A team of volunteers organises a wide ranging arts programme, plus regular dance, art, drama, yoga and music classes and workshops. Abbi Patrix: Journeys In Place: Time suspended above the world'what does it have to tell'
This performance event brings together stories gleaned by internationally-acclaimed storyteller Abbi Patrix during a whole life spent travelling. Tales, legends, myths, anecdotes, intimate memories fill pages of his travel diary, day after day. Here, he simply offers to share his taste and love for these stories ; to take us away to an unlikely dream world, to an impossible reality. To cross the planet by means of stories. Balanced between written material and oral improvisation, Journeys in Place is lead by associations, by moods, by the atmosphere. Abbi Patrix unfurls his stories, giving them a new context each time, always in the present instant, always interacting with the audience, bringing the diversity of his repertoire to our ears. Abbi Patrix is a French-Norwegian storyteller living in France. He has been exploring the art of storytelling for the past thirty years, and he continues today, treading the path on a search for continual development. His work is at the cross-roads of theatre, music and movement, enriched by multi-disciplinary material, on a permanent quest for new ways and voices to enrich the form of storytelling: an art which is developing today with great impetus in many different places in France and abroad. In his productions, Abbi Patrix uses both personal and contemporary forms, which he constructs using different sources: traditional stories, life stories, diaries, his own memories and literary texts. Music with storytelling is his favorite field of work. This event is being put on here as part of Holding the Tail of the Wolf by the Anima Mundi School of Storytelling, which says: This is a beautiful and immersive new four module training programme for storytellers, performers, artists, and educators, and anyone who longs for deeper connection to the wild world, to Mystery, and to the stories that are hungry to be told. Spafford Campbell

Spafford Campbell

28 Oct 2025 - 28 Oct 2025

Real World Records signed fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell, twenty-something mould-breaking and conservatoire-trained virtuosos, in May 2025. They release their album Tomorrow Held on 1 August 2025. It is a work comprising of eight largely instrumental tracks that fold in elements of jazz, post-rock and chamber classical music while raiding the folk music toolbox. Call it what you want: post-folk. Trad-noir. Folk nihilism. We realised that we both wanted to push accepted sounds into new territories, says the Leeds-raised Spafford, a nominee for BBC Young Composer of the Year Award and a scholarship student at London's Royal Academy of Music. Born to writer parents his mother's extended family also sing English folk songs he grew fascinated with the drone-based fiddle stylings of Caoimhín Raghallaigh of Irish superstars The Gloaming. For a while he toured with a vintage village green fair called Giffords Circus. Our music reflects our backgrounds, says Campbell, who studied at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music and performed as a sideman to Sam Lee, Sam Sweeney and iconic singer-guitarist Martin Simpson.Owen's fiddle playing has a wonderfully deep underpinning in tradition, which is sort of ever-present, so if we are trying to craft a sound with its own energy, that trad undertone cant really ever get completely lost. While redolent of Talk Talk's moody, experimental 1988 opus Spirit of Eden, and riven with a Bon Iver-ish sense of transcendence, Tomorrow Held is a work greater than the sum of its parts parts that include effects pedals, ambient cassette loops, flashes of electric guitar, some electronic processing on fiddle and impressionistic accompaniment from Alex Lyon on bass clarinet and Ben Nicholls on double bass. NOBATB: with Robert West Band & Jackdaw Road
The last Monday of every month here is Not Only But also The Blues where we feature some of the finest exponents in the south west, and beyond, of music whose roots are in the blues. Featuring: Robert West Band / Jackdaw Road Jackdaw Road is a Dartmoor based blues/Americana band formed by guitarist Chris Mann to showcase his own material. Chris is well known on the Devon music scene having played in many different cover bands since the 80s, but here he gets a chance to show off his songwriting skills. The band's style ranges from melodic ballads to barn-storming blues/rock with Chris's distinctive guitar always leading the way. He is joined by his wife Emma on vocals, Sam Henderson on drums and Ralph Dunlop on bass. Robert West Band is a power trio that has been together for nearly two and a half years. Band members come from backgrounds as diverse as blues, ragtime, classic rock and folk rock. They cite influences from Robert Johnson to Gary Clark Jr. Their passion is playing guitar-driven shameless blues, with a nod towards rock & roll. You might also hear a touch of Ry Cooder somewhere in the Mix Along with the usual blues jam/open mic session. Klonk

Klonk

3 Jul 2025 - 3 Jul 2025

They promise their juggernaut will be 100% certified pure industrial grade rock-n-roll dynamite, crafting stone-cold killer cuts out of klezmer, Balkan, funk, jazz, metal and hip-hop. Expect full-tilt horns and wild strings going toe-to-toe with a powerhouse rhythm section. Expect scratching and sampling. Expect Faster Louder Klezmer. The music of Klonk has its origins in the secular Jewish and native folk music of Eastern Europe. We play tunes that have been passed down since the Middle Ages. For millenia dances, rituals, ceremony and celebrations have had their own traditional musical accompaniment. The style of each varies according to each region and ethnic group. The history is meandering and often confusing, and with each peek into the past there are contradictions and differing opinions. The traditional Klezmarin (Jewish musicians) and their tunes were almost wiped out during the Holocaust and it is only thanks to the hard work and dedication of a handful of people that they are still heard today. The Jewish and Romany peoples had much in common and shared and influenced each other's melodies. Despite the history being difficult to unravel one thing is very clear. The legacy is rich and celebratory and the tunes live on through the musicians and groups that perfom them, each group adding their own unique flavour to the pot. They have a timeless quality and seem fresh even today. Video of Kast Offs Always three prices - please pay what you can. Simply great musicians, and three lovely guys. Come and see them you won't regret it! Andy Williamson, Ashburton Arts Centre B.D. Lenz is a funky/jazz guitarist from the New York area and first played Ashburton Arts Centre in 2023. He has released 13 highly acclaimed recordings as a leader (featuring such jazz greats as Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Mark Egan, Will Lee, & Joel Rosenblatt) and has played thousands of gigs in North America, UK, and Europe. His music has been featured in hundreds of TV programmes globally including Breaking Bad (AMC), Catfish (MTV), and Young Sheldon (CBS) to name a few. The New Jersey native has played guitar since his early teens, is a graduate of Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and has studied with such masters as Mike Stern, Vic Juris, and Charlie Banacos along the way.
