Suddenly Last Summer

Suddenly Last Summer

27 Aug 2025 - 30 Aug 2025

Savagely poetic and provocative, Tennessee Williams’ rarely revived Suddenly Last Summer is a contemporary masterpiece. This is Sebastian’s garden, a place where the line between truth and lies, sanity and insanity are blurred. Welcome to the eerie Garden District of New Orleans, filled with carnivorous fly traps, subversive secrets, and broken hearts. Sebastian, the only son of wealthy widow Violet Venable, has died while on vacation with his rebellious cousin Catharine. What the girl saw that day last summer was so horrifying that she is presumed insane and committed to an asylum in an attempt to protect the Venable name. As time passes, however, Catharine’s ravings about Sebastian’s proclivities, and his end, become so transgressive that his mother calls on an aspirational young doctor who is desperate to fund pioneering new medical practices. The catch - he must find a way to silence Catherine for good. Following last year’s five star, critically acclaimed production of Homestead, the Outstanding Theatre Award-winning Conor Baum Company (Brighton Fringe 2025) return to BOAT, and the American South, to present Williams’ thrilling examination of legacy, sanity, and sexuality - a potent, autobiographical, Southern gothic melodrama that will cut straight through the heart, intoxicate the senses and haunt the mind. Playing hits including God Only Knows, I Get Around, Surfin’ Safari, Little Deuce Coupe and lots more. Brian Wilson revolutionised popular music through groundbreaking production techniques and sophisticated compositions. As the band's principal songwriter, arranger, and producer, Wilson transformed the recording studio into an instrument itself, culminating in the groundbreaking Good Vibrations-a "pocket symphony" that pushed the boundaries of recording technology. His masterpiece, Pet Sounds (1966), redefined pop music with its complex arrangements and emotional depth, influencing artists like The Beatles, who cited it as inspiration for Sgt. Pepper. Wilson's innovative use of unconventional instruments, novel microphone placements, and intricate vocal harmonies set new standards for music production. Though mental health challenges sidelined him for decades, Wilson's legacy endures. The 2004 completion of his abandoned masterwork Smile provided a triumphant conclusion to his story. Today, Wilson stands as one of popular music's most influential creators, whose artistic vision elevated pop music to unprecedented heights.
