Mike Bubbins, star of hit podcast The Socially Distant Sports Bar, and of BBC television comedies Mammoth, Tourist Trap and The Unexplainers, unleashes Throwback, his first ever solo UK stand-up tour. And things may never be the same again. Throwback is a powerful, thought-provoking, visceral hour of stand-up comedy, that pushes boundaries, defies neat descriptions and challenges the audience... As if it is! It’s actually an hour and a half of really funny stories, pretty impressive characterisations, possibly a song (he said he’ll see how that goes), a bit of nostalgia about the good old days, a bit of optimism about the good new days, and Mike generally having a laugh about life and not taking himself, or anything else, too seriously. Having said that, he may, at some point in the show, get very annoyed at berks, whether in the past, the present, or the future. Very annoyed. So basically Throwback is a comedy show about Bubbins sharing, and bringing to life, the stuff that he finds funny. As comedy concepts go, it’s a pretty straightforward one, really.

This is a celebration of young voices in our local primary schools and an opportunity for our budding singers to perform in front of family and friends in a professional venue. Our performers for this event are from Brickhill, Great Barford, Putnoe and Renhold primary schools. We also have performances from solo singers and a guest band.

Fresh from his sold-out, critically-acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe run and becoming the most viewed British comedian of all time on TikTok, world-famous prankster and Lee Nelson creator Simon Brodkin is back with an outrageous new stand-up show. In Screwed Up Simon rips into celebrity culture, social media, the police, Putin, Prince Andrew and Jesus. Nothing is off limits in this hilarious show, including his own mental health, his family, his five arrests and how he once found himself at an underground sex party.

The Bedford Sinfonia kick our 60th Anniversary season off with a spectacular opening concert, in a series where the Bedfordshire Orchestral Society will perform all nine of Beethoven's symphonies! In the same approximate year that the great Josef Haydn's last symphony was being composed and performed - 1795 - so too did the first sketches of Beethoven's first symphony arise. Beethoven's style owed much to Haydn (who was, for a time, his tutor), and so the classical torch was passed from one generation to the next. The second concert in our 60th Anniversary Beethoven-themed season is 'Radiant and Resolute' - a title that truly encapsulates the three pieces the Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra will be performing! First up is a double bill from two Russian Romantic composers - Borodin's 'Polovstian Dances' from his opera Prince Igor, and Rachmaninov's 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.' These bright and sparkling pieces will set the stage for Beethoven's third symphony, titled 'Eroica.' Originally dedicated to Napoleon and the ideals of the French Revolution, Beethoven may have torn the sheet music to shreds when he heard Napoleon declared himself emperor, but the power behind the music still survives. We are fortunate enough to be joined by 'profoundly gifted' (Gramophone) pianist Katya Apekisheva for this concert! This is it, folks! Our very own Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra takes on one of, if not the, most defining pieces of the classical music canon - the almighty 'Beethoven's Fifth!' But before that, we first turn to Finland for Sibelius' 'Karelia Suite,' an homage to the titular region's landscape, and Finland's national pride. These depictions of nature continue in Beethoven's sixth symphony, nicknamed the 'Pastoral' due to it musically representing, in part, birdsong, a babbling brook, and even a thunderstorm. But perhaps the true thunder exists within Beethoven's most famous symphony, and within the first four notes that define it. Though the word is, these days, perhaps a little overused, 'Beethoven's Fifth' is truly iconic , having inspired countless musicians from multiple genres - it was even adapted into the disco instrumental 'A Fifth of Beethoven,' in 1976 by Walter Murphy. As we enter the second half of our 60th Anniversary Beethoven Symphonic Cycle, we're also replicating how the fifth and sixth symphonies were premiered - in exactly the same concert! What better way than to commemorate our 60th Anniversary celebrations with a truly astounding concert - one where the season goes Out With A Bang! This is officially our Gala concert to mark our 60th Anniversary, and thus we are incredibly grateful to be joined by our friends in Bedford Choral Society: their wall of sound is beyond compare! We end with just two pieces in this last concert, but their power and pomp promise to provide! Shostakovich's grandiose and triumphant 'Festive Overture' leads the way, a celebratory piece commissioned for the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. And speaking of anniversaries, 2027 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the composer around whom this whole season is structured - Ludwig Van Beethoven. We thus see the season off in spectacular fashion, with his ninth symphony. Regarded along with the fifth as a masterpiece of the classical genre, it contains many treasures - among them the 4th movement, more commonly known as the bombastic 'Ode To Joy.' So join us for our very own 'Ode To Joy,' as we commemorate the Bedfordshire Orchestral Society's 60th Anniversary, and the 200th anniversary of the death of a truly monumental composer.
