City Varieties Music Hall

This is an oldy and a goody. Built in 1865, this venue has seen three centuries come and go, and has managed to remain virtually unchanged. That being said, it was closed in 2009 to undergo some repairs, but it hasn't lost any of that old school charm. The hall's list of past performers is particularly impressive, with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harry Houdini, Lilly Langtry, Harry Lauder and Mickey Rooney all having performed at the venue. Not that quality is by any means a thing of the past, as music hall continues to attract big names in live music, variety and comedy.

Kenny Thomas

Kenny Thomas

17 May 2025 - 25 Jul 2025

Kenny Thomas was one of the most popular UK soul dance vocalists of the early 1990s. His biggest UK hit came in 1991 with ‘Thinking About Your Love’ (number 4), while his debut album sold more than 600, 000 copies in the UK alone. Other hit singles spawned by that debut included ‘Outstanding’, ‘The Best Of You’ and ‘Tender Love’, and also resulted in a Brit Award nomination for Best British Male Vocalist and Best British Newcomer. The warm, relaxed dance grooves of that debut were replicated on a second album that continued Thomas’ massive commercial success. Guest musicians this time round included the Young Disciples, Nu Colours and the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. This time some of the bonhomie of the original set was more restrained, with a slightly more mature lyrical vision reflecting more real-life experiences. Over the years Kenny has retained an extremely loyal following on the Soul/Funk circuit and is often one of the first names ‘considered’ for ‘Soul All dayers’ etc. However, now in 2021 Kenny has recruited a new band and is about to go out live to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his debut album ‘Voices’, that featured the hits Thinking about your love, Outstanding, Tender Love & Best of you In addition to the album Kenny has just released in conjunction with Dr Packer a new version of the seminal Fatback Band classic ‘I found lovin’ – this song has been a staple of Kenny’s live sets for some time and has already landed in several Soul based singles charts across the UK

Ward Thomas

Ward Thomas

12 Sept 2025 - 26 Nov 2025

Ward Thomas could tell that change was afoot from the moment they wrote Cartwheels, now the punch-to-the-stomach title track of their sensational second album. Straight away the sisters knew the song was special. What they didn’t know was that their second album ‘Cartwheels’ would sail to #1 on the UK Album Chart on release making them the first ever UK country act to do so. Cartwheels the album, as you might guess, contains a cartwheel of emotions and each song suggested its own sound. “Lyrically, it was much more grown-up than anything on our debut. Sonically, it was a move away from country to lots of other influences we grew up with – Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, KT Tunstall, some Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift’s Red album. We’re still influenced by country, we still adore the Dixie Chicks and Kacey Musgraves, but this isn’t just a country album.” In fact, the title track is among several on the album to shrug off country entirely, although the 22 year old twins’ beguiling harmonies remain their calling card. Lose Me is a fast-paced pop song that rocks out. The glorious Almost Easy adds strings and electronics to the mix. Bewitching ballad Who I’m Not is set to shimmering orchestration. Boisterous lead single Carry You Home is simply a storming pop song. The biggest change, however, was that the teenagers became adults. With their co-writers, they were four young women, sitting in a room, pouring their hearts out. They didn’t think in terms of genre, but of stories, emotions and coping mechanisms. They wrote about situations they had either experienced themselves or seen their friends go through. In extraordinary couplets they captured everything from deep friendship to deep despair, from loneliness and heartbreak to the joy of moving on, from feeling like a failure to the pleasure of heading to the hills to de-stress.

He explores how and if he'll ever achieve this, and how this has and continues to impact his life. Reflecting on society's perception of queer, disabled, and neurodiverse communities, as well as his own perception of himself, Mitchell creates a heartwarming, emotional but always hilarious show.

Lucy is completely blind and has a chromosome 16 duplication, which is a rare condition affecting mental health with autism traits and affecting overall communication. Lucy is hypermobile and suffers with CVS. She is in remission from bilateral retina-blastoma and is globally developmentally delayed. Despite these challenges, Lucy’s extraordinary musical talent has become her voice. From the age of five, Lucy’s unique gift for playing back music after hearing it just once captivated her family. Crowned the ‘unofficial winner’ of The Piano by world-renowned pianist Lang Lang and pop star Mika for her stunning rendition of Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1, Lucy has gone on to conquer some of the world’s most prestigious stages. From performing at HRH King’s Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, broadcast to 18 million viewers, to gracing the iconic Royal Albert Hall during Classic FM Live, Lucy’s musical journey has been nothing short of magical. With a special bond forged with Lang Lang, the two have performed together on multiple occasions, including the ITV Royal Variety Performance, and their impromptu duet of Faure’s Pavane Op.50 became an instant fan favourite. Named an International Ambassador for the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, Lucy’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. This is Lucy — an inspiring talent whose music transcends boundaries and speaks directly to the heart. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this incredible journey as she performs a wide repertoire of music including Claude Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1, Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne No. 4, J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C Major, Stevie Wonder’s I Wish and many more of Lucy’s favourites.

Steve Knightley

Steve Knightley

5 Nov 2025 - 16 Nov 2025

As a long-serving troubadour of the folk and acoustic music scene, master songwriter and storyteller Steve Knightley has spent much of his life on the road, collecting songs, stories, anecdotes and observations with the odd disaster along the way. Best known for his work with the award-winning acoustic roots group Show of Hands, Steve has performed in venues from the Albert Hole in Bristol to the Albert Hall in London. His impressive back catalogue of songs are modern classics, still filling the folk clubs and festival fields, and forever influencing the next generation of folk artists. Steve says, 'A life on the road certainly has its challenges, but I can't say I'd do it differently if I had to start all over again. The format of 'Songs and Stories', and now 'Roadworks' allows me to share the stories I've collected over the years, along with plenty of observations along the way. It's just me, a radio mic and a couple of guitars which is daunting and liberating in equal measures, and it's enabled me to build elements into my shows which I've never been able to before.'

O'hooley & Tidow: So Long For Now

O'hooley & Tidow: So Long For Now

14 Nov 2025 - 14 Nov 2025

After 15 years of performing together, eight studio albums, four BBC Folk Award nominations, composing Gentleman Jack as the BBC/HBO drama theme tune and performing at hundreds of venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, the much-loved Yorkshire folk duo of Belinda O’Hooley & Heidi Tidow have made the momentous decision to say farewell for now in order to explore other adventures that are beckoning to them. To help their incredibly loving and loyal audiences process this news, they are embarking upon one last tour of all their favourite venues from over the years. Belinda and Heidi’s boundless songwriting has been described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional’ and The Independent as ‘defiant, robust, northern, poetical, political folk music for the times we live in’. Moving, melodic, dramatic and tender – from stories of parenthood, the call of a song thrush, to a portrait of the last days of a touching relationship between their neighbour Matthew and his beloved Alsatian, Ted, and even a collaboration with Gentleman Jack herself, Suranne Jones on The Ballad of Anne and Ann, they explore, consider and connect subjects and stories in a distinctive, inventive and memorable way. Having the originality and skill to invite comparison with the most celebrated harmony duos, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson says: “They sing together in the way families do. Normally, you only get that closeness in the voices with family bands like The Coppers or The Watersons.” ★★★★★ ‘Boundless songwriting and exquisite harmonies that truly shine’ Guardian “Brilliant and beautiful” Maxine Peake
