Dundee Rep Theatre

Dundee Repertory Theatre was founded in 1939 and has been in its current home since 1982, after a public appeal raised funds for a new permanent theatre space. The theatre itself hosts touring shows, but the theatre's Ensemble -- Scotland's only full-time company of actors -- also creates several new productions each year; Sunshine On Leith, the Proclaimers' jukebox musical and a show which is usually being performed somewhere in Scotland, was created by Dundee Rep Ensemble. The Rep is also the home of Scottish Dance Theatre

That’s also what Man’s Best Friend is about. Our need to connect with the world, to be of use, to be bigger. And dogs. It’s also about dogs.' - Douglas Maxwell, Writer

Moving between real and digital realms, it proposes a surreal exploration of the relationship between humans and our surroundings, stretching the notion of how we are both influenced by and implicated in the changing ecologies around us.   In an increasingly precarious world, The Violet Hour proposes a defiant convergence with the frequencies that exist between the landscape around us and the inner landscape of the imagination.

Born in the USA

14 May 2025 - 14 May 2025

Following 4 and 5 star reviews in Edinburgh and at London’s Park Theatre, this enthralling and timely solo play is touring the UK in 2025. Michigan. Present day. Ex-Ford factory worker Jimmy Vandenburg works alone in his garage servicing the classic American cars of his youth. He is the antihero of the Bruce Springsteen anthem, ‘born down in a dead man’s town’, trying to get by in the economic wasteland of the rust belt. A decorated Vietnam war veteran, Jimmy feels his service for his country was ignored after he came home, so Trump’s call to ‘Make America Great Again’ appeals to his disillusionment. But his new found politics drive a wedge between him and his wife. Then a chance visit by the son of a marine comrade killed in the war makes him doubt his convictions and confront his trauma in a profound emotional reconciliation. This highly praised, moving, and often humorous solo play bravely challenges assumptions about what drives populist politics to show how they can seduce the disillusioned and the disaffected. Following rave reviews in Edinburgh and London, this gripping play is touring the UK.
