Rpo: Makoto Ozone Plays Gershwin

Rpo: Makoto Ozone Plays Gershwin

27 May 2026 - 27 May 2026

A clarinet soars upwards – and immediately, you can picture the skyscrapers of jazz-age Manhattan. There’s nothing quite like Rhapsody in Blue, and few living pianists play Gershwin with more flair than our soloist today, Japanese jazz legend Makoto Ozone. And with RPO Conductor-in-Residence Kevin John Edusei is conducting, there are endless pictures to be painted and stories to be told. High in the mountains of Transylvania, György Ligeti hears a shepherd blow his horn, and gypsy fiddles flash around the campfire. And far from his Hungarian homeland, composed in the USA, Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra sets out to put a great orchestra through its paces and ends up by punching the air with glee. This is music that loves life – and believe us, you can feel it.’ “…unfailingly inventive and entertaining.” The Scotsman on Makoto Ozone This concert is generously supported by Calderwood.
Rpo: Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5

Rpo: Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5

10 Jun 2026 - 10 Jun 2026

Tchaikovsky never held back. He asked for his Fifth Symphony to be performed con desiderio e passione – with desire and passion – and when guest conductor Ben Glassberg joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall we can promise exactly that. With its heartfelt melodies and blazing colours, we love playing Tchaikovsky’s Fifth as much as you love hearing it, and there’s no more stirring way to finish a season packed with music at its most uninhibited. But that’s not all: the evening opens with a delightful new miniature from Composer-in-Association Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away). And Clara-Jumi Kang brings all her world-class insight to Britten’s powerful Violin Concerto, written on the eve of World War II. Strong emotions, stunningly played. “The Britten… had a dazzling performer in Clara-Jumi Kang: dedicated, highly expressive and varied.” Bachtrack
Zios Warsaw Philharmonic

Zios Warsaw Philharmonic

19 May 2026 - 19 May 2026

Tchaikovsky never did anything by halves, and he poured all his heartache, his sorrow and his matchless gift for melody into a final symphony like no other. Don’t be misled by the name: ‘Pathétique’ means ‘full of feelings’ and when Krzysztof Urbański conducts the Warsaw Philharmonic, that’s exactly what they’ll bring – as well as glowing colours and some of the greatest tunes even Tchaikovsky ever composed. These superb Polish musicians are always a big hit at Cadogan Hall; tonight they share a lost masterpiece by the postwar Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and join pianist Alexandra Dariescu in the teenage Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto – true romance, played with love. Hear it, and feel your heart melt.

Choral At Cadogan 25-26: The Sixteen With Britten Sinfonia Angels Unawares
When Sir James MacMillan writes a new choral work, the world takes notice because few living composers write with more honesty and passion. With a span of around an hour, Angels Unawares is a major new statement from MacMillan coupled with a brilliant libretto written by Robert Willis, former Dean of Canterbury, completed shortly before his untimely death in autumn 2024. Who better to give the work’s UK premiere than The Sixteen and the Britten Sinfonia, both tireless champions of MacMillan’s work? Angels Unawares is commissioned and supported by the Genesis Foundation for Harry Christophers and The Sixteen.
Choral At Cadogan 25-26: The Tallis Scholars Spem In Alium
Imagine the voice of heaven itself: music that belongs to eternity yet somehow always feels new. Thomas Tallis’ Spem in alium is a landmark of Renaissance music – a masterpiece that seems to create its own sense of time and space. For more than 50 years, The Tallis Scholars have been the world’s pre-eminent performers of Tallis’ music; this should be extraordinary. “In this acoustic, the famously rich textures were remarkably clear and this was the sort of performance where you could marvel again at Tallis’ remarkable dexterity and cleverness, yet the whole seemed effortless and magical.” Planet Hugill
The Mozartists: Ronald Brautigam Plays Mozart
Celebrated Dutch fortepianist Ronald Brautigam makes his eagerly awaited debut with Ian Page’s award-winning orchestra The Mozartists, performing two of Mozart’s delightful early piano concertos. The programme also includes Mozart’s popular Serenata notturna, scored for the unusual combination of strings and timpani, and the joyfully effervescent Divertimento in D major, K.251, allegedly composed as a 25th birthday present for Mozart’s sister. Ronald Brautigam is one of very few pianists to perform at the highest level on both modern and period instruments. A student of the legendary Rudolf Serkin, he has recorded all of Mozart’s concertos and sonatas, as well as those by Haydn and Beethoven. “What is consistently compelling about these performances is the way Brautigam and his instrument allow us to look under the bonnet of the music.” Gramophone 6.15pm: Pre-concert talk Conductor Ian Page discusses the evening’s repertoire (in the auditorium, free to ticket holders)

