She worked in a variety of jobs, none of which she particularly enjoyed, before discovering that writing crime fiction was what shed wanted to do all along! Described by The Times as a beguiling author who interweaves past and present she has written twenty eight novels featuring archaeology graduate, DI Wesley Peterson and five crime novels with a supernatural twist featuring DI Joe Plantagenet. She has also written a trilogy set in the aftermath of the First World War featuring Scotland Yard detective DI Albert Lincoln. Kate was awarded the CWA Dagger in the Library in 2019. In her latest book Coffin Island despite many years living in South Devon, DI Wesley Peterson has never visited the tiny island of St Rumon's. She is the author of two works of non-fiction and is a former committee member and former newsletter editor of the campaigning organisation Women in Journalism. The Mystery at Rake Hall is her first novel and begins a superb new historical crime series set in post-war Oxford in which university don C.S. Lewis finds himself an unlikely detective solving a mystery surrounding a hostel for unmarried mothers. Maureen Patons own mother lived at the real-life Rake Hall in Oxford while pregnant with her. This personal story inspired Maureen to write the novel.

She currently produces two series: firstly the Cetin Ikmen series set in modern Istanbul and secondly the Hakim and Arnold series set in contemporary London. In 2005, she won the CWA Silver Dagger for her Ikmen book Deadly Web and in 2024 this series was adapted for TV as The Turkish Detective which was broadcast on BBC2. Barbara has a degree in psychology and prior to working as a full-time writer, she worked in psychiatric hospitals and in the community. She enjoys wandering about in cities, magic and reading obscure non-fiction no-one has ever heard of. She is married with a son and grandson and is owned by a cat called Terry. The Wooden Library is the 27th mystery featuring etin kmen and Mehmet Sleyman, stars of BBC Twos gripping crime drama series The Turkish Detective. Sleymans cousin, Nurettin, has bought the Wooden Library, an ancient building in Istanbul. kmen sets to work cataloguing the contents and discovers the dead body of Senol Ulusoy, the man who sold Nurettin the library. Sleymans detective team must dig deep to reveal a truth that is rooted in the past as well as the present.
