The List

Caird Hall

Caird Hall is located in a square in the middle of Dundee, a site that was occupied in Medieval times by St Clements church and graveyard and, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, The Vault, a mass of closes and tenements. In 1914 the building of the hall as we know it began, after King George V and Queen Mary laid the foundation stone. Shortly after, due to the war, building ceased, but the hall was completed in 1923. Since then, all sorts have appeared on stage, from -- in early years -- Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Dame Nellie Melba, to -- more recently -- Billy Connolly, Elton John and Paul Weller. Caird Hall is easily navigable by foot from the city centre and all local buses stop nearby. Dundee Taybridge station is a five minute walk away and, if driving, the hall is accessible via Castle Street or Crichton Street once in the town centre.
