Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

15 May 2026 - 6 Jun 2026

This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. Guided with interview, commentary and Frida’s own words, Exhibition on Screen uncovers that this, however, was not a life defined by tragedy. "Seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo..." Featuring key exhibitions and interviews with world renowned Kahlo curators, this film explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. Using cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life, men, women, politics and her cultural heritage. We might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?

The Landscape Sketch in Oil with Martin Greenland
One of the many advantages of oil is that it takes time to dry. This, for many, is a drawback but there are techniques such as wiping out which are more or less impossible with a quick drying medium such as acrylic. Working from photographs, we will aim to produce at least two smallish works working quickly. One of these will be monochrome and then we will move on to full colour. Martin will demonstrate to make it all clear. Students should bring in all their own materials. For those without oil paints, Winsor & Newton and Rowney produce very good beginner's sets. Those who already have their own paint, as much as is sensibly portable. You will need turpentine and possibly white spirit for cleaning brushes. Rags are vital and come in clothes which aren't Sunday best! Each student needs three or four (to be on the safe side) A2-A3 size painting boards or pieces of properly primed oil painting paper with clips or pins to attach to a drawing board. Lastly, each student need a number of landscape photographs to choose to copy. Martin Greenland is a highly respected contemporary artist based in The Lake District, Cumbria. Garden Trellis Feature with North Lakes Stained Glass
The craft of Stained Glass is often described as the art of light, with each piece celebrating the patterns, textures and colours within the sheet glass used. In a garden environment, stained glass can be used to compliment or contrast with its surroundings, adding pops of colour in the winter months, creating height and interest to borders or pots or simply used as a beautiful piece for your climbing plants to ascend. In this full day workshop, we will be creating an eye-catching garden feature measuring 116cm x 20cm using a contemporary black powder coated steel frame to display your glass that can be displayed in a plant pot, garden border, or even embedded in a base to make it a free-standing sculpture! (bases not included) To allow us to create smaller and more intricate designs, we will be using the Tiffany Copper Foiling technique during this session, which is suitable for both complete beginners and those already experienced working with glass. All you need to bring is yourself and an open mind! Starting with an introduction to different types of glass and design, well cover how to handle and work with glass safely and show you examples of work to provide you with some inspiration if your journey to the centre itself hasnt provided enough already! The beauty of creating these garden ornaments is that you will be producing 3 individual panels to place within the metal frame, with each panel taking any design of your choice be that inspired by nature, colour combinations, patterns or textures and will be completely unique to you. You will then be guided through how to cut and shape each individual piece of glass, wrap them in copper foil and then join them together using solder to fit each pane of the trellis, before applying a number of finishing touches such as wire or patina (darkening of the silver solder), then a protective wax and finally securing your work into the frames. All tools, materials and safety equipment will be provided. However, due to the nature of the craft, please can you ensure you are wearing closed shoes (no sandals, crocs or sling-backs) and that long hair is tied back. If you wear reading glasses, it is also advisable to bring these for the close detail work!! As the soldering process does involve lead based products, it is not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women to attend and children between the ages of 16 & 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Kate is a professional glass artist with over 30 years of experience working with both the tiffany and leadlight techniques of stained glass. How do you reconcile individual aspirations with the shared vulnerability of being in such a demanding environment? Their journey becomes a testament to resilience, a raw exploration of love, loss, and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of nature's formidable might. Of a life-changing adventure that tested their will and their relationship and which serves as a personal commentary on how we define success in the world we live in. Prashant Madan 7 mins Peripheral "Peripheral" invites audiences on a journey alongside Lucy, a spirited individual navigating a pivotal and deeply personal transformation. More than just a narrative of overcoming physical limitations, "Peripheral" delves into the essence of human perception and adaptation. It's a poignant exploration of how we find strength in vulnerability, and how the vast, untamed beauty of nature can illuminate our inner landscape, guiding us through life's most challenging transitions. Lucy's story is an inspiring testament to the power of the human spirit, demonstrating that even when one sense diminishes, others can awaken, deepening our connection to the world around us. Fashion in the Ration with Susan Crawford
Author, designer and knitting expert Susan Crawford, has long been fascinated by the link between social and fashion history. One of the most obvious examples of this connection occurred during the WW11. In June 1941, clothes rationing was introduced throughout the UK due a nationwide shortage of raw materials. During this talk Susan will cover the impact of the war and rationing on the wool industry and the changes it brought about. Susan will discuss how clothes rationing worked and explain how knitting and repairing became a huge part of the war effort with the Make Do and Mend campaign and will share some helpful hints we can all carry through to modern-day life. Susan has been involved in the wool and yarn industry for over 25 years. Now as an author, publisher, designer, teacher, yarn producer and until recently, a tenant farmer, Susan runs her yarn business from her wool studio in Staveley. Susan specialises in British wools for hand knitting, spun to her exact requirements and sent to the studio to be hand dyed and sold all over the world. Susan's books contain knitting patterns, the history of the knitting industry and hand knitting. Her main area of interest is knitted fashions of the early twentieth century. This talk is a wonderful addition to visiting "The Longest Yarn 2 " in Exhibition in Hall 1. A 3D display of D Day, knitted and crocheted by a community of people from all over the world. 80 x 3D knitted and crocheted displays which focus on Britain at War from 3 September 1939 to VE Day on 8 May 1945. In beautiful detail and all to scale, it will focus on all aspects of life from rationing, evacuees and the blitz, to the grim headlines during Britains darkest hour and the euphoria of peace. 1h 30m