Paris After Dark: Cabaret Songs And Jazz From The 1930S To The 1950S
The Jazz Repertory Company presents a billet-doux à nos amis with its tribute to Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker and the joyous jazz of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt’s Quintette du Hot Club de France. Susan Black not only sounds like Piaf but looks like her too, and she’ll be recreating some of the greatest songs of Piaf’s extraordinary career – ‘Non, Je ne regrette rien’, ‘Milord’, ‘La foule’, ‘L’accordéoniste’, ‘Padam, Padam’ and her signature song, ‘La vie en rose’. The American singer and dancer Josephine Baker came to fame in 1920s Paris, where she was known as the ‘Black Pearl’, the ‘Bronze Venus’ and the ‘Creole Goddess’. Nicolle Rochelle performed the lead role in Looking for Josephine during its two-year run, playing to capacity crowds at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The music of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli is recreated by The Hot Club de Londres, a quintet featuring violinist Mike Piggott in the role of Grappelli and Nils Solberg, the leading UK specialist in Django-style guitar. The music they create is a charming blend of swing and beautifully melodic soloing that encapsulates Parisian 1930s’ sophistication and elegance.

Riopy

Riopy

4 Jun 2026 - 4 Jun 2026

Jean-Philippe Rio-Py, known to the world as RIOPY, is a pianist and multi-instrumentalist composer with over a billion streams, sold-out concerts across continents, collaborations with the likes of Lana Del Rey, and a catalogue of albums that have topped the classical charts. But beneath the numbers lies something far more human: a story of resilience, survival, and a man who has discovered sound as a vessel for healing. 2026 marks the release of RIOPY’s fifth album Be Love - an appeal born out of the artist’s awe-inspiring journey of rediscovery and defiance, and a refusal to let fear or illness silence him. “It’s called Be Love because that’s the only thing that matters. Be love. And if we all love, then everything is fine,” he says simply. Be Love will see RIOPY sing for the very first time on a release. The composer-instrumentalist has utilised numerous ways to produce sound, just never his own voice. “I had this compulsion, this need to use my voice, because I think it’s one of the biggest fears I’ve had through my life. But it’s something I really enjoy doing.” He shares, “I started just whispering... it’s not a new me, it’s just an expansion of what I do. It felt right, because I needed to do this.” Presented by Serious. 5+. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

To end the evening, the Orchestra performs Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Each movement, masterfully orchestrated by Ravel, depicts a different scene or portrait, ranging from a bustling market to the Great Gates of Kiev.

National Symphony Orchestra: Vaughan Williams, Mendelssohn And Elgar
Serving as the grand finale of the National Symphony Orchestra’s 2026 season, the performance is led by esteemed conductor Rimma Sushanskaya and features acclaimed violinist Mathilde Milwidsky as the evening’s soloist. It seems fitting that on this Remembrance Sunday, 2026, the National Symphony Orchestra’s concert series at the Cadogan Hall should conclude with a great English work intimately connected with this annual act of memorial, when those who laid down their lives in service for this country are remembered. Nimrod, the ninth of the 14 variations which comprise Sir Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, became a feature of the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in 1920, the year of its inauguration, and one could scarcely imagine any other piece of music which complements the solemnity and dignity of the occasion so perfectly. The programme opens with the pastoral beauty of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, an evocative arrangement that captures the essence of the English countryside.

