An evening with Katie Spencer at Cafe No9 (the first of two back to back shows)
Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer's landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer's music. The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70's folk and songwriter movements. Katie Spencer's widely celebrated new album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique songcraft, spellbinding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and unrushed, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. The inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive, taking in the world renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. As live music has returned to our world, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more, eyes closed, in the moment, performing. Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music. -Guitarist Magazine One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer songwriter collections Ive encountered in some time. -RnR Magazine Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician. -Record Collector A timeless English folk album, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning. -Shindig! Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and, to conjure a name we hear less often these days. -Bridget St John. Prog Magazine The way Katie plays is never contrived, showy or imitative; it sounds true ... a world class folk guitarist. -Roots Katie's guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar's strings and produces little tapestries of song. -Ralph McTell Please note this ticket price DOES include a BYOB fee should you wish to bring alcohol to the venue. Ida Wenøe and Samantha Whates

Ida Wenøe and Samantha Whates

22 Apr 2026 - 23 Apr 2026

When Ida Wenøe and Samantha Whates take the stage together, it's not your typical double headline show where one artist follows the other. Instead, they weave their performances into something far more collaborative and unexpected. The two songwriters combine their set lists into a seamless flow, often without revealing who wrote which song. This approach creates a narrative that goes beyond what either achieves alonean unfolding story that draws you in, song by song. Rather than stepping aside, they share the stage from start to finish, featuring on each other's songs with harmonies, instrumental layers, and a natural ease that comes from genuine connection, respect and long time friendship. Expect two full sets that are immersive, multi-instrumental, and brimming with warmth, love and laughter. One of the most striking aspects of their collaboration is how it defies the competitive edge often projected onto women in music. Here, you witness the opposite: two artists lifting each other up, creating space for their songs to breathe together, and celebrating what happens when voices, stories, and talents intertwine. This is a performance that's part concert, part conversation, and wholly uniquean evening where the joy of collaboration takes center stage. An evening with The Hot Seats at Cafe No9
Absolutely superb stunning musicians. If you get a chance to see them, take it. Very highly recommended. Bruce MacGregor, BBC Radio Scotland For 22 years, The Hot Seats, have gained and burnished the reputation as the carriers of an important and overlooked tradition of American and international folk music social commentator, satirist, and entertainer. The Skillet Lickers, The Hoosier Hot Shots, Woodie Guthrie, Gus Cannon, Uncle Dave Macon, Frank Zappa these are pools in which The Hot Seats swim. Formed in 2002 by a group of like-minded friends for a weekly bar gig, the band's live shows quickly became well known for on stage antics, one-act plays, and Dada-esque humor, underpinned by a foundation in hard-driving bluegrass, old time, ragtime, jug blues, and early country music. Between 2005-2018, The Hot Seats toured extensively in the US and UK, performing in nearly the full spectrum of venue size and situation: living room to dive bar; square dance to theater). Some of their festival highlights include: Tønder Festival, The Richmond Folk Festival, Red Wing Roots, Celtic Connections, The Shetland Folk Festival, The Orkney Folk Festival, South By Southwest, Floyd Fest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival, The Watermelon Park Festival, The Northeast Kingdom Music Festival, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, Maverick Festival, HebCeltFest, Speyfest, Leicester Summer Sundae and multiple occasions Edinburgh Festival Fringe (including winning a Herald Angel Award in 2006). Since 2020, the band's original core of Ben Belcher (banjo, bass, fiddle), Josh Bearman (mandolin, banjo, guitar) and Jake Sellers (percussion bass) have been joined by Rudy Bee (fiddle, tuba, accordion, piano), JM Nobile (mandolin, guitar), and Charles Arthur (banjo, fiddle, resophonic guitar). If you dont have a good time when the Hot Seats play, check your pulse. You might be dead. An Evening With Tim Dalling

An Evening With Tim Dalling

8 May 2026 - 8 May 2026