Our lineup features a diverse collection of the best short films that celebrate Scotlands wild places and the people who enjoy them. This year, weve got everything from skiing to running, climbing to mountain biking, with stories about friends exchanging their skills to enjoy the outdoors in a changing climate, two brothers first big cycling adventure, and a champion mountain biker shredding his local trails. These films will move you, entertain you, and ignite your love for the outdoors, all bringing inspiring and empowering stories to the big screen! Whether you're an adventurer, nature lover, or enjoy a good story, theres something for everyone PARALLEL LINES Set in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, Parallel Lines is a short film that moves beyond the pursuit of performance and perfection to rediscover the simple joy of being outdoors. Amid unpredictable weather and changing conditions, three friends swap their usual disciplines of skiing, running, and climbing to learn from one another. What starts as a light-hearted challenge evolves into something much deeper: moments of laughter, humility, and connection that remind them why they fell in love with the hills in the first place. Parallel Lines is a story of friendship, curiosity, and the shared spirit that binds those who find home in the wild. Directors: Ryan Balharry and Bob Zane Run Time: 18 minutes TO KNOW A MOUNTAIN What does it take to know a mountain? A group of women set out into the Cairngorms Mountains to answer this question, following in the footsteps of writer & mountaineer Nan Shepherd who pioneered a different way of being in the mountains. Tired of all the stories focused on racing to the summit, Hannah Westhenry fell into the pages of her beloved book The Living Mountain, by Scottish writer & explorer Nan Shepherd. Inspired by Nans work, Hannah brings together a diverse group of women to follow in Nan's footsteps, adventuring into the UK's largest and wildest mountain range to tell a different story. To Know A Mountain , a film by Emily Baker and Michelle Sanders, interweaves visuals of the Cairngorms from its grand landscapes to its smallest details into an anti-summit story, promoting inclusion in the outdoors, and representing a diversity of ways of being in the mountains not often told in adventure films. Directors: Emily Baker and Michelle Sanders Run Time: 17 minutes MASA: (THE PLACE WHERE I AM) In Masa : (The Place Where I Am), we root ourselves in exploring the concepts of home and belonging and what those mean to Masa Sakano. Blending together Scottish and Japanese landscape, culture and language, the film will take us from the icy crags of the Scottish mountains, to Masas home in the shadow of the Cairngorms, and back to his roots and family connections in rural Japan. Director: Rachel Sarah Run Time: 18 minutes ALTER EGO Follows champion endurance mountain biker Kyle Beattie as he rides the fine line between control and chaos. Blending high-speed freeride with a dark, cinematic edge, the film explores the quiet intensity that fuels a riders obsession. Shot entirely on local trails near Inverness, ALTER EGO is a portrait of passion, landscape, and love for the outdoors. The film is a celebration of Scotlands rugged terrain and the people who live to move through it and the locals that have made this place a hub for adventure. Director: Will Rabbitt Run Time: 3 minutes MONSTER MILES Two brothers head off of their first Bikepacking Adventure in search of the Loch Ness Monster. Director: Sean Conway Run Time: 4 minutes THRAWN In the Scottish Highlands, the word thrawn means stubborn" but for a good reason a virtuous struggle to make the most of whats available. Professional snowboarder Lesley McKenna was raised on this innate tenacity, and has spent her life pushing the boundaries of her sport and advocating for the people and place that shaped her. The film shows the unique power of the snow community in its resilience and stubbornness to make the best