What Three Words: Otway & Barrett

What Three Words: Otway & Barrett

5 Sept 2025 - 16 Nov 2025

This magnetic bond still holds after more than 50 years of attempted escapes. Still loved for their total in-yer-face originality, the contrast between the deadpan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John's lyrical genius and Willy's outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!). Willy's interest in making instruments began when he commandeered two guitars made by his dad in 1965. One from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank which became affectionately known as the Les Dawson, and the other branded the Mk1 Schitstik electric slide of similar pedigree. These instruments were used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free and Racing Cars. Willy's remark this will be the last time that many of you will see us together again was often hastily misinterpreted as the final throw of the dice, but the reason given: it's not us packing up, it's you lot dying off, you know who you are! is often overlooked by eager scribes. And so the rumours abound. Last year, John celebrated his 5,000th gig to a packed house at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. And if that's not enough, we are now talking about DOCTOR JOHN an Honorary PhD in Music by Oxford Brookes University. Im really thrilled to be awarded this totally unexpected honour, especially as I failed all my A levels as I decided to concentrate on preparing for my burgeoning career as a rock star. To get this from Oxford Brookes 50 years later shows I did the right thing. For any Otway/Barrett virgins out there who dont know what to expect, be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another: An amazing and irreverent performance by two master entertainers

The Guilty Men

The Guilty Men

6 Nov 2025 - 6 Nov 2025

he days of the Supergroup may be long past but The Guilty Men would surely qualify for that description! The band is made up of five of the finest musicians from the Northwest of England. Between them, they have played over 10,000 gigs on planet Earth, recorded thousands of songs and made countless radio and TV appearances. To say theyre experienced would be an understatement! The story starts in 1979, in Manchester, England. Clive Gregson and Neil Cossar met through a mutual friend, John Martin, the bassist in The Cheaters Neil was the band's guitarist. Clive was the leader of Any Trouble. The Cheaters had a PA, Any Trouble owned a van. It made sense to pool resources, often with both bands on the same bill happy days! Any Trouble signed to Stiff Records, The Cheaters signed to EMI. Both bands released several albums and played thousands of shows. Both bands ran their course Clive then went on to a successful partnership with singer Christine Collister, released over 20 solo albums, and spent 15 years in Nashville working as a session musician and producer. Neil became a radio DJ, formed a Music PR company and launched the online brand This Day in Music, before becoming a music book publisher. Cut to 2021 lifelong friends Clive and Neil are catching up over lunch and thought it might be fun to try and write some songs together Several weeks and quite a few songs later, they decided to expand the enterprise from a songwriting workshop to a full blown band. Clive recruited keyboardist Jez Smith and bassist Craig Fletcher from John Lees Barclay James Harvest and the lineup was completed with the addition of legendary drummer, Paul Burgess, who has played with 10cc since 1973. They named the band The Guilty Men and headed into the recording studio. Cut to 2024 and The Guilty Men's debut album Invisible Confetti is ready to roll. 13 brand new songs recorded in the old-fashioned way: everybody playing live in the studio, intent on catching the moment. Most of the songs were laid down in no more than 2 or 3 takes and with four featured lead vocalists, the album covers a lot of musical bases. Invisible Confetti rocks with nods to Americana, country, folk, pop, psychedelia it's an exhilarating ride from start to finish. All aboard!
Hot Seats

Hot Seats

20 Jul 2025 - 20 Jul 2025

Absolutely superb stunning musicians. If you get a chance to see them, take it. Very highly recommended. Bruce MacGregor, BBC Radio Scotland For 22 years, The Hot Seats, have gained and burnished the reputation as the carriers of an important and overlooked tradition of American and international folk music social commentator, satirist, and entertainer. The Skillet Lickers, The Hoosier Hot Shots, Woodie Guthrie, Gus Cannon, Uncle Dave Macon, Frank Zappa these are pools in which The Hot Seats swim. Formed in 2002 by a group of like-minded friends for a weekly bar gig, the band's live shows quickly became well known for on stage antics, one-act plays, and Dada-esque humor, underpinned by a foundation in hard-driving bluegrass, old time, ragtime, jug blues, and early country music. Between 2005-2018, The Hot Seats toured extensively in the US and UK, performing in nearly the full spectrum of venue size and situation: living room to dive bar; square dance to theater). Some of their festival highlights include: Tønder Festival, The Richmond Folk Festival, Red Wing Roots, Celtic Connections, The Shetland Folk Festival, The Orkney Folk Festival, South By Southwest, Floyd Fest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival, The Watermelon Park Festival, The Northeast Kingdom Music Festival, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, Maverick Festival, HebCeltFest, Speyfest, Leicester Summer Sundae and multiple occasions Edinburgh Festival Fringe (including winning a Herald Angel Award in 2006). Since 2020, the band's original core of Ben Belcher (banjo, bass, fiddle), Josh Bearman (mandolin, banjo, guitar) and Jake Sellers (percussion bass) have been joined by Rudy Bee (fiddle, tuba, accordion, piano), JM Nobile (mandolin, guitar), and Charles Arthur (banjo, fiddle, resophonic guitar). If you dont have a good time when the Hot Seats play, check your pulse. You might be dead. Chris Bopst (Richmond Times Dispatch)
The 70s Songs of Stumpy Anderson

The 70s Songs of Stumpy Anderson

27 Mar 2026 - 27 Mar 2026

In 2019, the time capsule buried in 1979 by Stumpy Sanderson and his mischievous gang of working-class boys was unearthed. Within this capsule were not only Stumpy's short stories about the gang's japes, scrapes and capers they had got up to and into during the 1970s, but also an old Memorex cassette containing 33 of his bizarre songs that he had bashed out on acoustic guitar. Then, in 2023 a second time capsule was discovered containing further stories and 22 more songs. Join Norfolk storyteller and singer/songwriter, Andrew Brammer, in a musical offshoot of his highly successful humorous storytelling shows. Listen to the extraordinary songs of Stumpy Sanderson, and the astonishing anecdotes and memories behind them; material described by some as a surreal cross between The Stranglers, Lou Reed, and Leonard Cohen.
Bowjangles

Bowjangles

4 Oct 2025 - 4 Oct 2025

We were never satisfied sitting still and playing our instruments, so over the years we added more and more dimensions to our performances, and now we create our own theatre shows where we provide our own musical score. We love to PLAY. We have been together for 16 years and we travel the world performing in theatres and halls - from concert halls across Asia to village halls in rural UK, arts festivals and street festivals, in schools, hospitals and the occasional prison. We also love performing at cabarets, private events and functions, and occasionally you might even see us on TV, or doing a street show. Though we are a string quartet we also play together as the Bowjangles band- violin, piano, double bass and drums, and of course four voices. In 2018 we won the 'Spirit of the Fringe' award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for our show Excalibow and in early 2019 we were nominated for the Rural Touring Awards Best Performance. In July 2019 we were featured on BBC CBeebies show Yolanda's Band Jam and later that summer made our Off-Broadway debut at the SoHo Playhouse in New York. 2020-21 saw us creating our latest show Dracula in Space over Zoom, writing/composing from our own homes and even finding ways to rehearse remotely. The fruits of these labours we took to the Edinburgh Fringe 2023 where our smash hit show was critically acclaimed and featured on ITV and Sky TV. Also in 2023 we performed for Her Majesty the Queen on her first official visit to East Anglia, and early 2024 has already seen our debut performance on stage at the Royal Festival Hall alongside Yolanda Brown.
