Three brave little Viking girls save the day in this bold and funny adventure story for little rebels, by the creator of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Little Red and I Can Catch a Monster, Bethan Woollvin. Once upon a time in a Viking village, everything seems to be going wrong. Chickens are disappearing, trees are falling down, and there's lots and lots of crashing and bashing. The silly Chieftain won't listen to the three littlest Vikings, but can they work together to figure out what's going on and save the day? Three Little Vikings is all about cooperation, bravery, and getting your voice heard!

Marching On-Line Together: A History of the Leeds United Email List
Claire Warwick and John Boocock discuss the origins and history of the Unofficial Leeds United Email List and football supporters in Cyberspace. The Leeds List claims to be the oldest surviving football supporters email list in the UK. Starting life on Internet Relay Chat in the early 1990s, the 'List' parallels the democratisation and development (or otherwise) of the internet. Claire and John will tell the tale of a community of football supporters coming together using the internet over three decades. Initially mainly inhabited by techies and academics, the List soon became the on-line home to Leeds United Supporters from all walks of life, spread right across the World. Claire and John will also compare the 'List' to the emergence of other social networks and point out some rather striking cultural differences. Fan-led media occupies a unique space in the world of football, from a handful of photocopied fanzines sold outside football grounds in the 70s, to the global reach of todays multimedia platforms. Join the British Library and Leeds Libraries to explore fan-driven publishing in the present moment, including its role in the wider media landscape, what it offers audiences, why its important and how it has endured despite changes in the globalised game. The event features writers and editors from significant outlets including Daniel Chapman of Leedsista and formerly The Square Ball , Mike Harrison from The City Gent , Felicia Pennant from SEASON Zine and Zo Hitchen from Girlfans . The discussion will be chaired by Ffion Thomas, Deputy Editor of When Saturday Comes and co-editor of Along Come Norwich zine. Caryl Phillips: Writing about being a Football Fan
Renowned novelist Caryl Phillips spent his childhood in Leeds and remains a committed Leeds United fan. While known around the world for his powerful fiction, hes also frequently written about being a football fan, including the complexities of being a Black fan of Leeds United in the 1960s and 70s. As part of the Voice of the Fans exhibition, in conversation with Professor Andrew Warnes, Phillips discusses his experience as a fan, of writing about football and what Leeds United means to the city he grew up in. Football Heritage and Fandom: A Research Showcase
This panel event brings together experts on football heritage and fan culture, including Professor Richard Haynes (The Football Imagination), PhD researchers Cameron Huggett and Aurlien Gerard, and curator Dora Petherbridge. Topics will include the rise of football fanzines, solidarity movements in the 1980s, and Andrew Watsons XIan all-star fantasy team of Black footballers and footballers of colour in Scotland, developed through a National Library of Scotland project celebrating footballs roots, culture, heritage, and communities Part of Voice of the Fans, an exhibition co-produced by the British Library and Leeds Libraries, which explores over 60 years of fan-made media from their collections that has defined the beautiful game. Family History Consultation

If you are having difficulty with your family history research then join our team of family history librarians at the Central Library for a free consultation: from first steps using Ancestry to more advanced queries, we're on hand to help. We can primarily assist with family history in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area; the consultation is open to anyone, however, as we may be able to offer general advice depending on your circumstances. Please book one 30-minute slot - we may be able to see you for longer than 30-minutes depending on customer demand on the day, but the session may have to end at the end of the period if we have other bookings. You can book another session on another date if you think you will need extra assistance. You only need to book once ticket per enquiry - i.e. if you are coming with another family member and both have the same question please only book one ticket. The consultation will take place on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library in the Local and Family History department. If you are unable to attend in-person but still require a consultation, please call our department on 0113 37 86982 and ask to speak to a Librarian.
