The List

Edinburgh Castle

Sitting atop the volcanic Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle dominates the city skyline and is the most popular paid visitor attraction in Scotland. Events at the castle include regular re-enactments of events from its history, occasional concerts by big-name performers, and in August, the Castle Esplanade is the venue for the world-famous Military Tattoo. Other attractions include James IV's famous cannon, Mons Meg, the One O'Clock Gun with its own exhibition, and lots of military silverware. There are also various guided tours to make the most out of your visit: you can take the Morning or the Afternoon tour, the Royal Route or the Military March. If you get hungry or feel like getting a nice cup of tea, the Redcoat Café has lighter snacks while The Tea Rooms offers a more elegant surrounding for your refreshments. And what better way to finish your time in the castle than to pop in to one of the various gift shops and surprise yourself with some traditional Scottish culinary items or a lovely tartan scarf.

Maps: Memories from the Second World War
Through personal stories, photography and memorabilia, this new exhibition charts the creation and use of maps during the Second World War. Between 1939 and 1945, over 3,000 million maps were produced for the Allied, Soviet and German forces during the Second World War. Originally used to navigate the jungles of south-east Asia or for devising an escape plan, the maps on display are now mementoes, kept alongside medals and photographs to say ‘I was there.’ From aerial photography to war diaries, and even a fashionable dress made from escape and evasion maps, the exhibition introduces us to a Prisoner of War, an RAF pilot, a Brigadier and an army chaplain through the maps they kept as a memory of their war service. Callum Beattie

Callum Beattie

10 Jul 2026 - 29 Aug 2026

Callum has been hard at music for almost half his life, making his own chances, taking chances and, for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburgh-born singer-songwriter has progressed from bad gigs in pubs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously catchy debut album that scored a No.1 in The Official Scottish Albums Chart. After residing in London and Berlin for a few years, Callum has decided to move back to Scotland. His new material is a collection of songs clawed from the raw stuff of existence, nostalgic patriotism and bleeding love.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
It is the summer before Harry's third year at Hogwarts, and he has heard that it is Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), a renegade wizard, is the Prisoner of Azkaban. What Harry doesn't suspect is that Black has escaped and is coming after him. The third Harry Potter film, with a new director in Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También), and a darker, more complex book to adapt. There is enough dark humour, spectacular effects and appealing performances to keep you trapped in the franchise. But Harry's new adventure is also ponderous and overlong, regular Potter screenwriter Steven Kloves' confusing, rambling, structurally incoherent script, in which characters appear and disappear and plot turns are never realised, keeps the door firmly closed on this private club.