Ivor Cutler and the Shinytribe: A double bill of songs and stories performed by Tim Dalling. The first half: "Help I Think I'm Turning Into Ivor Cutler" Tim's tribute to the great folk-surrealist Ivor Cutler, hero of the Beatles (he was Buster Bloodvessel, the bus conductor in the Magical Mystery Tour) and John Peel (he was a regular doing sessions for Peel in the 70s and 80s). Beautiful, hilarious and weird songs performed as Ivor did accompanied with pedal-organ. The second half: "Songs of the Shinytribe" is a set of songs and stories, written and performed by Tim Dalling, accordionist, performer, songwriter and theatre-maker. His funky accordion and soulful voice have been likened to a cross between Randy Newman and Ivor Cutler. It is a celebration of birth, death, rituals, hares and dancing trees. Come along and be ready to laugh and cry. Please note this ticket price DOES include a BYOB fee should you wish to bring alcohol to the venue. An Evening With the Leisure Society at Cafe No9
The Leisure Society was founded by Nick Hemming, who grew up in Burton-on-Trent. Over the years, the band have received high praise for their oustanding songwriting and production craft, winning two Ivor-Novello nominations and Rough Trade Albums of the Year. As a teenager, Nick formed the indie band She Talks To Angels with his art college friend, director Shane Meadows plus the actor Paddy Considine. Following the band's split, Nick was scooped up by local indie hopes The Telescopes, who were signed to Creation Records. Shane Meadows remained a supporter, hiring Nick to score 1999's A Room For Romeo Brass and 2004's Dead Man's Shoes, but Nick was losing his confidence. Everything changed with the arrival of fellow Burton-on-Trent exile Christian Hardy, who worked with Nick to develop and record new songs and encouraged him to venture out on stage. The Leisure Society was born and developed rapidly, with an initial landmark being the single The Last Of The Melting Snow, which was championed by Dermot OLeary on Radio 2, and Radcliffe and Maconie, and Guy Garvey on 6Music. Theyve collaborated and toured with artists including Ray Davies, Brian Eno, Laura Marling, Neil Hannon, Richard Thompson, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott. An Evening With Adam Beattie And Fiona Bevan At Cafe No9
Adam Beattie's May 2024 Tour will promote the first single from his upcoming album Home Fires Burning. For this tour, songwriter/fingerstyle guitarist Beattie will be double headlining with multiplatinum Canadian-British singer-songwriter Fiona Bevan. Since meeting onstage in London, Beattie and Bevan have been singing in close harmony and accompanying each other on guitar, piano and double bass. Adam Beattie's new album is a homespun epic which explores family, legacy and an evolving relationship to his hometown of Inverurie, in the north east of Scotland. The songs are connected by a narrative that echoes the classic hero's journey of departure, adventure and the return home. With melodies inspired by the traditional fiddle tunes of his childhood, played on finger-picked acoustic guitar, we are cinematically transported to Scotland. Beattie invites us to get to know his Mum and Dad, and it makes us think about our own families. It's a very personal story with great universal appeal, reflecting on what really matters, delivered in Beattie's trademark timeless, lyrical, mesmerising sound. The tour will also celebrate the release of Fiona Bevan's first single from her upcoming EP First Woman On The Moon, a set of brand new songs exploring borders, hope, love, sex and femaleness against a political backdrop. The EP beckons us deeper into the cinematic dream-folk she created in her most recent record Girl With Telescope, "startling odysseys that suggest Joanna Newsom and Kate Bush spine-tinglingly joined" (The Guardian). An Evening With the Horsenecks at Cafe No9

Based in Astoria, Oregon, they are two multi-instrumentalists who have come together from traditional music backgrounds to found a sound that weaves through layers of influence that include early Appalachian fiddle and banjo music, country, classic bluegrass and original folk. Gabrielle's fiddle style is the result of being raised in the Old Time music hotbed of Portland, OR and being exposed to the fiddle traditions of the Southeast US through years of traveling to festivals and learning from some of the greatest players in the genre. Now deep in the world of songwriting, she brings together her background in traditional music and modern influences across many genres to create a catalog of songs that speak to their place in the evolving story of traditional music. Barry's banjo and guitar playing range from thrilling and high-octane to moody and captivating, and his versatility shines whether flatpicking, playing clawhammer, or driving three-finger banjo. Barry has been consistently active in his home town of Liverpool's music scene for over 20 years, playing lead guitar with cult heroes Tramp Attack and in the UK Old Time and Bluegrass scene, playing with multiple groups. Together, they create a distinctive sound, rooted in tradition but deeply personal, their powerful harmony singing front and center. An Evening With Hannah Scott at Cafe No9