Botanical Art - Watercolour Lilies with Artist Monair Hyman
Gently and expertly guided by Monair, you will be observing from life and the examples in Art Library books and Special Collections to produce botanical drawings. You will learn colour mixing and transfer all your ideas to a final piece using Winsor and Newton watercolour paints. All materials are included, and the paint palette will be yours to take home. Biography Monair Hyman is a British contemporary painter. She graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University gaining a BA in Fine Art Painting 1st class Honours and a B.ED in Educational Management (Arts). Her work has been shown nationally and internationally. Monair Hymans work is in a number of private and public collections in Britain, Australia, France, Germany, Holland, Norway, Spain and the USA. Monair's research explores personal narratives, historical archives and the possibilities of tracing absence through the lens of pattern and decoration, informed by her early childhood, Caribbean heritage and the impact of Colonialism.
Freedom4Girls - Reusable Pad Sewing Workshops
Learn sewing machine skills to make your own pad and make pads to support women here and overseas. Drop in session. During these sessions we are sewing reusable, washable period packs that will be distributed in Kenya alongside quality menstrual health education. We welcome all sewing abilities to get involved with the workshops. They are a fun, relaxing and productive way to spend an afternoon. Freedom4Girls work to support those who menstruate by challenging the stigmas, taboos and gender inequalities associated with menstruation. We do this by providing education, providing period products, promoting product choice and supporting environmentally and financially sustainable options. Suitable for ages 14+
Drawing with Thread - Hand Embroidery and Applique Workshop  With Hayley Mills-Styles
In this day class you will learn how to create a design from a photograph (of a landscape, or portrait) and bring it to life using fabric and thread. Hayley will guide you through the basics of tracing a design, and transferring this onto to fabric ready to stitch using a variety of threads with some raw edge applique to add colour and texture. You will also learn some simple hand embroidery stitches that create your embroidered picture including stem stitch, French knots and satin stitch. All materials and equipment are included in the ticket price and the workshop is suitable for people with some embroidery experience who would like to start creating their own designs. You will need to bring a printed photograph to the workshop to create your design. Tickets are 24 which includes hot drinks There will be a short break for lunch. Please bring something or money for the Caf / sandwich shop.
Paper, Collage and Stitch Textile Workshop  With Hayley Mills-Styles
In this day class you will learn how to create a mixed media piece of textile art using paper, collage and unusual materials to create your own embellishments. Hayley will guide you through creating a textured paper collage ready to embellish with hand and machine embroidery as well as unusual materials like plastic and metal. You will learn how to combine these nontraditional materials to make your piece as well as using hand and machine embroidery to enhance your design. All materials and equipment are included in the ticket price and the workshop is suitable for people with no embroidery experience or people who would like to try something new Tickets are 25 which includes hot drinks There will be a short break for lunch. Celebrating Pride Month, we have a fabulous Poetry workshop where you can contribute your work to the Zine Library. Find out about the history of queer poetry and be inspired to create your own! Music and football have a long and enduring connection, whether its fans taking inspiration from chart-topping singles to create terrace chants or indie bands creating world cup anthems and sponsoring non-league clubs. This event will explore how the earliest football fanzines took inspiration from the punk movement and developed into a scene that saw football become woven into music, magazines, fashion and wider culture. The event will feature: lead singer of The Farm and founder of the influential zine The End, Peter Hooton; author of Zerox Machine: Punk, Post-Punk and Fanzines in Britain, 197688, Matt Worley; Alternative Wales zine contributor and Welsh Music Podcast co-host, James Cuff; and academic Alice Hoole, whose work examines participation in subcultural football spaces. These Are My Rocks with Bethan Woollvin
Do you collect anything? Everyone collects something! Join award-winning author/illustrator Bethan Woollvin for an exciting workshop based on her brand-new picture book These Are My Rocks , which is all about the joy of collecting things. Bethan will kick off the session with an introduction and an interactive talk about strange collections and oddities from around the world. Bethan will also be reading These Are My Rocks , and give a short behind-the-scenes talk on her creative process. This will be followed by an exciting craft activity, where the audience will get the opportunity to bring a collection of their very own to life, which will be part of a 3-week exhibition at the library. Dragon School with Cressida Cowell - Author Event