Her music accepts the beauty of reality and a collective experience of belonging. For the listener, Wright’s songs embody a tradition that allows us to always feel at home. Wright culls inspiration from her Southern upbringing in Georgia where she was the musical director of a small church in which her father was the pastor. Gospel music, and the call and response singing with the church congregation, informed her first brushes with music while she would soon traverse the Great American Songbook on her path to an illustrious singing career. At the age of 22, Wright made a name for herself nationally as a vocalist with a touring concert tribute to Billie Holiday, where her poised performance stole the show. At 23, she signed with Verve Records for the release of Salt which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts. Her subsequent albums (Dreaming Wide Awake, The Orchard, Fellowship, Freedom & Surrender) continued to top the charts with her single ‘Lean In’ (from Freedom & Surrender) landing on President Obama’s 2016 summer playlist. Produced by Americana icon Joe Henry, Wright’s latest full-length studio recording, Grace, reveals the web of deep-running roots of story and song that bind together the vastly diverse traditions that are the soul of the American South. In 2022, Lizz Wright launched an independent record company, Blues & Greens Records, with the release of Holding Space, a brilliant live album capturing a concert in 2018 in Berlin. Wright’s label venture is designed to forge an innovative business model where artists are positioned to build sustainable and wholesome careers. After 20+ years of major and indie label contracts, Wright sees the imbalances of power and unfairnesses in artistic ownership. Blues & Greens Records creates a healthy ecosystem for Wright, and inspires her to imagine and develop offerings for emerging artists. Her debut release, Holding Space, becomes the first master recording she owns.

John Lewis Partnership Music Society - Brahms Deutsches Requiem
The John Lewis Partnership Music Society invites you to an intimate experience of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. They present the composer’s own “London Version,” featuring the exquisite four-hand piano accompaniment and our Voices in Partnership Choir. While the traditional orchestral performance is beloved for its grand scale, this unique version—crafted by Brahms for its 1871 London premiere—offers a different, chamber-like intimacy. The vast orchestral palette is replaced with the percussive clarity of a single piano played by two performers stripping away the dense textures, revealing the intricate beauty and transparency of the vocal lines. The result is a performance that emphasizes the work’s “human” core. Without the weight of a full orchestra, the delicate interplay of the choir and the nuances of the text shine through with newfound clarity, transforming this moving requiem into a dialogue of comfort and hope. Join them for this moving musical event.

Rpo: Beethoven 9

Rpo: Beethoven 9

22 Apr 2027 - 22 Apr 2027

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: a night of celebration, including the famous Ode to Joy. From tragic opening to climactic, world-embracing Ode to Joy, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony has never been just another symphony – it’s an emotional experience with the power to change lives. Every performance is a special occasion, but tonight at Cadogan Hall Conductor-in-Residence Adam Hickox and the RPO have joined forces with the City of London Choir and a truly superb line-up of solo singers. They’re setting the mood with two very different – but equally gripping – outpourings of emotion. Brahms revered Beethoven, and his poignant Nänie is a true cry from the soul. And Rossini’s William Tell Overture paints a whole world of wild Romantic adventure even before it gets to that famous finale – a gloriously entertaining salute to Beethoven’s anniversary year.
Rpo: Beethoven And Dvořák

Rpo: Beethoven And Dvořák

25 Feb 2027 - 25 Feb 2027

Pure sonic sunshine, as the inimitable Sunwook Kim conducts (and plays) Beethoven. ‘Thus fate knocks at the door’: even if you’ve never heard a Beethoven symphony, you’ll know the shattering four notes that open his Fifth. Enjoy Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony? Now discover his symphony from the old world! Dvořák simply couldn’t stop writing good tunes, and his Eighth Symphony begins with a hymn and ends with an all-out knees-up. In between, you’ll hear birdsong, thunder, village bands and graceful waltzes: this is folk music turned to symphonic gold, and it’s the perfect complement to Smetana’s joyous comedy overture. This is a concert that positively sparkles with sunlight – and masterpieces don’t get much sunnier than Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto, especially when played by Sunwook Kim, a pianist and conductor who sees far beyond the notes. Tonight, he directs Beethoven’s Concerto from the keyboard, just like the composer himself.

