English Heritage: Dartmouth Castle

Having guarded the entrance to the Dart Estuary and the port of Dartmouth for over 600 years, Dartmouth Castle is a complex 14th century defence system. A century after work started on the castle, a gun tower was added to hold a heavy cannon that could sink ships. Today, the castle provides excellent views over the estuary, particularly from the tall gun tower. Climb to the top of the battlement for the views or visit the tearoom and enjoy cream teas, sandwiches, some hot meals and hot or cold beverages. There are also benches located outside and a small lawn area available for picnicking. The castle is one mile south-east of Dartmouth off B3205. There is a pay and display car park 12 miles from the entrance and parking on the access road is free. For a fun day out, a river boat from the town quay will take you up to the castle and there are also some coastal and woodland walks in the area for wildlife spotting. Dartmouth Castle is free for members, £6.10 for adults and £3.70 for children.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night's Dream

11 Jul 2026 - 1 Aug 2026

In Shakespeares much loved bitter sweet comedy, Theseus, Duke of Athens, is about to marry Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. Four young Athenian lovers fall in and out of love, aided ( or hindered ) by the mischievous sprite Puck. Six unlikely amateur actors ( the mechanicals ) prepare to entertain the wedding party only to get caught up in fairy mayhem along the way. This is arguably Shakespeares most popular play, and was last seen on our stage in 1996.