Your music moved me to tears. This is the refrain contemporary folk artist Hannah Scott regularly hears as she leaves the stage. The best stories make us feel deeply and in the 15 years she has been writing and performing, Hannah has become an exceptional storyteller. Her music is shaped by human connections, with family, in all its chaos and glory, sitting at the heart of her work. Her lyrics are powerful and poignant, and her voice feels strangely familiar, though you cant quite put your finger on why. Her writing may be deeply personal but her music has a universal appeal that goes beyond the melodies you catch yourself humming in the days after listening to her songs. The connection she builds with her audiences is most evident in the stories shared after her performances: the woman whose elderly mother lost a sibling in childhood and is moved to tears by Boy In The Frame; the young father who, upon hearing My Dad & I, realises he wants to spend more time with his small children; the adoptive parents who, like Hannah as a step-parent, may not have been the first person to hold their child, but Love You Like I Did. A deep-rooted desire for this connection has always been the driving force behind her songwriting and live performances. Born in Suffolk and raised by an artist mother and an eccentric entertainer father, with music going back three generations to her songwriting great-grandmother, creativity was always destined to be an integral part of Hannah's life. At the age of four, her father bought a second-hand piano for £70 from a friend in the pub and she didnt look back, falling in love with both playing and listening to classical music. Picking up a guitar in her early teens as the influence of her peers and more contemporary music took hold, Hannah taught herself some simple chords that would lay the foundation for her earliest attempts at songwriting. Hannah's career highlights include having her song No Gravity featured on the hit international TV series Grey's Anatomy, recording a live session on BBC Radio 2 with Dermot OLeary and opening for Madeleine Peyroux, performing to an audience of two thousand. She has also shared the stage with folk luminaries such as Seth Lakeman, Cara Dillon and Fairport Convention and has performed at festivals including Cambridge, Sidmouth and Manchester Folk. Equally at home in small venues, she thrives on the intimacy of performing in spaces where she can look audience members in the eye, and, of course, speak with them after the show. Hannah is set to release her new EP, Threads, a follow-up to the widely praised 2024 album Absence Of Doubt. It marks the first release she has both written and produced, working alongside acclaimed engineer Adrian Hall (Tori Amos, Anna Calvi). Inspired by family, nostalgia, grief, and a desire to change the rental market for the better, these songs embody an unwavering yearning for life, even in its darkest moments. Im sorry, but also not sorry, Hannah replies to the audience member moved to tears, so pleased her songs have connected in just the way she hoped they would. She reduces women and children to tears - in a good way... - The Guardian Wonderful songwriting. - Seth Lakeman She screams class but in the quietest way possible. - Folking.com Please note this ticket price DOES include a BYOB fee should you wish to bring alcohol to the venue. An Evening With Sarah Jane Scouten at Cafe No9
An agile voice, ruminative songwriting, and love for classic country, indie pop, and everything in between. American Songwriter In March 2020, Canadian folk & country artist Sarah Jane Scouten was living in rural Scotland. With tours cancelled, days stretched endlessly, punctuated only by the steady unfolding of Scottish springtime, leaf by leaf, petal by petal. Growing up on the west coast of Canada, to her the flora of Dumfries and Galloway was a pageant of scent and colour, altogether new but still strangely familiar. This is where Sarah Jane was initiated into herbal medicine hawthorn, valerian, yarrow. The plants subtle power drew her onto an unexpected path. In May 2020 she applied to a professional programme in herbal medicine in the UK. Training in an entirely different field gave her perspective and space from a career in music which demands everything. It renewed Sarah Jane's love of live performance, which had been diminished by life on the road. Studying herbs, and just as importantly people, gave her music a deeper dimension and she began to write again. Now for the first time this decade, she is releasing new music. Sarah Jane Scouten's fifth album Turned to Gold (Light Organ Records) is a road trip album, drawing on Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Christine McVie. Opening up the record, Wanderlust is a highway dream. Wilder When I Was With You, with its irresistible chorus, was co-written with Samantha Parton (BeGood Tanyas). Rose