29 Apr 2027 - 29 Apr 2027

Liya Petrova plays Beethoven in a concert that buzzes with wit and drama. Expect the unexpected. The Soviet authorities wanted Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony to be a blockbuster epic, but instead they got a sardonic showstopper with a wicked sense of humour – music that entertains even while it subverts. No wonder they banned it! Beethoven’s Violin Concerto begins with a drum solo and a hymn from the woodwinds – it’s only later that it lays bare the poetic, singing soul of the violin. And Dobrinka Tabakova – a British composer with a knack for telling stories – takes her inspiration from bees, in a sparky, Ivor Novello Award-winning celebration of life. Delyana Lazarova conducted the world premiere of Swarm Fanfares, and she’ll make an inspirational partner to RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova as she soars free in Beethoven’s radiant Violin Concerto.
RPO: Brahms 1

RPO: Brahms 1

21 Oct 2026 - 21 Oct 2026

Drama, fantasy and something wholly new: music by Brahms, Debussy and Laurence Osborn. Brahms’ First Symphony begins with the beating of a heart in torment and ends with a hymn of triumph. Debussy’s Prélude à I’après-midi d’un faune is very different – as a soft, sultry flute opens the gateway to a dream-world of sensuous sound. Two huge imaginations; two unforgettable musical journeys, brought thrillingly to life by our inspirational guest conductor Ariane Matiakh, tonight making her RPO debut. But in between comes the most wonderful adventure of all, as superstar cellist Zlatomir Fung gives the world premiere of a magical new work by the innovative British composer Laurence Osborn. We haven’t heard it yet – no one has! But Laurence has taken his inspiration from the world after dark, in all its mystery and wonder. Be there when it comes to life.

‘A wondrous tone, an elegant straightforwardness and a freshness of utterance’ – that was how one critic described the playing of Johan Dalene, when he won the Nielsen International Violin Competition in 2019. We’re always delighted to welcome this young Swedish-Norwegian violinist back to London. This time, he’s playing one of the warmest and best-loved of all violin concertos; the big, songful centrepiece of a concert charged with Romanticism with a capital R. There’s a tempestuous overture from the neglected French genius Louise Farrenc. And then Alpesh Chauhan – a young British conductor with a flair for grand passions – dives into a symphony that’s both the stormiest and the most tender that Schumann ever wrote.
Rpo: Debussy, Saint-Saëns And Dukas
Love, moonlight and the wonders of Egypt: a sparkling French adventure with the RPO. They do things differently in France. A vision of moonbeams, transformed into shimmering poetry? A fairytale told in music so vivid that it went on to inspire Disney’s Fantasia? Or a piano concerto written on a Nile cruise, complete with the sunlight, the bustle and even the croaking frogs that Saint-Saëns experienced on his holiday in Egypt? It’s all here in this feast of musical fantasy à la Francaise, conducted by Alain Altinoglu, one of the brightest (and most inspiring) stars of the current French scene. The superb Polish-born pianist Lucas Krupinski stars in Saint-Saëns’ joyous ‘Egyptian’ Concerto, and Nora Gubisch sings Chausson’s ecstatic Poème: “The sea hurls itself into the sun’s great embrace / they kiss on soft sand, where rolling breakers shine…”

Piano passion, Hungarian style: Emilia Hoving conducts Bartók, Kodály and Liszt. “The forests, the cascading Danube, the wide, open fields… this is my homeland, this wild, untamed nation!” Franz Liszt never did anything by halves, and when he discovered the folk music of his native Hungary, his imagination caught fire. That passionate spirit blazes through this sizzling concert from RPO Associate Conductor Emilia Hoving, a celebration of untamed rhythms, endless longing and melodies that tingle like paprika. Zoltán Kodály tells the tallest of musical fairytales, and his friend Bartók toasts the foundation of the city of Budapest, throwing a chain of dances right across the Danube. But first, we’ll hear from Liszt himself – music by the greatest pianist who ever lived. No problem for our soloist, Hungarian pianist János Balázs: “I’m a real romantic,” he says. This concert is jointly presented by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cziffra Festival.

