Amy Johnson: Last Flight Out

Amy Johnson: Last Flight Out

20 May 2025 - 20 May 2025

'Amy Johnson: Last Flight Out' Written and performed by Jenny Lockyer Directed by Vern Griffiths A 'stunning' one woman show inspired by hull-born Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia! On the morning of 5th May 1930, a small green Gipsy Moth bi-plane took off from Croydon Aerodrome on a record breaking and thrilling solo flight to Australia. This flight captured the imagination of the world and made an international superstar of ground engineer and pilot, Amy Johnson. 2025 is the 95th anniversary of Amy's astounding achievement and her story is as relevant and exciting as ever. Born in the year the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight, Amy Johnson grew up in an age in which the romantic heights of flying would capture her heart and she would become the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. She lived her life for adventure and the future of aviation. In January 1941, at just 37 years old, Amy was killed while serving her country on a routine flight for the Air Transport Auxiliary, bailing out into the Thames Estuary over Herne Bay. In her short life this lone girl flier achieved much in the face of huge challenge. In this show, we meet Amy in a world of memories, desires, wishes and ambitions and as we find out about her life, we start to see how the pieces fit and the tools Amy used to engineer her dreams to reality.... The show celebrates Amy Johnson , who in her own words was, 'an ordinary woman who did extraordinary things'. The show is 1hr 10minutes long followed by an interval then a Q&A with show creator, Jenny Lockyer, and Amanda Harrison, adventure pilot. This performance and afternoon talk by Amanda Harrison, adventure pilot, are part of the 'Flying High Tour' supported by Arts Council England. Inspired by Amy Johnson, the tour mixes performance, discussion and community workshops exploring aspiration and introducing Amy's incredible story to new audiences. Barbara Canham Turner Lecture

Barbara Canham Turner Lecture

4 Jun 2025 - 4 Jun 2025

The Barbara Canham Turner Lecture: 'It's a long way from there to here' Dr Julie Blake Dr Julie Blake, MBE, University of Hull alumnus, is co-founder of the charity, Poetry By Heart, the national poetry speaking competition for schools and colleges, which endeavours to make poetry engaging and accessible for children and young people. Julies lecture will focus on her education and career journey: If you had told me at pretty much any point in my life that I would now be leading a national transformation of the way young people encounter poetry at school, in the interests of joyful learning, I would have been mystified to say the least. I almost didnt stay on at school at 16, almost didnt take A Level English Literature, almost didnt go to University, almost dropped out of University, tried quite hard not to become an English teacher, accidentally fell out of English teaching and here I am. Yet, when I look back, there were always invisible threads that somehow enabled me to weave this life in poetry. Ill be talking about how I got from there to here. Julie graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Hull in 1988 and received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to Education in King Charles III's New Year's Honours List in 2024. She co-founded Poetry by Heart in 2012 with the then Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. In 2019 Julie was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge and she is currently a Visiting Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University.
