ZSL London Zoo

The world's oldest scientific zoo, the London Zoo houses a collection of 673 species of animals, with a total of 19,289 individual mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects, including a number of rare and endangered species. The zoo, which is managed by the Zoological Society of London, opened in 1826 to house a collection for scientific study, but opened its doors to the public in 1847. The London site is divided into separate habitat areas, including the Tiger Territory, Gorilla Kingdom, Penguin Beach and others. The ZSL also has a more spacious site at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, which houses larger animals such as elephants and rhinos.
