Barnfield Theatre

Exeter Barnfield Theatre is a purpose-built theatre located in the heart of Exeter’s city centre, and is a music, dance, drama, lecture and conference venue available for hire. The building itself dates from 1890, when it was the home of the Exeter Literary Society, and has been variously occupied by the GPO, Civil Defence, the Tax Office and the Exeter Little Theatre Company. Now completely independent and run by a charity, today the theatre plays host to a wide variety of shows, conferences, Mother & Toddler groups, theatre schools and great music. We have a small but dedicated team of staff and volunteers who maintain the building, deliver brochures, serve drinks in Barnfield Bar, serve snacks and ice creams, meet and greet, man the box office desk and telephone and work hard to make your visit to the Barnfield Theatre the most welcoming, friendly and entertaining experience it can be. We have several spaces available for hire including the main auditorium, a smaller rehearsal/performance space, and a bar. We also have a gallery suitable for small exhibitions. With the energy of your loudest friend holding court at a dinner party, this show is a messy, self-examination from a woman who’s had many breakdowns and rebirths, and has truly stopped giving a fuck what strangers on the internet think about her. Grace Campbell is a comedian, writer, director, and actor from London. Unearthing the Story You Want to Tell (or That Wants You to Tell It)
Hannah Mulder presents: Sometimes the way we approach creative projects can be extractive – we mine ourselves for ideas – but how can we allow an idea or story to emerge and tend it while it does? This is unearthing – like an archaeologist uncovering something and bringing their experience and understanding to reading, shaping and communicating what emerges. Maybe you have a thousand ideas and don't know where to start, maybe you are in a dry patch or want to take a first step into making, or maybe there's a specific idea you're courting- or you're simply wondering what your next creative project is. This is an opportunity to spend some time unblocking, inviting, playing with, shaping and unearthing what idea or ideas might want to have a deeper conversation with you, in the company of others. This is a creative workshop for artists and makers in any form, at any stage, led by Hannah Mulder, an associate artist at Exeter Northcott and Artistic Director of MakeShift. You'll leave feeling more intimate with a story or idea and have some tools in your kit for how to generate ideas in a regenerative way. Whatever your needs, you are very welcome to join this workshop. If you have any access requirements that would help make attending possible, please contact [email protected] to discuss them and we will do our very best to accommodate you. This event is part of Reclaim Festival, our yearly celebration of women in the arts. Featuring brilliant new writing, not-so-new-but-also-brilliant writing, workshops, music and more, immerse yourself in locally sourced female greatness, to be enjoyed by everyone.

Maria's approach welcomes positive challenge whilst nurturing the comfort zones of your own movement. Lunchbox Session: Emily Williams

Lunchbox Session: Emily Williams

19 Jun 2026 - 19 Jun 2026

What does it mean to be making and producing new work in these times? Particularly as a w/oman and in Devon. Join Emily Williams for a lunchtime session to explore this question further, hear the findings of her recent action research project Invisible Threads (reviewing the producing culture of the Southwest), listen to how others might be finding solutions, and connect over navigating the same challenges. To make or produce new work right now means navigating an ecology that is structurally uneven. Funding remains competitive and inconsistent; institutions are still reckoning – often slowly – with entrenched inequities, and the labour of care, both visible and invisible, continues to shape who gets to create and how. For many w/omen, making work is not a singular act of authorship but a negotiation with time, access, and sustainability. It means working inside a contradiction. Urgency sits alongside exhaustion; visibility coexists with precarity. For women making theatre and live performance in the UK, this moment is defined as much by constraint as it is by possibility. And yet, beautiful work is being made and produced — boldly and in spite of, on its own terms. There is a refusal to wait for permission. Female artists are building alternative structures, forming collectives, and redefining what constitutes "theatre" itself: hybrid forms, interdisciplinary practices, performances that unfold across digital and physical spaces, that centre lived experience without apology. How do we continue to take up space in an industry that has not always made room? To tell stories that have been consistently sidelined. To experiment, to fail, to begin again; not as an exception, but as part of a wider, ongoing reshaping of our sector and the communities that contribute to the stories we tell. Making and producing new work now is not just about production; it is about reimagining the conditions under which work is made. It is a practice of persistence, of care, and of collective redefinition. Emily Williams is a Creative Consultant, Executive Producer, Coach & Facilitator based in Devon working across the cultural sector to support the development of extraordinary ideas and ambitious organisations in the U.K. She has 16 years' experience and over the last 9 years has held leadership roles including most recently CEO of Theatre Bristol. Emily has built a reputation for values-led leadership; she holds skills in ambitious and considered strategic and organisational development, business planning, fundraising, sector-facing development along with the producing of internationally renowned work often in non-traditional theatre spaces. Emily is a non-exec director of Rising Arts Agency and part of the Clore Alumni. Clients include; Action Hero, Alibi, Beyond Face, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Creative UK, Fotonow, Gloucester Culture Trust, o-region, Super Culture, Radical Ritual, Goldsmiths, & Libraries Unlimited. With a Master's from Cambridge and dual Master's degrees in History and Economics from India, she investigates performance not only as artistic expression but as a strategic tool within the cultural economy. Her research applies the Cultural Economy Model to examine how both heritage practices and service-driven industries adapt to shifting global markets, using performance to navigate client expectations, brand storytelling, and emotional labour. Whether through digital platforms, hybrid services, or curated cultural experiences, performance emerges as a vital mechanism for economic resilience and social meaning. Beyond academia, Pratiti is engaged in teaching, filmmaking, and journalism, committed to ensuring that scholarship remains rooted in real-world cultural transformation.