Rpo: Mozart Revealed

1 Oct 2026 - 1 Oct 2026

Get under the skin of Mozart’s last symphony, as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra retells the story of a masterwork. In 1788, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his last symphony. We’re still not quite sure how he did it: creating a masterpiece so perfect that for more than two centuries, it has shared a name with the king of the gods. But why is it considered to be a masterpiece? Here to answer that question (and more) are presenter Leah Broad, Vasily Petrenko (conducting the RPO for the first time at Cadogan Hall) and the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with an entertaining guide to what makes Mozart tick. They’ll take the Symphony apart and show you how it works. And then they’ll put it back together, concluding the evening with a full performance. Whether you’re a hardcore Mozart fan or a total newbie, it’s an experience that never fails to inspire. An entertaining one-hour exploration, featuring insights and a complete performance. This concert has no interval.
Rpo: Sibelius Violin Concerto

Rpo: Sibelius Violin Concerto

8 Oct 2026 - 8 Oct 2026

Vaughan Williams’ dreams of England, plus a gripping showcase for violinist Liya Petrova. In the darkest days of the Second World War, the 70-year-old Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a symphony that sounded like a vision of peace. From misty opening to visionary finish, the Fifth Symphony is Vaughan Williams doing what he does best: spacious, eloquent and rapturously beautiful. But it’s got drama, too, and this evening conductor Adam Hickox places it alongside two powerful and atmospheric 20th-century landscapes by Vaughan Williams’ contemporaries. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture is bold and defiant – the work of a woman who spoke with her own voice in communist Poland. And RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova explores the fire and ice of Sibelius’ mighty Violin Concerto: a gripping showcase for the ‘gorgeous sound’ (The Sunday Times) of this award-winning violinist.
Rpo: Tchaikovsky 2

Rpo: Tchaikovsky 2

24 Jun 2027 - 24 Jun 2027

Folksongs, fantasies and glorious Tchaikovsky from Kirill Karabits and violinist Liya Petrova. Genius enjoys a challenge. Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto begins with a chord that was supposed to be impossible, though with a violinist as brilliant as RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova (“exquisite”, The Guardian), the impossible comes as standard. It’s the elegant jewel at the centre of a concert filled with melodies close to the heart of Ukrainian guest conductor Kirill Karabits. Some are unfamiliar – like the glowing colours and lush harmonies of Angel, a rarely-heard (well, in Britain anyway) masterwork by the Ukrainian composer Fyodor Akimenko. But others have never been more popular, and for a good reason. Ukrainian folk tunes inspired Tchaikovsky’s colourful ‘Little Russian’ Symphony. But the emotion – and the magic – is entirely his own, and it’ll make you want to dance.

Rpo: Tchaikovsky Revealed

19 May 2027 - 19 May 2027

The RPO and presenter Leah Broad uncover the secrets of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. Few composers’ lives are more tangled up with their music than Tchaikovsky’s. His Fourth Symphony is practically an autobiography in sound: a no-holds-barred self-portrait of a composer wrestling with his demons and telling the tale in some of the most glorious sounds ever created for a full orchestra. Intrigued? Today, presenter Leah Broad, conductor Adam Hickox and the full RPO raise its bonnet and uncover its secrets – using anecdotes and live examples to explain the personal dramas and musical masterstrokes that make this one of the most thrilling (and popular) of great symphonies. If you know your Tchaikovsky, you might be surprised. And if you don’t, there’s no livelier way to get inside a masterpiece and discover what makes it tick. An entertaining one-hour exploration, featuring insights and a complete performance. This concert has no interval.
Rpo: Vasily Petrenko Conducts Beethoven 5
Beethoven’s Fifth: Vasily Petrenko and the RPO play the classic to end all classics. ‘Thus fate knocks at the door’: even if you’ve never heard a Beethoven symphony, you’ll know the shattering four notes that open his Fifth. But if that’s all you know, you’re in for the ride of your life, as Vasily Petrenko conducts the symphony that redefined classical music – a white-knuckle ride from despair to triumph, told in music so powerful that it left Beethoven’s contemporaries gasping for breath. Follow that? You can’t, so we’re beginning with a symphonic scene from Nadezhda Rimskaya-Korsakova, her last piece of composition before her marriage to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and a showstopper from the 20th century, the daredevil piano concerto that the young Prokofiev wrote in an age of revolution to demonstrate his own off-the-scale skills. And who better to play it than a good friend of the RPO – the ‘pristine, lyrical and intelligent’ (The New York Times) Jan Lisiecki?