and Carnations is a tribute to John Prine and The Great Unknown reveals a family experience of medical assistance in dying (MAID). For the title track Turned to Gold, Sarah Jane revisits the impact of the sudden loss of her biological mother, exploring the theme of alchemical transmutation. Made in a heatwave in Vancouver, she collaborated with producer Johnny Payne (The Shilohs), Matt Kelly on keys and guitars (City and Colour), Leon Power on drums (Frazey Ford) and James McEleney on bass (Andrew Collins Trio). Sarah Jane Scouten has been nominated for 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award and an International Folk Music Award. She has performed at Vancouver Folk Music Festival, MerleFest, Calgary Folk Music Festival, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues, Dranouter Festival, Maverick Americana Music Festival and more. She has opened for Corb Lund, William Prince, Ron Sexsmith, The Sadies and shared the stage with Martha Wainwright, The Strumbellas, Allison Russell, Martin Carthy, Mandolin Orange (Watchhouse) and more. An Evening With the Ruth Eliza Trio at Cafe No9
Ruth Eliza, Matthew Ord and Tom Kimber (banjo, guitar and mandolin). Ruth Eliza is a clawhammer banjo player and singer-songwriter based in Lancaster, UK. She joins forces with Matthew Ord, guitarist (Assembly Lane, Cloth-Eared Mule), to put together the arrangements, plus mandolinist Tom Kimber (Assembly Lane, Pons Aelius), Swedish fiddler Adam Bülow (Bülow's Kvartett, New Valley String Band) and double bass player Eleanor Wilkie (Midnight Skyracer, Sapphire Storm, Charlotte Carrivick Band). An Evening With Chris Murphy & Friends at Cafe No9
Record release show for the " LIVE IN ENGLAND " album (Recorded at the Dorothy Pax ). In another era, I would have played square dances, been a court musician, or a circus fiddler, and loved every minute of it, says veteran LA violinist and songwriter Chris Murphy, whose spirited and haunting original music bends genres and even centuries with ease. Murphy grew up in an Irish-Italian family near New York City, surrounded by the disparate sounds of his neighbors traditional music: Italian mandolin songs, pulsing Latin rhythms, and bracing Irish rounds. Eventually falling under the spell of late, great multi-instrumentalist David Lindley (Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan) Murphy went on to explore Turkish and Indian music at Bard College, and studied composition at Boston's prestigious New England Conservatory of Music. Since then, Murphy has hypnotized crowds in more than forty US states, done extensive tours of England, Belgium , and The Netherlands, and amassed a breathtakingly deep catalog of over 500 works. His over fifteen original albumsincluding 2023's brilliant The Road & the Starsboast A-list players from the Tom Waits band, Wilco, X, The Desert Rose Band, Elvis Costello, and the Buena Vista Social Club. To me, music is liquid, Murphy explains thoughtfully. Ill twist and turn, and hammer and mold, and shape, cut, and paste the music to create a fresh experience for my audience at all costs. Both a wily , charismatic performer and a fire-breathing virtuoso of the violin, Chris Murphy crams more musical mileage into a short set than most players do in an entire tour. Whether it's through noirish atmospheres, joyfully bent traditional folk tunes, or belly-up to-the-bar Blues , Murphy does the devil's handiwork on four strings with a winning presence and a gypsy's knack for crossing all musical terrains James Rotondi Editor-In-Chief FUTURE MUSIC MAGAZINE "Spellbinding, charismatic performances." Their playing is nuanced as an ensemble and as soloists, rising wraithlike up through the music. Songlines The vibrant trio bring their multi-instrumental talents to an impressive collection of mostly original material that is an absolute blast to listen to. One of my top favourites of the year... Brilliant. RnR ★★★★ GAVIN FAIRHALL LEVER's ecstatic and adventurous music is a giddy series of tone poems; the sizzling, smoking fiddle and the insistent, questing guitar dart wild and free over a solid anchor of the double bass...razor-sharp composing and surefire musical virtuosity. An Evening With Jaimee Harris at Cafe No9
Jaimee Harris turned 30 during the pandemic. It's a milestone that is a rite of passage even during normal times. But for this Texas-born singer-songwriter, it came in the midst of one of the strangest and most tumultuous periods in American history. When the world stopped during lockdown, Harris, like many others, found herself gazing back into the past, ruminating on the nature of her hometown and family origins, and reckoning with their imprint on her. The term nostalgia derives from the Greek words nostos (return) and algos (pain), and if Harris's Boomerang Town can be regarded as a nostalgic album, it is only nostalgic in the sense that the longing for home is a desire to return to the past and heal old wounds. As well as their stunning vocals, both are self-taught musicians; Zoe plays piano and Mila the acoustic guitar. An Evening With Amit Dattani & Chris Cleverley
