is there’. The tweet was spotted by an acquaintance of Barnes, Ontario-based composer/producer Michael Cloud Duguay, who immediately saw vast creative potential in the idea. Widely acclaimed for his panoramic and idiosyncratic approach to developing highly stylized albums with live ensembles, Duguay reached out to Barnes and offered to collaborate on this project, applying his existing methods of curation, collaboration, and creative distillation to the artist’s vision, and the two began developing the concept for Black Noise. Inspired by Afropessimist thought and the work of French Economist Jacques Attali, Barnes became interested in noise and the function that it can serve, particularly within the context of Black music, and hoped to situate noise within a context of black cultural expression, fusing soul and gospel-inspired vocals with noise, rapping with noise, and pushing the limits of black genres to an aesthetic and sonic brink. Taking notes, Duguay curated an ensemble out of experienced noise performers and free improvisers living and working in Montreal including members of anti-colonial free jazz quarter Egyptian Cotton Arkestra (James Goddard, Markus Lake, Ari Swan, and Lucas Huang), exploratory multi-instrumentalist Matt LeGroulx, experimental reedist and instrument maker Naomi McCarroll-Butler, and audio engineer Ky Brooks. Sessions were booked at the legendary Hotel2Tango studio, a nexus of creative expression in Montreal that has housed sessions for notable releases by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Arcade Fire, Big Brave, and more. The creative process began with Barnes and Duguay commissioning and recording a suite of original classical piano music composed by Montreal based pianist Edward Enman. This material was then sampled, manipulated, and deconstructed to build foundations for lyric-writing and improvised ensemble performance in-studio. This process intentionally contrasted the institutions and imperialist practices of western music with the traditions of Black musical expression by taking a standard western tradition and exploiting its resources for destruction and reclamation. With funding from The Canada Council for the Arts, the ensemble assembled in Montreal in November, 2024, just days after the re-election of Donald Trump in America. With the spectre of explicit fascism casting a tense shadow over the sessions, the collective came together every day for a week, using the manipulated piano suite recordings as a guide to improvisation and spontaneous composition. Collaboratively exploring different iterations of ‘noise’ through the lens of Barnes’ Black Noise theories and Duguay’s tightly conceptualized creative process, Black Noise coalesced piece by piece. The album’s material ranges from deconstructed acid funk (Black Noise) to an avant-garde post-rock cum footwork tribute to the late new music composer Julius Eastman (What Would Eastman Do?), harsh noise (Art of Survival), frenetic breakbeat (Sober for the Weekend), orchestral drone (Quiet Noise), to Barnes’ most heartbreakingly beautiful ballad work yet on the album closer, Movement 7. Foregrounded throughout is Barnes’ patently potent lyricism and dynamic vocal performance, exploring themes including black nihilism, overlooked black genius, precarity and poverty, grief, and triumph. With a world-class ensemble of instrumentalists supporting him, and Duguay’s refined penchant for sonic worldbuilding, Quinton Barnes has accomplished something unprecedented in both conceptual scope and delivery. Black Noise stands alone not only in its enigmatic approach to genre fusion and collaboration but as a recorded document that undeniably situates noise, creatively and intellectually, within a context of Black cultural expression outside of the trappings of so-called ‘conscious hip-hop’. Black Noise represents something undeniably new not only in Barnes’ rapidly developing oeuvre, but in the canons of hip-hop and experimental music. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. This is an 18+ event
