2025 Concert Classics Autumn Concert In Exeter Cathedral
ISCA ENSEMBLE Musical Director Roger Hendy Leader Antony Clements Khachaturian - Adagio from Spartacus Hummel - Trumpet Concerto CAMERON TODD - trumpet Vaughan Williams - London Symphony Written shortly before the start of the First World War (in which Vaughan Williams served), the London Symphony was dedicated to the composer George Butterworth, whose life was cut tragically short in the war and who had first suggested to Vaughan Williams that he write a symphony; We were talking together one day recalled Vaughan Williams when he said in his gruff, abrupt manner: You know, you ought to write a symphony. When listening to the piece it is probably worth remembering that London then was quite different to London now. It was the centre of Empire, and a busy, dirty, noisy place, but it was also without todays urban sprawl, with the countryside on the doorstep and with transport dominated by horsepower rather than the car. The London Symphony gives us a wonderful glimpse of both sides of the capital of the time.

Sound of The Sirens

Sound of The Sirens

23 May 2025 - 5 Dec 2025

Exeter-based duo Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood dovetail beautifully on their debut album, For All Our Sins, a beguiling acoustic pop collection replete with lyrical sensibility on tracks like the first single, Smokescreen (“Living beyond the darkness others create for us, and growing into something positive”), The Circus (“When everyone wants something from you, who can you trust?”) and Mr Wilson (“The chemistry of a new relationship, unsure of where it is going, but knowing that you want more from it”). Already championed by Chris Evans – who declared himself “blown away” when he heard Sound of the Sirens for the first time – they’re certain to broaden a burgeoning fan base on the back of For All Our Sins. It’s a fan base built up not just over several sublime EP self-releases – but also through their live shows, which combine a natural facility for connecting with their audiences and unforgettable performances predicated on energy, warmth, humour and, above all, real conviction.

Onwards and Upwards Tour

8 May 2025 - 29 May 2025

This is just a fantastic tour for those who want an in depth introduction to the Cathedral. Firstly, we explore the Cathedral floor where we see the best of the medieval building in all its splendour before heading up to the Roof to see the space that was never meant for the public. We climb high above the Nave, walking along the vaulted ceiling and see the racking that could have resulted the complete destruction of the roof; we see the lead room, where smelting took place, before moving to the bell-ringing chamber. Stepping through a Norman window into the flag room we ascend, weather permitting, the Romanesque North Tower which has some of the best views over Exeter and beyond. At two and a half hours this is our longest tour and just brilliant value. During December, see unmatched ariel views of the Christmas market from the North Tower! Unfortunately, there is no disabled access on this tour owing to the steps. You must be able to walk unaided at floor level.
