Goodnight Mr Tom

16 Oct 2025 - 18 Oct 2025

Presented by The Harrogate Dramatic Society. Set in 1939, with the second world war looming, Goodnight Mr Tom is heart-warming and heart-wrenching in equal measure. Adapted from the well-known novel by Michelle Magorian, the action follows an evacuee, William, as he leaves his home in London and arrives in the idyllic English countryside. This moving play explores the remarkable and moving friendship that occurs between William and an elderly recluse. All seems perfect, until William is suddenly summoned back to London by his mother, with devastating consequences. A must-see play that depicts the reality of life during the war and how life can change in a moment. This amateur production of Goodnight Mister Tom is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
Re-wilding landscapes and Gardens with Frances Tophill
Join gardener, TV presenter and author Frances Tophill for this discursive and open-minded talk on the topic of re-wilding in both a landscape and garden setting. Frances will explore the best methods to use to support wildlife, whether it is allowing nature to regenerate on its own, or targeting species for active landscape restoration and wildlife focused garden design. Hear about Frances’ thoughts on different techniques and methods of garden design and construction that can support biodiversity, and the best plants to choose to support varied species. From ponds, to soil, fences, to hedges, parking, pathways and planting, the garden holds a world of potential. Can and crucially should we approach landscapes with the same mindset? Frances started her love affair with plants undertaking an NVQ and apprenticeship at The Salutation Garden in Kent followed quickly by a degree in Horticulture with Plantsmanship at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Her practical gardening experience is extensive: she worked a season at Monet’s garden, has worked at the Andromeda Botanical Garden in Barbados and has done WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) work at a number of different locations including work on vineyards and in viticulture. Frances has spent many years working in gardens with vulnerable adults, including adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges. She is passionate about conversation and sustainability and has worked in native tree planting for the Conifer Conservation Project in Edinburgh and for Moor Trees in Devon. Frances is the Patron of Thanet Urban Forest and works with the RHS on the Campaign for School Gardening. On-screen Frances is know for her work with Gardeners’ World and Love Your Garden. She is the author of 4 books. Frances will be signing books on the evening. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page.

Beauty of birds drawing workshop

Beauty of birds drawing workshop

24 Jan 2026 - 24 Jan 2026

Join natural history artist James Winrow on this inspirational workshop introducing the techniques and tools he uses to capture the character and delicate beauty of birds. Drawing has been used for thousands of years to record, observe, celebrate and honour the natural world around us. This bird portrait workshop enables you to experience this ancient tradition using modern materials and techniques. Working exclusively with graphite, James will show you how to craft a portrait of a bird in a natural history illustration style. Using freehand and scientific illustration techniques, you will learn basic and advanced methods of applying graphite, and go through the process of creating a detailed illustration from start to finish. You will leave with a beautiful bird portrait and a deeper appreciation and understanding of the depth and richness of the natural world around us – a renewed sense of wonder! All abilities are welcomed. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page. James grew up at the foot of the South Downs in Sussex where he roamed the chalk hills bird watching, drawing, exploring and fishing. After a stint running a design studio he took a much-needed sabbatical, getting his hands in the dirt working on farms around the UK and living in grizzly bear country in northern British Columbia. Returning to the UK he worked for two years leading nature awareness and bushcraft courses for children and adults, immersed in the rich Devon countryside. This ongoing rewilding of heart and mind led him to unearth his passion for drawing the natural world. He now loves to share this magic with others, drawing them deeper into nature. His work is sold in various shops in the UK and USA and is also held in private collections in both countries. He is married with four children and lives in the Teign Valley, surrounded by the beauty and wildlife of Dartmoor National Park.

He works with recycled cardboard for its immediacy, ease of availability and low environmental impact. Whilst sculpting with cardboard James teaches what he has learnt so far. James says: ‘Working with cardboard has always been about creating and supporting a level playing field for the arts, available to everyone from every walk of life. As a material, you are free to make anything you can imagine.’ There will be a lunch break in the middle of this workshop. You are welcome to visit the Cafe at RAMM, or to bring a packed lunch to eat in the workshop room. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page.

Making Lace in Devon: an Environmental and Social History From Handicraft to Mass Production
Join us at the third Exeter University History Department/Friends of RAMM Annual Lecture with Professor Helen Berry, Head of the Department of History at the University of Exeter. Professor Berry specializes in British history from 1660 to 1830, from histories of production and consumption in Britain during the eighteenth century, to how global trade and economics shaped personal experiences, families and communities. RAMM has one of the finest collections of ‘Honiton’ lace, made by hand in East Devon and in other parts of the West Country from the seventeenth century to modern times. In this talk, historian Professor Helen Berry considers how the production of handmade lace by women and children changed from being a cottage industry located primarily in maritime communities with the arrival of cheaper mass-produced industrial lace. In the process of industrialisation, working people’s lives and communities changed. The demand for high-quality handmade lace was preserved only in certain areas, supplying rich consumers at times when (as in the making of royal wedding dresses) the fashion for handmade lace revived. In the long term, lacemaking was just one example of how a sustainable handicraft became a luxury industry, built on mass production that was costly in both human and environmental terms.
