Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Kōenji Hyakkei £25 (inc. fees) - Cafe Oto - 31st May Line up Tatsuya Yoshida : drums Taku Yabuki : keyboards Ryo Fukuda : bass Kei Koganemaru : guitar Keiko Komori : soprano sax AH : vocal Koenji Hyakkei is a Japanese Zeuhl band formed by Yoshida Tatsuya (of the renowned drum and bass duo Ruins.) and Kubota Aki (the first singer who passed away last year) in 1991. In the early period of the band activity, they took over the musicality of Kubota's predecessor band MALINCONIA, and aimed for fusion of Kubota's operatic voice and punk rock. By the time they released the first album in 1994, the band got progressive rock color stronger, becoming a Magma like sound as saying to put a threatening chorus on the irregular beat unison. The language of the lyrics is a coined word, which is also greatly influenced by European languages such as Magma's Kobaian, Italian and German. However, Yoshida's lyrics have no meaning, only emphasis on the sound of words. on their album Angherr Shisspa in 2005, they have replaced the guitar player to soprano sax. With this change in instrumentation, their style has veered into a new direction to match the change in tone color, shift to Chamber Rock or Rock in Opposition style, also elements of jazz included.Through their evolution of style, their rhythmic and formal complexity have expanded greatly, incorporating polyrhythms, asymmetrical time signatures, as well as more complex and varied sections, often containing polyphony and counterpoint. in this period band has been played in world wide Prog Festival such as FIMAV (2007) Nearfest (2008) Gouveia art Rock (2008) Rock In Opposition (2009). After a couple of years the suspension of the activity, the band resumed activities with a new guitarist. on 2018 they released the studio album for the first time in 13 years. Touring Europe with a new bassist for the first time in six years since 2019. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. All ages

Sealionwoman, is vocalist Kitty Whitelaw and double bass player Tye McGivern. Together they craft a unique and defiantly uncategorisable sound. In late 2018 Sealionwoman released their first album "Siren" under Antigen Records. This debut album explored the haunting myth of the selkie. Their latest work, "Nothing Will Grow In The Soil," shifts to a heavier sound and focuses on another ancient and mystical subject, the ancient Yew tree. This upcoming album, set to be released in September 2024 with State 51, promises to delve into the rich ancient lore surrounding the Yew tree, continuing Sealionwoman's tradition of blending folklore with deeply atmospheric music.
Jackie-o Motherfucker - 2 Day Pass

