The mending club runs every first Monday of the month. We invite you to bring something to mend, and we share the tools and the know-how on how to get started. It's an opportunity to make new friends, enjoy friendly chat and drink, whilst learning new skills in a relaxing environment. The focus is on the meditative, life-enhancing joy of craft and being in the moment, whilst having fun sharing skills and just catching-up on life and supporting each other. Walthamstow-based textile artist Mika Sembongi set up Monday Mending Club as a reaction to the climate crisis with an emphasis on positive action. Since starting the club in February 2022, we have introduced complete beginners to both traditional invisible mending and the Japanese craft of Sashiko mending, where a repair is elaborated upon with creative stitching to transform the fault into a new, individual design to be worn with pride. We mend clothes not because we can't afford new clothes, but because we can't afford to throw them away. No need to book a spot - just turn up on the night.

All night long we’re putting them head-to-head with the tunes, the prizes and the bragging rights on the line. And yes, fancy dress ideas galore. Think double denim, shell suits and bucket hats versus velour tracksuits, trucker caps and low-rise chaos. If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to dress like a pop star, this is it. Expect huge singalongs, ridiculous prizes, confetti everywhere and a room full of people losing their voices. Bongo’s Bingo: 90s v 00s. Pick a side. Dress the part. Lose all dignity. Each venue will have a different layout and facilities and so we would always recommend contacting the venues directly if you have any specific access enquiries.

Restoration London Shahiko and Boro Stich Mending Workshop
Come and learn the traditional Japanese mending embroidery method of Sashiko and Boro stitching- to fix and revive your damaged or old clothing... Sashiko means "little stabs" in Japanese or "little pierce" and is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching that started out of practical need during the Edo era (1615-1868) in Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches, making the piece ultimately stronger and warmer. Worn out clothes were pieced together to make new garments by using simple running stitches. These clothes increased their strength with this durable embroidery. Boro is very close to Sashiko, both use white thread on indigo and both are mending techniques but boro meaning “rags” or “tattered cloth,” refers to textiles that have been patched many times, so giving a far less structured effect. This sturdy method makes both Boro and Sashiko perfect for mending denim.

Young Love Club With Indie Amnesty Djs
Young Love Club - The Indie Disco for Indie kids and their kids. After spending years squeezing into the skinniest of jeans, dragging and losing thousands of CDs across London, running clubs across Shoreditch and Camden, now, nicely settled into middle agedhood, we noticed a wasteland. Hundreds of former indie kids walking aimlessly round the farmers markets on a Saturday morning with their kids, wishing for something more from their lives. But what was missing? We miss hoodies, we yearn for sticky dancefloors and dancing to the coolest music from Yo! Majesty or Hadouken! or track or straight up bangers from The Walkmen, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys & Klaxons. We are bringing these days back. But the stickiness will probably be from spilt apple juice or baby sick. This is Young Love Club, where we will get to relive, this time with our kids, the glory days of our youths. This time we will not end up in squat parties, but home in time to get the kids’ dinner and ready for Noel’s House Party- that’s still a thing right? We will introduce the kids to our love when we were young. Our Young Love. And who better to start proceedings with than none other than Mystery Jets DJing their indie bangers! Dress up how you did in the time of ‘Indie Sleaze, whether you were a Mardy Bum in skinny jeans and tweed or a ‘New Raver’ in American Apparel day glo and hi tops. Get your kids to sport the look too! We will turn Big Penny into a haven for indie disco nostalgia and make sure there’s loads of fun for the kids along the way too with facepainters and more activities tbc. Expect super special guests along the way for this new day disco. Presented by Young Love Club All ages

Pints of Knowledge: the Origin of Eukaryotes: the Most Important Evolutionary Event
The Origin of Eukaryotes: the Most Important Evolutionary Event with Aidan Pearce Summary: Where did we come from? Are we alone in the universe? Why are mitochondria the powerhouses of the cell? If you have ever wanted to know the answer to these questions you should probably know about the origin of eukaryotes. That’s because the origin of eukaryotes is the origin of us. It is the rarest major evolutionary event to occur and it is responsible for all of the complex life we see around us from plants, fungi, and ourselves. This talk will cover eukaryogenesis: the formation of the cells which make up all complex life as we know it. This field of evolutionary biology touches on topics ranging from microbiology, geochemistry, and philosophy. I will discuss the history of our understanding of eukaryogenesis, how the environment of Earth started this transition over 2 billion years ago, and finally we will explore the consequences of this for life on our planet. Bio: Aidan Pearce is an evolutionary biologist whose passion for the history of life began with fossil hunting on the beaches of the Isle of Wight. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Warwick and completed a master’s in Human Evolution at the University of Cambridge before researching experimental evolution at the University of Bath. He is now studying for a PhD in Evolutionary Biology at University College London, focusing on the origin of eukaryotes. A lifelong enthusiast for evolution, they are always keen to share their fascination with how life evolves. What is Pints of Knowledge? Pints of Knowledge: Memento Mori: How People Remembered to Die
Memento Mori: How People Remembered to Die with Dr. Dan O'Brien Summary Death was everywhere in pre-industrial Europe as skulls, skeletons or bones appeared beyond the grave in moments mundane and extraordinary. People wore jewellery with tiny skeletons, watches were shaped like skulls and even a simple glasses case was decorated with a doctor encountering a skeleton. These bold symbols of death had one familiar message that appealed to all levels of society, ‘memento mori’ or ‘remember to die’. This was a warning encouraging people to prepare themselves for their end but also prompting them to consider the inevitability of their end despite the distractions of life. Using London’s churches, churchyards and museums this talk examines how reminders of death were an integral part of everyday life and asks what it tells us about people’s ideas about dying. As we look upon these striking reminders of death we can reflect on how our own ideas of death are shaped by the world around us. Bio Dr Dan O’Brien is a historian of death based at the Centre for Death and Society, University of Bath. His research primarily focuses on the development of the undertaking trade and the role of the trade in funerals of the period. His current research centres mostly on London and Dan seeks to understand how the undertakers and their goods were perceived by society. He speaks widely about different themes in the history of death including maritime death, mourning jewellery and the undead. What is Pints of Knowledge? Pints of Knowledge is a series of public talks where experts, researchers, and big thinkers share fascinating ideas all in the relaxed setting of a pub. Infection is represented across films and television, but where is the science within the fiction? This talk will explore the truth of infection processes, from diagnosis to vaccines, and how they are represented in the movies. It will discuss why outbreaks look different in films that cover the start of an outbreak, compared to how they are handled in examples, such as The Girl with All the Gifts, which is set within a world where an outbreak has become a pandemic and life has changed forever. It will also cover my personal Science House of Horrors, such as the fact that no one ever washes their hands on screen, as well as how Alien would have been a very short film if anyone had listened to Ripley when she refused to open the door in order to follow protocol.