For one special Solstice evening this June, Contemporary folk songwriters Amit Dattani and Chris Cleverley bring a rare, collaborative live show to the iconic Cafe #9, for a showcase of dexterous fingerstyle guitar and healing, meditative songwriting to soothe the frayed edges of this fractured modern world. Amit Dattani Folk, blues and Americana singer-songwriter Amit Dattani has garnered attention from the likes of BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Americana UK and fRoots, with his nimble fingerpicking and striking lyrical originality. Named in Best Gigs of 2023 by Tradfolk, Amit's raconteur spirit and superb musicianship has garnered a strong reputation on the live circuit, with over twenty years performing across the UK and Europe under his belt. His musicianship, lyricism and fiercely defiant spirit come to the fore on his most recent release Wrong Kind of One. Set against the backdrop of a debilitating health condition, this collection of songs captures resilience and hope in equal measure, earning plaudits and recognition for its honesty, warmth and craft. Chris Cleverley Chris Cleverley was born under a solstice moon, in the honeysuckle mysticism of a late 80s Midsummer, where the symbolic sounds of Hunky Dory, Graceland and Ladies of The Canyon echoed from the woodchip walls of the South Birmingham terrace where he was raised; quiet and curious, saturnine and shy. Here, the soul of a young artist was shaped. Three decades on and his unique brand of dreamy, psychedelic folk has taken him from the columns and airwaves of The Telegraph, Sunday Times and BBC 6 Music, to the world-renowned stages of Cambridge Folk Festival & the English Folk Expo, twice earning him FATEA Magazine's Male Artist of the Year Award. Come bask in the intricate fingerstyle and lush ambient soundscapes of this true guitar-man, inspired by the Lo-fi American Greats, Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens & Phoebe Bridgers; A curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of the 90s Pacific Northwest. An Evening With Pavey Ark at Cafe No9

30 Oct 2026 - 30 Oct 2026

Pavey Ark are cinematic indie-folk band from East Yorkshire. Atmospheric vocals, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful orchestral-folk sound that evades immediate comparison. Upon further listening, the band's wide range of influences start to reveal themselves from the laid back 60s and 70s sound of Jackson C. Frank, Rodriguez and Love through to more modern comparisons like, Nick Drake, Andrew Bird, Radiohead and Laura Marling. Known for their sublime live shows, Pavey Ark played at SXSW Texas 2025, the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage 2022 and closed Cambridge Folk Festival (Stage 3) in 2023 huge achievements for an independent act. The band have also supported This Is The Kit, Badly Drawn Boy, Willy Mason and Billie Marten. Captured in a make-shift studio in a converted farm building near Hull. The changing seasons and landscape on the working farm weaving its way into the fabric of the album. The backbone of the album was mixed by Paul Butler, frontman of English indie band The Bees. Now based in Los Angeles Paul has produced albums for Michael Kiwanuka, Andrew Bird and Teskey Brothers. Pavey Ark also worked with composer and producer Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) who led the live string quartet studio session and co-produced and mixed three songs on the new album. There's something about Marty OReilly's music that feels like it's always been herelike an old story being told in a new way. His voice is raw and real, his guitar playing gritty and soulful. It's music that doesnt try to be anything other than honest, and that's exactly why it hits so hard. He pulls inspiration from the roots of Americana; his sound references folk greats like Woody Guthrie, blues legends like Howlin Wolf, gospel pioneers like Sister Rosetta Thorpe, and master storytellers like Tom Waits. An Evening With Rob Heron & Conrad Bird at Cafe No9
Rob Heron has been touring the world with his band The Tea Pad Orchestra for the past 15 years, throwing flavours of classic country, gypsy-swing, rhythm & blues, and rockabilly into his original songs. Originally from the Lake District, but based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, he is well-known for his live performances, and dry humour on stage. He and his band have toured with big-name Americana outfits such as Pokey LaFarge, The Dead South, and Sierra Ferrell. 2026 sees Rob recording his first 'solo record since 2008, delving deeper into that lonesome country sound, yodelling cowboy songs, and more intimate song-writing. Conrad Bird is a rambling rover from North Yorkshire, and after over a decade of fronting the very popular festival act, Holy Moly & The Crackers, he is finally taking it back to the roots, with a brand-new solo EP of poetic folk songs, and Dylan-inspired balladeering. His gravelly voice and his on-stage story-telling result in a very charming stage show. Together, the Cumbrian cowboy, and the Yorkshire rover are heading off on a country-wide tour, both promoting their new solo releases, and briefly taking a step back from the wild rock & roll circus! An Evening With John “Papa” Gros at Cafe No9