Jackie-o Motherfucker - 2 Day Pass

25 Aug 2025 - 25 Aug 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Jackie-O Motherfucker - 2 day residency - 2 day pass Jackie-O Motherfucker was founded by Tom Greenwood in the mid 90’s, the group has had more than forty members over the years drawn from the U.S. experimental scene, notably Natalie Mering, who now records under Weyes Blood, briefly on bass. The current line up is a 4 piece lead by Tom Greenwood. Jackie-O Motherfucker's music draws from a variety of subgenres including various folk musics of the world, drone, free jazz, psychedelia, noise rock and space rock, and is heavily improvisational in its nature. The group has had recordings released by many different labels including Fire Records, Ecstatic Peace, Feeding Tube Records, ATP Recordings and their own U-Sound Archive and has been on several international tours, including several performances at All Tomorrow's Parties Festivals by way of Sonic Youth. The band played the 2002 and 2004 festivals curated by Sonic Youth and the 2007 festival curated by Thurston Moore. Tom Greenwood bio by Byron Coley: Born in 1966, a child of the high Dakota plains, Tom Greenwood showed intermedia tendencies early on. While in high school he divided his time between visual arts (winning a scholarship from Kodak for his photographic work) and sonic arts (playing “Purple Haze” at biker rallies). He bounced around art schools of the frozen north, before ending up on the streets of Minneapolis, where he took his degree in Media Arts. After spending the end of the 80s immersed in the aesthetic milieu of rural scum rock, creating the splendid Project A-Bomb record label in the process, Greenwood drifted into the open bowels of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Tom found work as an art director and participated in the Maynard Monroe-curated group show, URBAN ANALYSIS (with Nan Goldin, Rene Ricard, Lady Pink, a.o.) Greenwood ended up in Portland, Oregon in the mid 90s, where he headbirthed the seriously disturbed musical project that continues to this day - Jackie O Motherfucker. An extraordinarily mutable feast, Jackie O’s music encompasses everything from industrial ho-hum to acid-volk readymades, and has included hundreds of participants over its lifespan. Under the influence of mysterious Northwest bohemians (often associated to some degree with the Holy Modal Rounders), Greenwood studied how to spin garbage into garlands. This technique proved invaluable when he drifted back to NYC, where he connected with Thurston Moore, who encouraged his conceptual moves. In the 21st Century, Greenwood has created dual vistas of strangeness, all of them whistling like the rings around the o-mind. The musical projects - Jackie O, the U SOUND series, various shows and galleries - have blended into the visual ones, and splattered in a million unexpected directions. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. 3 Aug 2025 - 3 Aug 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Selvhenter - 2 Day Residency 2 day pass £36 (inc. fees) - Cafe Oto - 4th August 2025 Going past musical genres and instead straight towards something more elemental - Selvhenter’s music creates a strikingly direct, physical experience of sound composed of polyrhythms, acoustic and electric melodies, heavy music and improvised beauty. Since forming in Copenhagen in 2010, drummers Jaleh Negari and Anja Jacobsen, saxophonist Sonja LaBianca and trombonist Maria Bertel have forged a unique approach to making music that starts with their instrumental setup: two drummers that interlock as frequently as they go their own way, a trombone put through a bass amplifier loud enough to rattle your chest and a saxophone put through a range of effects so that it often sounds unrecognisable. Selvhenter work within their own idiom, drawing from the individual players’ personalities and interests to make a highly collective music, where all four musicians are absorbed into a total sound where an improvised free jazz approach collides with experimental electronic music and avant-garde noise/post-punk sonorities. Their new LP Mesmerizer - which marks their first physical album release in nearly a decade and their debut on the French label Hands in the Dark - carries forward this process of exploration, deploying original and complex patterns of rhythm through various percussive instruments and finely textured horns and synths. The attention to sonic details is also almost pushed to an extreme on this new offering, making the open auditory adventure suggested by the title of the album all the more captivating. These creative developments have brilliantly kept Selvhenter’s music alive to new uncharted moods and possibilities, while at the same time strengthening their core elements: a propulsive, dense and often ecstatic music. The Utopia Strong + Andrew Liles

The Utopia Strong + Andrew Liles

16 Oct 2025 - 16 Oct 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: The Utopia Strong + Andrew Liles £20 - Cafe Oto - 16th October 2025 Call it synchronicity, call it happenstance, call it no more than three friends getting together to give their speakers a workout. Yet The Utopia Strong’s formidable conflagration of psychedelic radiance and beatific harmony has evolved way beyond all or any expectations since the band’s inception.. ‘International Treasure’ chronicles the collaborative collision of Steve Davis, Kavus Torabi and Mike York heading into unchartered psychic territory, seemingly with nothing but their instincts as co-ordinates. What’s resulted is a step beyond anything either band or audience might have expected - a deeply rewarding voyage into inner space which moves into darker and still more evocative sound-worlds whilst remaining fundamentally off the map. Influences know no bounds in this context, and the listener would be forgiven for locating the atmospheres and soundscapes of this album on some sonic promontory above and between the potent abstractions of Tim Hecker, the improvisatory excursions of The Necks, and the gothic allure of Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore. ‘International Treasure’’ is the next chapter in a story which only grows more rewarding with every stop along the way - one in which three heads travel together deeper into their own musical journeys, and the resulting alchemical power transmutes its origins into gold. As no less a sage than Andrew Weatherall proclaimed, The Utopia Strong are “gnostic sonics in a nutshell”. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. All ages
