Björn Again

Björn Again

10 Mar 2027 - 11 Apr 2027

Björn Again. The original Australian ABBA Homage has amassed over 5,800 shows in 78 countries in 39 years. Rod Stephen had previously been working in metallurgical research when at the age of 29 and inspired by legendary New Zealand band Split Enz’s musicianship and theatrics opted for a career change to create a new concept by revisiting the music and fashion of the 1970s. Rod had originally considered basing a nostalgic show on one of three all time top bands, The Beatles, Queen and ABBA but believing that the latter globally encapsulated all that was good (and maybe some not so good?) about the 1970s decided ABBA was ideal to focus his efforts on. After countless auditions and months of rehearsals and studying music and videos all Rod then needed was to devise a great show format to go with the name…and then the BJÖRN AGAIN show was ready to rock and roll !!! Having been acknowledged by BJÖRN ULVAEUS as being the show that single-handedly initiated the ABBA revival in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the BJÖRN AGAIN show is hailed as the most popular and successful show of its type.

Bardi Symphony Orchestra: 40th Anniversary Concert
Jonathan Lo conductor Thomas Kelly piano Bardi Symphony Orchestra GERSHWIN Cuban Overture RACHMANINOV Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini MOTTRAM 40th Anniversary Commission ELGAR Enigma Variations Audience favourite Jonathan Lo returns to the Bardi for the Orchestra's 40th Anniversary Concert exploring friendship and joy in music. As each movement is inspired by one of Elgar's friends, Jonathan specifically chose the Enigma Variations for this concert to celebrate friendship rooted in music, which he rightly sees as one of the foundations of the Bardi Symphony Orchestra. The Elgar is mirrored by Rachmaninov’s sparkling variations in his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in the first half, with Liszt Piano Competition finalist Thomas Kelly as soloist. Gershwin’s Cuban Overture will give the concert a swinging start, while a newly commissioned celebratory work by Paul Mottram – one of the Orchestra’s first violinists and an acclaimed composer for television and film – completes what promises to be a truly special occasion. Bardi Symphony Orchestra: Swan Lake and Petrushka
Leonard Elschenbroich conductor Bardi Symphony Orchestra PROKOFIEV Lieutenant Kijé Suite TCHAIKOVSKY Swan Lake Suite STRAVINSKY Petrushka Star cello soloist turned conductor Leonard Elschenbroich joins the Bardi for this programme exploring how music can tell stories. The suite taken from Prokofiev’s music for Lieutenant Kijé, one of the earliest sound films ever made in the USSR, is full of character and lyricism. Following this, the music from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake is some of the best-loved and best-known music in the repertoire, beautifully depicting a tragic story of love. This thought-provoking exploration of musical storytelling is completed in the second half of the concert by Stravinsky’s energetic music to the ballet Petrushka, which follows the lives of three puppets and is an entertaining tragic comedy full of a sense of chaos and mischief. Philharmonia: Manfred Honeck and Emanuel Ax
Manfred Honeck conductor Emanuel Ax piano J STRAUSS II Overture, Die Fledermaus MOZART Piano Concerto No. 25, K. 503 R STRAUSS Elektra Suite (arr. Honeck and Ille) Emanuel Ax plays one of Mozart's greatest concertos, framed by music from two operas that couldn't be more different. You can almost hear the fizz of champagne in the overture to Die Fledermaus (The Bat). Johann Strauss's sparkling music sets the scene for a tale of friendship and frivolity, drinking, dancing and disguise, extra-marital flirtation and forgiveness. Next comes Mozart's Piano Concerto K. 503, acclaimed by a contemporary critic not just as one of his finest concertos, but "maybe the most magnificent of all the concertos which have ever been written." Multiple Grammy-winner Emanuel Ax, a leading light among pianists for over half a century, follows in Mozart’s footsteps as soloist. The world of Greek mythology is full of dysfunctional families, but Elektra's is one of the most dysfunctional of them all. At the opposite end of the emotional spectrum to Die Fledermaus, Richard Strauss's Elektra is a dark and gripping story of murder and revenge. Manfred Honeck's suite distils the opera into half an hour of orchestral drama, retaining all the visceral intensity and impact of the original.
Philharmonia: Manfred Honeck and Vivi Vassileva