John Papa Gros (pronounced Grow) is a New Orleans pianist, organist and singer-songwriter whose career reflects the city itselfresilient, rhythmic, steeped in tradition, and always evolving. For more than thirty years, Gros has served as both a keeper and a translator of New Orleans music, blending funk, R&B, jazz, blues, rock, and Americana into a sound that is deeply rooted yet forward-looking. Born in New Orleans, Gros embodies his hometown's culture and deeply rooted traditions, absorbing its music and spirit. He began playing piano and French horn at age eleven and attended Loyola University in uptown New Orleans, graduating with a degree in French horn performance. While his formal training provided discipline and technique, Gros real education came from the school of hard knocks in the clubs and on the streetslearning the language of groove, feel, and restraint from the musical elders who had built the city's sound. That apprenticeship took shape in the 90's, when Gros evolved into a first-call sideman for some of New Orleans most revered artists. His tenure with George Porter Jr.'s Runnin Pardners placed him in direct lineage with The Meters and the architects of New Orleans funk, while tours with Snooks Eaglin, Earl King, Better Than Ezra, Anders Osborne, Irma Thomas and others sharpened his musical instincts and sense of purpose. These years cemented Gros not just as a formidable keyboardist, but as a musician entrusted with carrying cultural weight. Gros keyboard style, equal parts Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Art Neville and Randy Newman, follows in the great New Orleans piano tradition while forging a modern and innovative style and sound, placing him in direct lineage with and a torchbearer for the next generation of New Orleans greats. In 2000, Gros formed Papa Grows Funk, a band that would become synonymous with modern New Orleans funk. Anchored by a legendary twelve-year Monday night residency at the fabled Maple Leaf Bar, PGF fused deep funk grooves with jazz spontaneity and unfiltered live energy. Papa Grows Funk released six studio and live albums, including Needle in the Groove, co-produced by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, toured extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad, building a devoted following before disbanding in 2013, all documented in the independent documentary film, Do U Want It After Papa Grows Funk ended its run, Gros returned to sideman work, contributing to high-profile tributes honoring Dr. John and the Neville Brothers. The 2014 Music Mojo of Dr. John concertlater released as a live albumfeatured Gros alongside Bruce Springsteen, Mavis Staples, Jason Isbell, and John Fogerty, and allowed him to perform with both Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, two of his most influential mentors. The widespread devastation and social upheaval of Hurricane Katrina reshaped Gros purpose, deepening his commitment to telling New Orleans story through music. That sense of responsibility carried forward into his solo work, beginning with Day's End (2004), followed by River's On Fire (2016), a bold statement of artistic independence and maturity. In 2020, Gros released Central City, a joyful, intergenerational celebration of New Orleans songcraft featuring an all-star cast of local icons and collaborators. Gros music has also reached wide audiences beyond the stage. His performances and compositions have appeared in HBO's Treme, NCIS: New Orleans, The Judge, and C.L.A.W.S., reinforcing his role as an authentic musical voice of the city. His songs have additionally been broadcast during Major League Baseball Championship games and NBA playoff broadcasts, placing the New Orleans funk tradition on some of the largest stages in American sports media. The years that followed tested Gros yet again. During the pandemic, he forged new connections with listeners through weekly livestreams. In 2022, Hurricane Ida destroyed his family home and rehearsal space, prompting another long rebuilding process. From that upheaval emerged Silent S Recording Studio, where Gros slowly and deliberately recorded his most inspired project to date. That project, Giants (2026), is a groove-driven tribute to the artists who shaped Gros musical DNAAllen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Meters, Levon Helm, and Billy Preston. Recorded live in New Orleans with support from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Threadhead Cultural Foundation, the album captures songs refined through years of performance and delivered with equal parts reverence and risk. Today, John Papa Gros stands as a bridge between generations: a masterful keyboardist, seasoned songwriter, and powerful live performer who honors the past by making it move in the nowloudly, joyfully, and in real time.
