Bankfield Museum

Located in Akroyd Park within the Akroydon model village conservation area, this Victorian mansion became a museum in 1887. Displays include local history, costumes, art, toys, military paraphernalia, jewellery and textiles. There are also temporary exhibitions. The museum has free parking and is close to Halifax transport links.

Discover your inner artist by joining our learning team for some creative family fun and produce your own masterpiece to take home each time. Our artists will be running creative making sessions on the first Saturday of the month, using a range of materials and techniques - every session will be different! Suitable for children from 5 to 12 years One ticket per child. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults do not need tickets. Exploring Fibre, Colour and Texture
Join textile artist Jane Riley for an interactive workshop on the creative uses of yarn as she explores how weavers use colour, texture and fibres. Using fibre blending to create wraps, balls and bundles to inspire your fibre designs these workshops are a chance for fibre artists of any ability to play with yarns and explore their possibilities. Please note this event will be held in our Education Room, which is located on the first floor of Bankfield Museum.
Vintage Sewing Machines Attachments Binders and Rufflers!
Have you ever wondered what those intriguing looking metal attachments that came with your vintage sewing machine can do? This year we are offering 3 sessions with each one covering 2 different types of attachments to help you make the most of your vintage sewing machine. Come to one or join them all basic sewing machine experience will be beneficial, and each workshop stands alone. Perfect for curious beginners and sewing enthusiasts alike! The second of our three attachment sessions covers binders and rufflers. We will dive deep into the attachment box to help you identify ruffler feet, gathering feet, shirring attachments and binders. You will learn how to neaten and enhance seam allowances, armholes, necklines etc. with commercial or homemade bias binding, and how to ruffle, gather, shirr fabric to give your projects shape and texture. Please do not bring your own sewing machine. All equipment including vintage sewing machines, attachments, thread, fabric etc. will be provided for you. You are welcome to bring your own box of attachments to help you with identification. Please note, spaces are limited so booking is essential. Have you ever wondered what those intriguing looking metal attachments that came with your vintage sewing machine can do? This year we are offering 3 sessions with each one covering 2 different types of attachments to help you make the most of your vintage sewing machine. Come to one or join them all basic sewing machine experience will be beneficial, and each workshop stands alone. Perfect for curious beginners and sewing enthusiasts alike! The last of our three attachment sessions will focus on fabric manipulation and decoration as we learn how to use tuckmarkers and embroidery / darning attachments. We will dive to the bottom of the attachment box to help you identify tuckmarkers, embroidery / darning attachments and cover plates. You will learn how to create beautifully consistent looking tucks which can be used to add decorative structure and function to your dress making, home furnishing or other fabric projects. Then try your hand at stitching your name or simple shapes using free motion embroidery attachments. Please do not bring your own sewing machine. All equipment including vintage sewing machines, attachments, thread, fabric etc. will be provided for you. You are welcome to bring your own box of attachments to help you with identification. Create your own felted Christmas Baubles in our relaxed session, using the needle felting technique, which is a wonderful, tactile craft that allows you to shape and sculpt wool into three-dimensional objects. In this session, you will learn how to cover a former with the wool and applying different decorations to create either Santa's, Christmas puddings, coloured spiral or other festive designs. Crafty Baggage classes allow you to spend a few hours in a friendly setting crafting with like-minded people. These needle felting sessions are suitable for beginners or if you want to improve your felting skills, where each project is broken down into simple steps, with assistance always available with each section, and all materials, and equipment will be provided. Hot drinks are included in the ticket and will be available throughout the workshop. Vintage Sewing Machines: Restoration and Repair - Vibrating Shuttle Machines
Following the popularity of our first repair and maintenance workshop, this second full-day session turns its focus to vibrating shuttle sewing machines, including the much-loved Singer 127 and other machines of that type. Suitable for beginners and enthusiasts alike, the day will explore how to use, care for, and maintain these robust and characterful machines, helping you better understand how they work and keep them running well. Throughout the day, well explore essential maintenance techniques, including cleaning, oiling, timing basics, and troubleshooting common issues. Well also look closely at the construction and mechanics of the Singer 127, giving you the knowledge to care for your own machine and keep it stitching beautifully for years to come. Spaces are limited book your place now and discover the enduring charm of these remarkable machines, one stitch at a time. Hot drinks and water are included and will be available throughout the day, but we ask that you bring a packed lunch with you. Suitable for teenagers and adults. From Loft to Oz : Adventures of a Mary Quant Dress
Join us for a talk with Jenny Fenwick about the exciting journey her 1964 Mary Quant dress went on after being rediscovered in her loft! The dress has been on display across the world including in the V&A Mary Quant Exhibition in London in 2019 and appeared on the BBC Documentary, Secrets of the Museum. The dress is now part of the V&A collection. Alongside the talk will have, on display, an original Mary Quant dress from the Bankfield Museum collection.