Manfred Honeck conductor Vivi Vassileva percussion PÄRT Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten MACMILLAN Veni, Veni, Emmanuel BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 Vivi Vassileva brings her exuberant virtuosity to James MacMillan's percussion concerto, the centrepiece of a programme that balances grief and joy, reflection and action, the spiritual and the physical. In Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, built around a fifteenth-century plainchant, MacMillan explores the Advent message of 'liberation from fear, anguish and oppression' in music full of joyful physicality, even showmanship. It's the perfect opportunity to experience the astonishing skill of percussionist Vivi Vassileva. Arvo Pärt's Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten is one of the works that brought him the kind of acclaim that’s rarely accorded to living composers of 'classical' music. A single bell emerges from silence, then groups of string players play overlapping descending scales to create an effect of 'endless slow-motion falling', building in intensity until the silence returns. From these simple ingredients, Pärt builds music of haunting power. The slow movement funeral march of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony (used to great effect in the film The King’s Speech) matches Pärt's Cantus in its expressive intensity. It made such an impression at its premiere, a benefit concert for soldiers after some of the most deadly fighting of the Napoleonic Wars, that the audience clamoured for it to be repeated on the spot. But the other movements counter it with cheerful, dancing melodies, and the finale swirls to a triumphant close. Philharmonia: Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Bomsori Kim
Alpesh Chauhan conductor Bomsori Kim violin FARRENC Overture No. 2 MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 The Philharmonia pulls out all the stops for a season finale packed with energy, excellence, and copious amounts of drama. Things get off to a vibrant start in Louise Farrenc's concert overture – a seven-minute orchestral workout with many a catchy melody on the way. Celebrated in her lifetime for her music of power and poise, an acclaimed concert pianist and internationally renowned composer, Farrenc was the only woman professor at the Paris Conservatoire in the whole of the 19th century. Then comes Mendelssohn's only Violin Concerto with Korean soloist Bomsori Kim, a superstar in her homeland. Lyrical and virtuosic in equal measure, it's a pinnacle of the classical repertoire and has long been one of the best-loved works in the concert hall. After the interval, experience the full force of the Philharmonia sound in Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony: a powerful exploration of the meaning of life. From deceptively simple melodies, Tchaikovsky builds a spellbinding forty minutes of high emotional drama. What better way to send off the season? Philharmonia: Santtu conducts Beethoven and Reich
ADAMS Short Ride in a Fast Machine BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 1 REICH The Desert Music Few composers have had such an impact on the course of musical history as the three brought together in this evening's concert: Ludwig van Beethoven in the opening years of the 19th century, John Adams and Steve Reich in our own time. Adams's exhilarating Short Ride in a Fast Machine evokes a white-knuckle ride he took with a friend in a "very fancy Italian sports car". A relentless beat on the woodblock launches the orchestra into a full-throttle four-minute fanfare. The Desert Music is the biggest orchestral piece by master of minimalism Steve Reich. Reich sets texts by William Carlos Williams, and uses the poet’s name as the inspiration for a giant palindromic structure built from his characteristic interlocking, constantly shifting rhythmic patterns. There’s nothing minimalist about the forces Reich musters: glockenspiels, xylophones, marimbas, pianos, a profusion of untuned percussion and a chorus join the orchestra to weave a mesmerising web of sound. Between these two masterpieces of the 1980s comes Beethoven’s first foray into the world of the symphony – a world he enriched beyond measure. Back in 1800, fans of Mozart and Haydn would have found much that was familiar about Beethoven’s graceful symphonic writing, along with some fresh, imaginative twists that hinted there was much more to come. Philharmonia: Seong-Jin Cho plays Tchaikovsky
Santtu-Matias Rouvali conductor Seong-Jin Cho piano BORODIN In the Steppes of Central Asia TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 11 'The Year 1905' Star pianist Seong-Jin Cho joins forces with his regular collaborator and 'musical soulmate' Santtu, and the outstanding musicians of the Philharmonia Orchestra. First comes Borodin’s atmospheric musical picture of a caravan of merchants and their camels crossing the steppe, with moments in the spotlight for some of the Philharmonia's woodwind principals. Then it’s time for Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, one of the peaks of the piano repertoire. From its majestic opening chords to the fiery fingerwork of its finale, with many a sweep-you-off-your-feet melody along the way, it gives Seong-Jin Cho the chance to show every aspect of his virtuosity. The critic at its Boston premiere who declared that it was 'hardly destined to become a classic' could not have been more wrong. Shostakovich's Eleventh Symphony has been called 'a film score without a film.' Setting the scene outside the Winter Palace on a freezing day in January 1905, he goes on to describe in music of great power and immediacy the 'Bloody Sunday' massacre of peaceful protesters by the Tsar’s Cossack troops. Revolutionary songs and laments are threaded through the symphony. And the violence of the finale, with its tolling bells and relentless drums, sounds a warning to the future.
The Mercians

