The List

Ashburton Arts Centre

A Community Arts Centre in an old, Grade 2 listed Methodist church building. A team of volunteers organises a wide ranging arts programme, plus regular dance, art, drama, yoga and music classes and workshops. The beautiful acoustics in the main hall have already led to several musicians declaring it to be one of their favourite places to play. The Guardian listed it in December 2018 as one of “the best small UK music venues”.

Katie Spencer

Katie Spencer

3 Jun 2026 - 3 Jun 2026

Presented by our friends at From The Whitehouse, who write: Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer's landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer's music, which you can listen to right here: katiespencerofficial.bandcamp.com The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70s folk and songwriter movements. Katie Spencer's widely celebrated new album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. The inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. As live music has returned to our world, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more, eyes closed, in the moment, performing. Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music. Guitarist Magazine One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections Ive encountered in some time. RnR Magazine ★★★★★ Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician. Record Collector A timeless English folk album, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning. Shindig! Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and, to conjure a name we hear less often these days, Bridget St John. Prog Magazine The way Katie plays is never contrived, showy or imitative; it sounds true a world-class folk guitarist fRoots Katie's guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar's strings and produces little tapestries of song Ralph McTell katiespencer.net facebook.com/katiespencermusic twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic instagram.com/katiespencermusic Ashburton Arts Centre Always three prices please pay what you can. Heather Findlay Known for her magical, evocative voice and an ability to interpret and inhabit a range of styles with a mix of power and feeling, Heather Findlay is one of the finest vocalists working in music today. Prog magazine lauded her, Deliciously sultry vocals, whilst Maverick magazine hailed her, Pure, crystalline voice. She grabs your heart in an almost vice-like grip. At 19 Heather was asked to join up-and-coming rock band Mostly Autumn. In the thirteen extraordinary years that followed, Bryan Josh, Heather and company went on to enjoy creative success, winning the most devoted of fans, writing and recording many albums together. The band toured internationally throughout that time. In her subsequent solo career Heather has continued to learn and to develop. The boundless depth and dynamism of her stage presence, coupled with the richness, power and beauty of that instantly identifiable voice continues to captivate listeners. Zaid's UK Tour in 2025 was a big hit, taking in Bristol's Cotham Club, Elementary Festival, Glastonbury Festival and London's Jamboree Club amongst others. Audiences were very moved. Here's a quote from Elementary Festival: There are moments when music becomes more than sound, it becomes collective prayer. This set at Elementary Festival deserves its own story. When Zaid took the stage, his voice carried more than melody, it carried memory, longing, resistance, and love. As we chanted back Hala lala layya with him, we werent just singing we were remembering. Rooted in ancient folk song, these words echo a love so powerful it would be, Written on birds wings. Carried by wind. Etched in tears. In that moment, we sang not just for one another, but for all who long to be free. For Palestine. For the ones whose songs are interrupted. For the voices that rise even when silenced. It was joy... It was resistance. It was ancestral rhythm meeting modern grief. And it was holy. May we keep singing. May we never forget. May our voices carry around the world. How wonderfully blessed to be present with this. If Trees Could Talk: Trees Within Us and the Microbiome
Trees Within Us and the MicroBiome Artist Andrew Carnie partners in research in neuroscience, biology, technology and visual arts. His "Winter Tree" project explores how the dendrite form in our bodies. The neurons in our brain mirror dendrite forms in nature; the tree in the landscape. The tree-like structure is found everywhere allowing distribution, collection and connection: and in our brains, is ultimately core to how we think. His developing project The MicroBiome further explores how we are not independent of the world around us - and in us. Dr. Lucy Loveday is a qualified GP and Senior NHS Educator.
