English Heritage: Dartmouth Castle

Having guarded the entrance to the Dart Estuary and the port of Dartmouth for over 600 years, Dartmouth Castle is a complex 14th century defence system. A century after work started on the castle, a gun tower was added to hold a heavy cannon that could sink ships. Today, the castle provides excellent views over the estuary, particularly from the tall gun tower. Climb to the top of the battlement for the views or visit the tearoom and enjoy cream teas, sandwiches, some hot meals and hot or cold beverages. There are also benches located outside and a small lawn area available for picnicking. The castle is one mile south-east of Dartmouth off B3205. There is a pay and display car park 12 miles from the entrance and parking on the access road is free. For a fun day out, a river boat from the town quay will take you up to the castle and there are also some coastal and woodland walks in the area for wildlife spotting. Dartmouth Castle is free for members, £6.10 for adults and £3.70 for children.

Richard III

Richard III

29 Jul 2025 - 2 Aug 2025

There is a lull in the Wars of the Roses, and a fragile peace under Edward IV. But it wont last long. Not with Shakespeares favourite villain itching to become king. Richards twisted ambition and murderous plotting soon plunge England back into war, as its royal family tears itself apart with grief, revenge, anger and intrigue. From the widowed Lady Anne to the princes in the tower, Richard manipulates and deceives everyone for his own ends. This is a play packed with family feuding, black comedy and high drama, and Shakespeares Richard III is an irresistibly ruthless monster. Dartmouth Castle couldnt be a better location to stage this blood-soaked story of greed and the battle for power. Its easy to imagine yourself in 15th century England as you watch the battle for the throne play out in front of you. Come along and welcome destruction, blood and massacre!