The Mercians

23 Jan 2027 - 23 Jan 2027

The Mercians have announced their biggest headline show to date, here at the Hall in January! They'll be playing their debut album, Author of My Own Misfortune, in full alongside fan favourites. "Author of My Own Misfortune is the biggest moment in our band’s career. After four years of finding our sound and writing songs that felt completely honest, it finally feels like the right time to share our debut album. The record is built around the idea that while we can’t choose what life throws at us, we can choose how we live with it. It’s not about pretending everything’s okay, it’s about making space for the difficult moments and finding hope without ignoring them. As five very normal lads from the Midlands, this album is the result of every setback, every small win and every lesson we’ve learned along the way. More than anything, we hope these songs give people a place to escape, feel understood and remind them they’re never alone in what they’re going through."

Michael Portillo - A Life of Two Halves
Secretary of State. Traveller. TV superstar. The inimitable Michael Portillo joins us live on stage to share funny, insightful, and poignant stories from his extraordinarily rich and varied life.  The son of a refugee who rose to become one of Britain's leading politicians and best loved broadcasters, Michael Portillo's life has been a game of two halves. As a statesman he served under Margaret Thatcher, ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, and lost his seat in one of the most famous moments in British political history, only to become one of the nation's favourite broadcasters, sparring with Diane Abbott and Andrew O'Neill and enthralling millions of us with his travels on the world's greatest railways.  In this unique stage show, Michael will share his life story, from his late father's experiences of the Spanish Civil War and escape to England, where he and Michael's mother met while looking after refugee children, all the way to his present-day adventures travelling across Spain, the USA, India, and beyond.  We'll hear Michael's funny and insightful observations about his old boss Margaret Thatcher and his reflections on the decay of political power. He'll tell us about his break into TV - including the time he became a single mum. And, of course, we'll hear about the great railway journeys he has undertaken and what they can tell us about the history and state of the world today.  Whether you are passionate about politics or a fan of Michael's many international adventures, this is an unmissable treat. All aboard!
Richard Ayoade - Afterthoughts