of things, which is what Thrawn is about. Director Hannah Bailey explains the Cairngorms breeds a special kind of folk who make do with what they have, and make use of every opportunity out there. In times of environmental and societal uncertainty, this community virtue of adaptability and resilience is more important than ever. This story is an example of that. " Director: Hannah Bailey Run Time: 15 minutes AGAINST THE CLOCK Against The Clock is a short documentary exploring the life and passion of 88 year old, Caithness Cycling Club cyclist Alasdair Washington. Blending race footage with moments of personal reflection, the film offers an honest portrait of his lasting connection to the sport. It looks at the discipline, determination and enjoyment that continue to fuel his competitive spirit. Rather than focusing on results alone, the story captures the essence of what it means to keep showing up and pushing forward. What keeps the wheels turning when time refuses to slow down? Both intimate and authentic, Against The Clock celebrates a lifelong passion for cycling and community. Director: Jonathan Baikie Run Time: 13 minutes SKATEBOARDING SCOTTISH ISLANDS An artistskateboarder sets out across the Hebridean islands, using a long-distance skateboard and a sketchbook as tools for exploration. Travelling more than 650 kilometres and visiting seventeen islands - some familiar, others entirely new - he documents the journey through drawing, writing, photography, and film. The project focuses on immediate experience: responding to the landscape, the weather, and the shifting character of island roads with no agenda beyond moving through the terrain. As the relationship between rider, environment, and road surface deepens, the journey reveals a new way of observing and engaging with place. Shot primarily during solo travel, the film accompanies a wider body of artwork produced on the road but stands independently as a meditation on movement, environment, and creative process. It marks the beginning of an ongoing exploration- one that promises more pushing ahead. Director: Andy Spink Run Time: 10 minutes CAPSIZED Some people dream of summiting the highest peaks, of visiting a remote island, of being the fastest to navigate a route. But not Emily. Emily dreams of esoteric adventure, and of dragging a canoe across a bog. Enlisting her friend Lisa to join her, the pair set off to the Isle of Lewis, to navigate its intricate system of lochs. But before any trip comes the prep, and part of that means finding the right kit. For Emily, this can be a tough adventure in and of itself. When outdoor shops only stock technical clothing up to a size 16, how is adventure possible for the 45% of women in the UK who wear larger sizes? Director: Roxanna Barry Run Time: 17 minutes 2h 30m (inc Interval) 12A Some strong language.

Amashinga Film Screening with Q&A

Amashinga Film Screening with Q&A

20 Mar 2026 - 20 Mar 2026

The last sovereign King of the Zulu Kingdom, a female British missionary, an ambitious colonial official and a young Welshman are all voiced by actors to make AMASHINGA a beautiful and epic explanation of the British invasion of the Zulu Kingdom in 1879. The film, a feature documentary, offers a compelling narrative of events that led to the battles dramatised in the films Zulu and Zulu Dawn. Much of the Zulu narrative is in isiZulu with subtitles, and AMASHINGA brings new material to the screen. Voice actors guide the viewers using the actual words of Harriet Colenso, a missionary and Zulu advocate, and Magema M. Fuze the first Zulu historian to publish in isiZulu. The outcome is a beautiful experiential film with a narrative which is hard to believe, but true. Inc Q&A with the creator of Amashinga, historian and Trustee of the Museum of Military Life, Simon Sole. Simon will examine the context of colonial rule in 1879 and also highlight the modern lessons of how this war came about. All proceeds go to Cumbria Museum of Military Life in Carlisle Castle.
