Marching On-Line Together: A History of the Leeds United Email List
Claire Warwick and John Boocock discuss the origins and history of the Unofficial Leeds United Email List and football supporters in Cyberspace. The Leeds List claims to be the oldest surviving football supporters email list in the UK. Starting life on Internet Relay Chat in the early 1990s, the 'List' parallels the democratisation and development (or otherwise) of the internet. Claire and John will tell the tale of a community of football supporters coming together using the internet over three decades. Initially mainly inhabited by techies and academics, the List soon became the on-line home to Leeds United Supporters from all walks of life, spread right across the World. Claire and John will also compare the 'List' to the emergence of other social networks and point out some rather striking cultural differences. Music, Football, Fanzines

8 Jul 2025 - 8 Jul 2025

Music and football have a long and enduring connection, whether its fans taking inspiration from chart-topping singles to create terrace chants or indie bands creating world cup anthems and sponsoring non-league clubs. The event will feature: lead singer of The Farm and founder of the influential zine The End, Peter Hooton; author of Zerox Machine: Punk, Post-Punk and Fanzines in Britain, 197688, Matt Worley; Alternative Wales zine contributor and Welsh Music Podcast co-host, James Cuff; and academic Alice Hoole, whose work examines participation in subcultural football spaces. The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton
Humphry Repton was the successor to Capability Brown as Britains pre-eminent landscape gardener. He was renowned for inventing the Red Book. This was an artwork for prospective clients that combined hand-written design proposals with theatrical before-and-after watercolour illustrations. Nine were produced for Yorkshire clients. The talk will include Reptons commission from Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth Woodhouse (1791-1794), which introduced him to patronage in Yorkshire. It will then focus on those adjacent to Leeds for the new aristocrats at Harewood (1800), the industrialist, Benjamin Gott, at Armley House (1810) and the banker, John Blayds II at Oulton Hall (1810). Dr Patrick Eyres is co-author, with Karen Lynch, of On The Spot: The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton, Landscape Gardener (2018), which is now available as a PDF for a mere 10.00 from www.NewArcadianPress.co.uk.