Richard Ayoade - Afterthoughts

17 Oct 2026 - 2 Dec 2026

Join BAFTA Award-winning actor, comedian, director, and writer Richard Ayoade for an evening of reflections as he shares insights from his latest book, Afterthoughts, or Some Pistachios Won’t Open: Wisdom for the Unreflective. Partially recognisable for being in The IT Crowd, his acclaimed films Submarine and The Double, he has also hosted TV landfill like Travel Man and The Crystal Maze, and lent his nasal voice to The Boxtrolls, Early Man, Soul and The Bad Guys. But you may well know him best for his role as ‘photographer’ in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers in which he delivered the iconic line: ‘Please, Mer Sellers, can I get a shot of you and your mum?’ Now, in the midst of some self-inflicted financial difficulty, he turns to the stage, inviting you to explore over 500 of his colossal notions. Thoughts like… Where’s the box to tick if you ARE a robot? If when one door shuts another door opens, there’s something wrong with your doors. They shouldn’t be doing that. TV detectives need a gimmick. Mine would be not caring who did it. Afterthoughts goes beyond rumination, past pondering, probing further than ever before, drawing from a deeply private pool of questions – a reservoir so refreshing you may never need to think again.

Professor David Olusoga - A Global History Of The British Cup Of Tea
There is nothing more British than a cup of tea. Tea is our national drink; our national obsession. Yet the history of tea is the ultimate global story. It links over 350 years of British history to the histories of China, India, the Americas and beyond. It encompasses the Boston Tea Party, the Opium Wars, the history of the British East India Company, and more - it is a story that involves industrial espionage, a vast forgotten migration within India, and the creation in Britain of a whole new world of domestic traditions. In this brand-new talk, David Olusoga uses art, photography, history and humour to uncover the strange, unexpected, and intriguing history of our national drink. BAFTA-winning David has risen to renown in recent years, becoming prolific and highly respected in multiple spaces. He has twice interviewed US President Barack Obama, reached the finals of the BBC hit TV series Celebrity Traitors, and has enjoyed success on BBC2 with his 3-part series Empire. A fresh instalment of his much anticipated BBC2 series House Through Time is scheduled for this summer. He is of course also the author/co-author of eight books, including Black & British: A Forgotten History, awarded both the Longman-History Today Trustees Award and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize. A Q&A session will follow this talk, as will a book signing - offering you a chance to meet one of the UKs foremost public historians. Don't miss your opportunity to see David present this fascinating topic as only such an accomplished researcher and master storyteller can.

The Hawkstone Farmers Choir - This Is Home
Following an extraordinary year that has taken them from muddy fields and tractor cabs to one of the biggest stages on British television, The Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir will next embark on a major UK headline tour in March and April 2027. The tour will see them perform their own original music alongside the soaring, emotionally charged arrangements that have become their trademark. The Hawkstone Farmers Choir began with a simple call-out from Jeremy Clarkson, looking for farmers to sing on a Hawkstone beer advert. More than 40 farmers and agricultural workers came together, many accustomed to spending their working lives alone in tractors, barns and fields and something unexpected happened. What began as a group of strangers singing together became something far bigger. Under the musical direction of Simon Gwilliam and Lizzie Deane, the choir entered the 19th series of Britain’s Got Talent, delivering a hugely emotional audition performance of Elbow’s 'One Day Like This' , moving the audience and judges to tears. Then, in May 2026, they did something no choir had achieved before. Rather than returning with another cover, The Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir stepped onto the final stage to perform their own original song, 'This Is Home'’ - a song rooted in farming, belonging, community and the place they call home. The British public voted them the winners, making them the first choir to ever win Britain’s Got Talent. Defined by enormous harmonies, raw emotion and the unmistakable weight of lived experience behind every performance, The Hawkstone Farmers Choir have developed into far more than a television success story. They are an increasingly powerful voice for rural Britain - celebrating the people, communities and landscapes at the heart of British farming while refusing to shy away from the realities facing the industry. Farming remains one of the UK’s most isolated professions: long hours, financial and environmental uncertainty and a culture in which difficult conversations have not always come easily. As friendships developed within the choir, so did honest conversations about the pressures of agricultural life and mental health. Today, The Hawkstone Farmers Choir are using their collective voice to help bring those conversations into the open. This is a group of ordinary people at the centre of an extraordinary story.