Join multi-million-copy selling, award-winning author Cressida Cowell to celebrate the launch of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON SCHOOL, her first (hilarious) novel in the Dragon world for 10 years. Its an exciting year for Dragons, with a new live action film coming out in June: Cressida will talk about her inspiration and give writing and drawing tips; her events are energetic, inspiring and unmissable! The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton
Humphry Repton was the successor to Capability Brown as Britains pre-eminent landscape gardener. He was renowned for inventing the Red Book. This was an artwork for prospective clients that combined hand-written design proposals with theatrical before-and-after watercolour illustrations. Nine were produced for Yorkshire clients. The talk will include Reptons commission from Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth Woodhouse (1791-1794), which introduced him to patronage in Yorkshire. It will then focus on those adjacent to Leeds for the new aristocrats at Harewood (1800), the industrialist, Benjamin Gott, at Armley House (1810) and the banker, John Blayds II at Oulton Hall (1810). Dr Patrick Eyres is co-author, with Karen Lynch, of On The Spot: The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton, Landscape Gardener (2018), which is now available as a PDF for a mere 10.00 from www.NewArcadianPress.co.uk. Let us take you on a journey through the history of Leeds and highlight treasures from our library collections. Pop along to the 2nd floor of Leeds Central Library to explore collections dating from the 17th century in our Heritage Open Day showcase event. Focusing on this year's Architecture theme, we will transport visitors through the history of Leeds and explore the city's buildings and green spaces. Librarians will handpick their favourite examples, from historic maps to beautiful prints and everything in-between. This event is free and no booking is required. Leeds Library and Cloth Cat invite you to a FREE five week songwriting course to help you develop your craft and artistry.The course will be led by musicianJack Winn, who will support you to create your own compositions using guitar,keyboard or voice. You will have the opportunity to explore choosing a theme, writing your own lyrics and structuring your song. Jack will help you to express yourself through song, and you'll have the option to perform what you have been working on at the Music:Leeds Open Mic night in the final session. Leeds Zine Lates! Chart Your Cycle Turns 20: A Celebration of Zine Activism with Chella Quint OBE
Join us at Leeds Zine Library for a joyful and zine-filled celebration with author, activist, and Sheffield Zine Fest co-founder, Chella Quint OBE, marking 20 years since she first self-published Chart Your Cycle and Adventures in Menstruating #1. Kicking off with an informal In Conversation and Q&A, well dive into the journey from photocopied period charts to international campaigns, via Chellas cult zines, Ladiyfest shows, grassroots outreach, craftivism, and youth-led education resources, to the now-global Period Positive movement. Find out how her ad-busting fanzines inspired her 5-star Edinburgh Fringe show, led to her work on an International Emmy-nominated childrens show, and how her popular books Be Period Positive and Own Your Period became best sellers in Germany and banned in the US! Expect readings, reflections, and behind-the-scenes stories from the early days of her DIY menstrual activism to todays push for queer, inclusive, and Period Positive menstrual literacy education through the community-based projects Period Positive Schools and Places Award, pledge, and youth-led curriculum guide. Lindsey Burrow in Conversation with Carers Leeds
The inspiring Lindsey Burrow will be joining us to talk about her memoir, Take Care: A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up. Lindsey will be in conversation with Claire Turner, CEO of Carers Leeds. The book is a life-affirming memoir of Lindsey Burrow, the working mother of three young children who inspired the nation through her selfless commitment to husband Rob Burrow (CBE), the rugby league legend she cared for following his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis.Told in Lindseys characteristically humble, charming and inspirational style, Take Care explores her life and shares her honest experiences of finding strength in the good and the bad times; in order to offer readers and families hope to overcome challenges in their own lives. The book sheds a light on the many families across the UK who care for their loved ones with little support. Finally, the book is a rousing call to action, for us all as a society to take better care of one another.
