Saxon Kings Embroidery Talk

Saxon Kings Embroidery Talk

30 Aug 2025 - 24 Oct 2025

Join us for an intimate group talk at All Saints Kingston about our stunning life sized contemporary embroideries, part of the Seven Saxon Kings Embroidery Project. Seven Kings, including the first Kings of England are traditionally thought to have been crowned at Kingston Upon Thames. Before All Saints Church was built, the site was an important estate of the West Saxon Kings and host to Royal coronations. Our talk will tell this significant heritage story through the series of seven spectacular and unique embroidery panels (four of which are currently displayed) touching on the Saxon history of the area, the reigns of the Kings and characters depicted, and the incredible talent that has gone into the design and execution of the panels themselves. Embroidery panels have a long tradition of being used as symbols of power or to tell a story to enforce a message. Such works can be found in the great houses of the nobility or wealthy merchants, royal palaces and of course, in churches. Join us as we delve into these amazing works of textile art. The panels are being created by award winning contemporary embroiderer Jacky Puzey, based on an original design by Sophia Pearson. Jackys speciality of machine embroidery is further embellished with hand embroidery and beading by Beatrice Mayfield, contemporary hand embroiderer and visiting lecturer at the Royal School of Needlework. Our embroideries headline the March/April edition of embroidery magazine. Come and see them in person! If you are wanting to find a local choir to join you'll like singing with us in the Rock Choir. The local Kingston upon Thames choir is run by Surrey based musician Rebecca Rowe. Our choir is made up of many locals who never thought they could sing or hadn't found the right outlet for their secret singing in the car or shower. I don't think any of us expected to make the huge number of great friends we have along the way not just in our own choir but all the nearby Surrey choirs too. See why your local Kingston upon Thames choir is so popular by booking a FREE taster session!. It's the new friends, the performance achievements, the socials, our incredible choir leader Rebecca and above all - singing those beautiful popular chart song arrangements! Here is a quote about our choir - 'Rock Choir is a way for people to express themselves musically in an environment which normally would not allow them to do so. I bet a pound to a pinch of salt there are thousands of guys and girls in the UK itching to sing but are too embarrassed or worried what others may think, and let's face it, if it makes people happy then come on UK lets get behind them!!! Rock Choir is the wonderful innovative idea which is the brain child of Caroline Redman Lusher who I have had the privilege of working with over the past 12 months. Live the dream guys.' - Gary Chilton (Double-platinum selling singer with 'The Soldiers') Rock Choir is a winner of the Red Ribbon 'Big Heart' Award [https://rockchoir.com/awards-achievements/]. and holds 1 former and 2 current Guinness World Records. The choir is also credited with single handedly starting the contemporary choir movement.
