Simon Evans: Simon Evans is Staring at the Sun
Staring at the Sun sees Simon Evans (Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Simon Evans Goes to Market, One Person Found This Helpful) squinting at an uncertain future, revisiting the blue remembered hills of his youth and trying to stay human as the world around him gets smarter. With the AI singularity looming and “reality” feeling increasingly unstable, Evans looks ahead to the coming shockwaves of technology, and back to the analogue pleasures of hitch-hiking, pub bets, and getting properly lost. Turning his famously dry, surgically precise style on the big modern questions: Are we living in a computer simulation? What happens when your body starts issuing software updates you didn’t request? And is staring straight at a solar eclipse, against expert advice, actually an act of courageous self-sacrifice on the road to true enlightenment? Part philosophical exploration, part nostalgic joyride, Staring at the Sun is a hilarious analysis of reality and trust from a man desperately trying to keep his balance while the floor keeps moving. The tone is unmistakably Evans: provocative, literate, and playfully combative, but also soaked in self-awareness. Evans draws on theories propounded by philosophers and mystics since the days of Plato and Ecclesiastes, casting himself as a public intellectual but constantly undercutting his points with brutally funny domestic truths. Simon Evans is one of the UK’s most respected and best loved comedians who has been at the top of his game for over twenty-five years. His TV credits include two appearances on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo, one on Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow, and a season of Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week. On BBC Radio 4 his series Simon Evans Goes to Market, delighting audiences with his witty and insightful take on the comedically-unpromising territory of economics, has had six seasons. He is also a regular on Radio 4’s The News Quiz, and various other panel games, and from 1998 to 2002 wrote and hosted eight series of the news satire, The Way It Is. He also stars in One Person Found This Helpful – a Radio 4 show he co-devised with Jason Hazely and Pozzitive Productions, that has fun with on-line customer reviews and hosted Headliners – a regular preview of the following day’s newspapers with two other comedians on GB News. Evans is also in demand as a columnist and has written extensively for The Spectator, The Telegraph and Spiked.

Enter Andrews as the loveable Mary, a woman who turns the household on its head and forces their suffragette mother and banker father to finally pay their children some attention. Great songs, wonderful Technicolor animation in the fantasy scenes, and if it weren't for Dick Van Dyke's appalling London accent this would, like Mary, be 'practically perfect in every way'.

Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed, just chockful of great songs, characterisation and memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable for the curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch of the West, though.
Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

11 Jul 2026 - 13 Dec 2026

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic as he takes his brand-new show on the road this autumn. So, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years, won 8 awards for performing, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4), written 6 books and 5 play scripts, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, sued the police (and won) 3 times, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right, there’s more, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So, let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at. This is a taster menu of political and personal mayhem, jokes, rants and a state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the hell is going on’ into a cogent evening of stand-up.

Sliding

Sliding

29 Jul 2026 - 29 Jul 2026

The reign of 35mm slides lasted between the mid 60s, precipitated by cheap travel package holidays, and reasonably priced film and development, and the mid-90s before the rise of digital imagery took over. Millions of moments captured in 2-inch square frames. And what happened to those slides? Many were boxed up and placed in storage. Forgotten and lost. Finding their way to car-boot sales or just thrown out. That’s where Adam York-Gregory and Gillian Jane Lees came in as conservators of the discarded memory. For them it is a hobby, a collection, and somewhat of a responsibility. They are archivists by default. Having a collection bordering on 5,000 slides form hundreds of different collections, each one a portal into a past and an image resurrected every time it is illuminated. They would, given the opportunity, share them all with you, but for the sake of brevity and trees, we embarked upon a curatorial process…

JOLT!

JOLT! – Riot and Resilience A series of three short plays by Umar Butt. ‘What do you do when the world shakes, and the ground beneath your feet gives way?’ From Umar Butt, award-winning theatre maker and Tees Valley Artist of the Year, comes Jolt! a powerful, semi-autobiographical exploration of systemic unrest, borders, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Spanning nearly eighty years, this gripping trilogy connects massive historical turning points to the quiet, intense moments of personal survival. Three short plays, set a generation apart, ask what it means to belong when the world around you is tearing itself at the seams. 1947: As the lines of Partition are drawn, a mixed-race couple watches their world fracture overnight during the independence of India and Pakistan. The 1980s:  A mother risks everything, embarking on a perilous and illegal border crossing to bring her child to see their father. The Present: The lens shifts sharply to home, exploring the recent Middlesbrough riots through the eyes of four ordinary people, thrust into the extraordinary heart of the chaos. Visceral, timely, and deeply moving, Jolt! This key work of modern British theatre explores division and highlights the resilience that unites us.

This is Blondie as they were: fearless, genre-bending, dangerously stylish. It’s tight, it’s loud, and it’s a helluva lot of fun – equal parts art-rock, punk energy and dancefloor euphoria. Expect attitude. Expect eyeliner. Expect some of the greatest alternative pop songs of all time! They sold out The Georgian Theatre last time they were here, and the time before that they were smashing it in front of 1500 in Boro with The Southmartins. From the reggae-infused grooves of So Lonely to the stadium-sized anthems Every Breath You Take, Message in a Bottle and Don’t Stand So Close To Me, they faithfully recreate the songs that made The Police one of the biggest bands in the world.

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett

4 Sept 2026 - 27 Feb 2027

This magnetic bond still holds after more than 40 years of attempted escapes and still loved for their total in-yer-face originality, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John's lyrical genius and Willy's outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!) Ever keen to add a new dimension to the show, Willy has a new addition to his array of instruments. Beware the Moose Homp!!. Willy's interest in making instruments began when he commandeered two guitars made by his dad in 1965. One from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank which became affectionally known as the Les Dawson, and the other branded the Mk1 Schitstik electric slide of similar pedigree. These instruments were used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free and Racing Cars) Willy's remark this will be the last time that many of you will see us together again was often hastily misinterpreted as the final throw of the dice, but the reason given it's not us packing up, it's you lot dying off, you know who you are! is often overlooked by eager scribes. And so the rumours abound. Earlier this year John celebrated his 5,000th gig to a packed house at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. For any Otway/Barrett virgins out there who dont know what to expect, be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another: An amazing and irreverent performance by two master entertainers.
