Completing the Trilogy begun with Genius 2.0 and The Work of the Devil, Have We Met? finds Simon standing, like Ulysses in Tennyson’s famous verse, gazing out over the moaning deep and the twinkling rocks and wondering whether to seek a newer world? To smite the sounding furrows? To strive, to seek, and to find? Or whether in fact, to put the kettle on, crack open the Hobnobs and simply yield? Drawing on Joyce, Proust and the career of Philip Schofield to make sense of his own tangled past and possible future, Evans skilfully weaves comedy, pathos and narrowly averted cancellation into an unforgettable two hours of unique entertainment.

Richard Iles' Miniature Brass Emporium: New Futures II
In 2000, MJF commissioned and premiered its first ever new work: New Futures, written by composer, trumpeter and mainstay of the local scene Richard Iles. 25 years later, to help celebrate MJF’s 30th edition, we’ve re-commissioned Richard to revisit and re-develop his concept for the piece, now featuring some ex-students who’ve since benefitted from his expert tuition alongside players from the original line-up. Performed by The Miniature Brass Emporium, his fifteen-piece ensemble that combines elements of funk, soul, and contemporary jazz, the sound is versatile and dynamic, showcasing a range of moods, from roaring ensembles to sensitive and impressionist pieces. Over the years, Richard has written music to feature virtuoso saxophone players Iain Ballamy, Andy Schofield and Iain Dixon – all of which have been premiered at previous Manchester Jazz Festivals. Initially the band was all brass, but is now expanded to include saxophones, broadening the sound palette and increasing the possibilities for Richard’s compositional style. As a member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra, Richard performed with notable musicians Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, and Bill Frisell. As a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith, he accompanied jazz legends Joe Lovano, Kurt Elling, John Scofield, and Gary Burton. All this has had a huge effect on his compositional style and approach to building a jazz ensemble. The current iteration of The Miniature Brass Emporium is an invigorating balance of both young and older players. His student alumni are fast-rising players already forging their own careers, and Richard’s long-time colleagues Mike Walker, Les Chisnall, Eryl Roberts, Tim France and Pete Turner are all stalwarts of the Manchester and national jazz scene.

Rastak: Tales of Earth and Sun

9 Jun 2025 - 9 Jun 2025

“Tales of Earth and Sun” is a journey through the heart of folk music, bringing together six tracks inspired by the rich musical traditions of Kurdistan, Lorestan, Balochistan, Hormozgan, Kermanshah, and a heartfelt love song from Afghanistan. Each piece carries the spirit of a place, telling stories of joy, struggle, and memories that connect generations. The album’s title reflects this deep connection between the earth that holds our roots and the sun that gives us life. These elements shape the melodies, rhythms, and emotions woven into each track, just as they have shaped the lives of the people who created them. From the resilience of Kurdistan to the celebrations of Lorestan, the soulful depth of Balochi music to the vibrant energy of Hormozgan, and the passion of Afghan melodies, this album is a tribute to cultures that have carried their music through time. As always, Rastak haas been trying to revive these traditions with a fresh sound, staying true to their essence while bringing them to life in a new way.

Gorton Philharmonic

Gorton Philharmonic

5 Jul 2025 - 5 Jul 2025

Gorton Philharmonic’s Summer Concert will be a celebration of friendship, opening with the overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg – Wagner’s only comic opera. Gorton Philharmonic President Stephen Threlfall will then be joined by long-time friend and BBC Philharmonic violinist Tom Bangbala to perform Brahms’ Double Concerto, written to reconcile a broken friendship with the violin virtuoso Joachim. Mont Juic (Suite of Catalan dances), jointly composed by Lennox Berkeley and Benjamin Britten after they’d met in Barcelona, will add a touch of Iberia to proceedings before Elgar’s most loved work, his Variation on an original theme ‘Enigma Variations’– fourteen musical portraits of his close friends and acquaintances – brings our 2024/2025 season to a close in majestic style. Tom and Stephen’s association with Gorton Philharmonic goes right back to 1973 when they were both Associate Members, with Tom sitting at the back of the 15-player first violin section and Stephen at the back of the 9-player cello section. By 1975 had risen through the ranks to become leader of the orchestra in a concert at Belle Vue. Stephen made his debut as a soloist with the orchestra performing Lalo’s Cello Concerto at the King’s Hall, Belle Vue. Tom appears to have made his solo appearance performing Bach’s Concerto for two violins in D minor with Martin Milner in December 1975 at the Free Trade Hall. Some years later, Tom and Stephen performed the Brahms Concerto for violin and cello together. In 1992. Stephen performed the Elgar Cello Concerto with Gorton Phil in July 1992 and Tom was the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in July 1999. More recently, Stephen was the narrator when Gorton Phil performed Blake’s The Snowman in December 2022. After many years playing professionally together in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Brahms ‘Double Concerto’ together has, says Stephen, become “a cyclical event that keeps Steve practising his cello…” and it’s fitting that these two lifelong friends will be performing it together again with Gorton Philharmonic in a concert of works connected by friendship.

With gliding camerawork and beautiful Paris settings, Julien Duviviers elegiac film was shot in the Autumn of 1929, just as the silent film era was being replaced by the talkies.
