Blackheart Orchestra

Blackheart Orchestra

9 Oct 2025 - 26 Mar 2026

Award-winning British songwriters, composers and multi-instrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington are The Blackheart Orchestra. One of the must-see bands pioneering folktronica duo blend musical styles seamlessly sidestepping boundaries to create music huge enough to fill a cathedral. Always producing something beyond all easily marketed genres, their multi-instrumental sonic landscapes have always been too unpredictable and adventurous for the mainstream. Fusing acoustic fragility and pulsing electronica, The Blackheart Orchestra bring together stringed instrument dexterity with 80's synthesisers and clear classical influences. Often mistaken for an eight-piece band on first listen, they are found on stage continuously changing from electric and acoustic guitars, bowed guitar, piano, organ, bass and electronic percussion to vintage synthesisers, omnichord and melodica in a complex choreographed weave of musical moods and textures. One moment their sound is minimal and molecular, the next a mountain-like wall of sound with vast symphonic climaxes. Their four critically acclaimed albums and mesmerising live shows have won them obsessive worldwide fans, plaudits from musical giants and placements on TV commercials and films. Chrissy Mostyn's haunting vocals, the Mike Oldfield-like multi-instrumental playing of Rick Pilkington plus their fearless combination of conventional and unconventional all reflect their self-created universe where art meets sound and words paint pictures that take you with them on their deep musical journey into the human psyche.

Freckfest presents Ed Tudor-Pole - Songs and Stories from a Punk Rock Icon
If you think that punk music should be like a McDonalds burger, ie. - utterly predictable and the same every time then your view differs from Tenpole's! "The spirit of punk has always been there - it's something to do with rebellion, e.g. Jerry Lee Lewis or Keith Richards, just happens that in 1976 they named this spirit 'Punk'.! " say's Ed. Tenpole was glad to find out what he was at last, for he'd been playing guitar and trying to write great songs in that spirit since he was a boy, long before 1976 came along. "Punk is an attitude not a form of music, ask Steve Jones!!? Says Tenpole. " I date back to the birth of punk rock when it was all about being original, create your own look, and before the time when it became a competition to see which band could sound the most similar to another! I've always rebelled against uniformity. If it is just a simple formula then it is not subversive, and if there is no subversion, ladies & gentlemen, it ain't Punk!!" "At the moment Im trying to see how much excitement can be generated with a man, a guitar, & an audiences. If you have to label what I play, call it Rock'n'Roll. Ever onward my fellow being's! Avoid stagnation: whatever else it is, Punk is surely anti-stagnation!?" "By the way, all your view's on what punk represents are as true & valid as mine, however different, we all think our opinion is the right one, but who can judge??

Brookfield-Knights present Mississippi Songbird Bronwynne Brent
When you count BBC Radio 2 legend, 'Whispering' Bob Harris as a fan, the rest of the world sits up and pays attention. Very soon, the UK circuit turned white hot with excitement, she won an invitation to appear at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival, and on her second UK tour she began packing them in. Then Bob invited her into the studio for a live BBC session. Her 2020 tour was to be her most successful yet, with many shows sold out. Then the pandemic struck - in mid-tour - and she was forced to fly home as venues shut up shop and transatlantic flights were withdrawn. The tour was set up to promote her latest album, Undercover, hailed by many reviewers as her best yet. Fans continued ask when shed be back and, although its been a while, this will be a by-popular demand and long-overdue return.
Brookfield-Knights present Bluegrass Sensations, Taff Rapids

And they have been taking the US Bluegrass scene by storm with their blistering style. In the home of the genre, even the diehards of trad love them so much that they want the four-piece to head back over there and make it quick! Invited to take part in the prestigious World Of Bluegrass event last year, the band completed a successful tour over there and headed home with come back soon requests ringing in their ears. This year, they released their new album after returning from a triumphant second American tour, and BBC Radio 6s Cerys Matthews instantly declared herself a fan and told listeners theyd delivered an interesting curveball that deserved a lot of attention.

She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010, she was forging her own career as a vocalist and keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and more recently shone as half of alt-country duo The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo debut. Freckfest present Kris Drever

28 Nov 2025 - 28 Nov 2025

Kris Drever originally comes from Hrossey in the Orkney Islands. Over the years, he has taught himself to be a songwriter, guitarist and singer of note (and sometimes many notes). As well as creating award-winning original songs and instrumental pieces with the trio Lau, he has had a fruitful solo career exploring the cracks between classic and modern songwriting and the traditional music that he comes from. Drevers sound is rooted in the earthy and hypnotic rhythms of much older music, but theres a sophistication to both the lyricism and the instrumentalism which places him skilfully in the present. He has an extensive collection of BBCR2 Folk awards, plus a fistful of Scottish NaTrads awards for everything from best album, best singer and best live act to best original song. He has worked with many excellent musicians, including Jack Bruce, Eddi Reader, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas and Roddy Woomble, and is a member of the beautiful multi-media project Spell Songs: The Lost Words. Currently, Kris is preparing for a series of Lau events around the UK, writing music for a new solo album and learning some old tunes for reasons he cant quite explain.

Cowboy Mouth release their first new track in 30 years on the Last Night from Glasgow label. Cowboy Mouth formed in 1994 by Skinner and MacIntyre, releasing two album in quick succession on the Hamburg-based Marina label. The albums - Life As A Dog (1994) and Love Is Dead (1995) - were well received prior to the group taking a hiatus. Last Night from Glasgow reissued Life as a Dog last year, resulting in some concerts with labelmates The Bathers for which Allan and Hannah joined the group. The chemistry between the four musicians was immediate, resulting in songs being written and an album being recorded. The songs perhaps highlight their interest in Lou Reed's Berlin and Coney Island Baby albums, with pre-production rehearsals taking place on a farm in rural South Lanarkshire. The Swimmer is taken from the forthcoming album by the group (Faultlines), which the group recorded in Beetroot Studio in Airdrie. Grahame Skinner achieved international success as vocalist with Hipsway, whose debut album and attendant hit single (The Honeythief) provided the opportunity to tour the world.
