Jeremy Bowen: Truth Under Fire

Jeremy Bowen: Truth Under Fire

22 Sept 2026 - 28 Oct 2026

Gaza. Ukraine. Syria. Sudan. Yemen. The world is facing more armed conflicts than at any point in decades, and Jeremy Bowen has reported from the centre of nearly all of them. As the BBC's International Editor, Jeremy has spent over 40 years covering more than 90 countries and 20 wars. From El Salvador in 1989 to the frontlines today, he has interviewed world leaders, documented war crimes, been shot at, and survived to tell the stories. But something has changed. Israel prevents foreign journalists from entering Gaza. Russia controls the narrative in occupied Ukraine. Governments from Syria to Sudan restrict access, manipulate information, and discredit reporters who contradict official accounts. In the age of social media, competing claims flood our screens, but who is telling the truth? And how do we know? Jeremy has spent his career fighting for access, verifying what others want hidden, and bearing witness when governments would rather the world look away. He will explain how the battle for truth is being waged, why press freedom is collapsing in conflict zones, and what it means when the first casualty of war is not just truth, but those trying to report it. In the second half, audiences will have the chance to put their questions to a journalist who has made it his life's work to get as close to the truth as possible—even when that truth is dangerous, disputed, or under fire. An essential evening for anyone who wants to understand the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.

English Symphony Orchestra: Renewal and Celebration
Tchaikovsky's most uplifting and exuberant symphony, the Fourth, emerged following a period of profound personal crisis. As a declaration of new-found confidence, hope and optimism, it is almost without equal in the classical canon. Erich Wolfgang Korngold had spent many of his prime years as a a film composer in exile from his native Vienna. At the time he fled to America, he declared he would not write for the concert hall so long as Hitler was in power, and for over a decade, he held firm. At long last, as the world celebrated the end of WW II and a new ear of renewal and hope in Europe, Korngold penned his Violin Concerto, a work that overflows with a decade of melodic riches Korngold had been waiting to share with the world. Elgar, much like his hero Brahms, approached writing a first symphony with a mix of trepidation and anxiety. His first sustained attempt to write one in 1903 produced no symphony, but instead Elgar's greatest tone poem, In the South.
English Symphony Orchestra: Russian Masterpieces
Glinka's fiery and virtuosic Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla sets the stage for an evening that sees the ESO traversing two monumental Russian works of the 1930s. Rachmaninov the emigré crowned his unique cycle of works for piano and orchestra with his 1934 Rhapsody, a work with. the kind of abundance of melodic riches and virtuosic thrills in which Rachmaninov remains without peer. Composed only three years later, Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony emerged from the darkest days of Stalinist repression as a form of musical testimony to the suffering and resilience of the Russian people which has made it, in the view of many music lovers worldwide, the definitive symphony of the 20th Century.
English Symphony Orchestra: The Romantics
Bruckner's Fourth Symphony has long been an audience favourite, with it's pitch perfect balance of long-breathed melodies and orchestral drama more than meriting its nickname "The Romantic." Throughout the Fourth, it is that most evocative and romantic of instruments, the horn, which serves as protagonist and narrator, and so it is with the other two works on the programme. Britain's exciting young superstar of the horn, Ben Goldscheider, joins the ESO for Strauss's Everest of horn concertos, and the programme opens with the magical horn quartet which sets the scene for Humperdink's operatic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel
