Sam Michael: Worlds Oldest Man

9 Oct 2026 - 9 Oct 2026

Swindon's own Sam Michael brings his debut solo show 'World's Oldest Man' to Swindon Arts Centre. What life advice did the Guinness World Records’ Oldest Man give Sam Michael — and why did it make him rethink everything from love, to health, and Butlins Big Weekenders? Blurb (long): What life advice did the Guinness World Records’ Oldest Man give Sam Michael — and why did it make him rethink everything from love, to his health, to Butlins Big Weekenders? Forever failing to live in the moment, this lad-turned-tired-dad takes a hilarious, nostalgic look at missing his chance to seize the day in youth — less Carpe Diem, more It can wait until tomorrow (Potest donec cras!) — and his increasingly tragic attempts to make up for it before he hits 40. The World’s Oldest Man is Sam Michael’s debut solo show: warm, self-deprecating, and packed with relatable regret. Chortle calls it “An enjoyable hour in easy-going company” and “Cheekily self-deprecating... engagingly told by a natural, relaxed performer. Sam Michael is fast becoming one of the most exciting voices on the UK comedy circuit. With performances described as a “comedy masterclass” on BBC Bristol, he has also supported Al Murray, Dom Joly, Matt Richardson, and others on their national tours.

Tom Gilbey: Absolute Filth

6 Jul 2026 - 26 Sept 2026

Tom Gilbey is an award-winning wine expert, marathon-runner, and now author, with a career that has seen him taste, sell, spill and celebrate wine for over 30 years. He first caught the wine bug as a child, roaming around his grandfather’s château in Bordeaux, and by 23 he was already making the stuff himself. Since then, he’s done just about everything in wine - from winemaker to merchant to now running his own company, Tom Gilbey Wine. Tom’s mission has always been simple: to get people drinking better wine without needing to remortgage their house. After being shoved into an ice bath by his son Fred (to prove just how cold white wine should be), Tom stumbled into viral fame. His videos, demonstrating equal parts passion, humour and common sense, have been seen by millions, and his online community now tops 850,000 followers worldwide. With his trademark mix of enthusiasm, knowledge and mischief, Tom has carved out a new role as the most entertaining, refreshing voice in wine today: proving, once and for all, that wine should be about joy, not jargon.
Mike Sanchez

Mike Sanchez

26 Jul 2026 - 30 Jul 2026

British singer and pianist Mike Sanchez is one of the most exciting and charismatic performers in the world of rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll. His indelible image as a frenetic front man, pumping powerful boogie-woogie from the piano in a soaking suit, has won him fans from all over the world and attracted a following from many famous rock and blues legends who have lined up to work with him. Mike Sanchez was born in London to Spanish parents in 1964. At the age of eleven, his family moved to Worcestershire in the West Midlands where Mike took up the piano, developing a strong love for 1950s' American roots music through his high school years. As a teenager he taught himself guitar and formed The Rockets, a rockabilly trio. Shortly after, Mike was introduced to former Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and Steve Gibbons' multi-instrumentalist Andy Silvester by Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant, which led to the founding of the Big Town Playboys in 1984, specialising in authentic post-war Rhythm & Blues.
Brain Fools: Balance

Brain Fools: Balance

12 Jul 2026 - 12 Jul 2026

“Balance: Balancing Secrets. Juggling Trust.” Two performers, two steel beer kegs, and a path of empty glass bottles. In Balance, Brainfools transforms this vintage confinement into a breathtaking playground. Stripping away traditional circus apparatus, the duo utilises a landscape of "found objects": heavy industrial kegs, a rickety wooden plank, and fragile glass bottles. Through a seamless fusion of fluid choreography and high-stakes partner acrobatics, they reclaim these items, transforming them from static stock into instruments of connection. What starts as a wary standoff melts into a high-energy game of risk and reliance. Witness a visual feast of resilience as they toss heavy weights with effortless grace, climb shifting towers, and navigate a nerve-wracking path atop glass bottles. At its heart, Balance is a life-affirming story about how we support each other when the ground feels shaky—proving that even strangers can find equilibrium when the world tips over.

Agile Rabbit: To Lose A War: Jon Lee Anderson In Conversation
The acclaimed author and New Yorker writer is live in conversation about his new book, ‘To Lose a War’, with the celebrated human rights lawyer Samantha Knights KC. Jon Lee Anderson first reported from Afghanistan in the late 1980s, covering the US-backed mujahideen’s insurrection against the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul. Within days of the 9/11 attacks, he was again on the ground as an early eyewitness to the new war launched by the US against the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. At the time, the American military had prevailed on the battlefield, and the newfound peace seemed to offer a precious space for Afghan society to restore itself and to forge a democratic future. But all was not well: Osama bin Laden was still in hiding, the Taliban were stealthily reorganizing for a comeback, and the United States was about to turn its attention to Iraq. ‘To Lose a War’ collects Anderson’s writing from Afghanistan over a near-quarter-century span, offering a chronological account of a monumental tragedy as it unfolds. The colossal waste, missed signals, and wishful thinking that characterized the twenty-year arc of the US-led war in Afghanistan have consecrated it as one of the greatest foreign policy failures of the modern era, and a bellwether of a larger American imperial decline.

Anthony Gomes

Anthony Gomes

19 Jul 2026 - 25 Jul 2026

With a guitar slung over his shoulder and the amps turned up full tilt, Anthony Gomes electrifies blues and rock at a 21st century crossroads of his own. The Canadian vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and producer wails with all the force of a hurricane in the Mississippi Delta and enough fret-burning fireworks to leave his strings in flames. Over the years, he’s toppled the Billboard Blues Chart at #1, earned the endorsement of legends such as B.B. King, tallied tens of millions of streams, and packed shows on multiple continents. In April 2025, Anthony Gomes is back with his much-anticipated 14th studio album, Praise the Loud, set for release on Rat Pak Records. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, he fell in love with music as a kid, listening to everyone from Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix to Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen. At 14 years old, Anthony gravitated to the guitar and his relationship with the instrument was born. After grinding it out, his chops caught the attention of B.B. King’s bus driver at a jam night. Blown away, the driver introduced him to B.B. who invited him to open up a string of tour dates in 2005. Gaining invaluable knowledge from “The King,” he went on to share the stage with the likes of Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and more. Along the way, his concert attendees have included Academy® Award winner Morgan Freeman, John Goodman, and Vince Vaughn as well as Eric Clapton, to name a few.
Tom McRae

Tom McRae

2 Oct 2026 - 1 Nov 2026

British singer-songwriter Tom Mcrae, along with his regular touring musicians ‘The Standing Band’, has been quietly moving up the ranks of the most respected songwriters in the world today after releasing 7 critically acclaimed studio albums over the last 15 years and writing for a variety of artists and singers. Mcrae’s eponymous debut album in 2000 was nominated for a The Mercury Prize, a Q Magazine Award, and a Brit, and the subsequent two years of touring cemented his reputation as one the most entertaining and powerful artists touring today. Mcrae’s second album, Just Like Blood, released to wide acclaim, with every track being licensed for TV and film use, his style of music fitting perfectly the darker output of LA’s film studios. Since then, Essex-born Mcrae has released five more albums, relocated internationally three times and set up his own label Buzztree Studios in Cornwall- and there’s no sign that he’s going to be slowing down anytime soon. Mcrae and his tour mates, The Standing Band, a collection of incredible musicians and loyal friends, released their latest record ‘Did I Sleep and Miss The Boarder’ this Autumn. The album and its accompanying tour have further added to the cult that is rapidly springing up around this talented and dedicated artist and his ragtag band. For an artist working in a genre often considered by the music press to be ‘sensitive and self-indulgent’, Mcrae possesses the talent to blow the roof off a venue with his passionate performances, as well as the innate ability forge a strong humorous bond with his audience.

Bruce Asbestos: Bootleg Shreg 2

Bruce Asbestos: Bootleg Shreg 2

4 Jun 2026 - 20 Jun 2026

Exeter Phoenix is pleased to present Bootleg Shreg 2, a solo exhibition by Bruce Asbestos. It features paintings, inflatable sculpture and digital artworks that explore the evolving world of Shreg. Shreg is a mutating green cartoon character – an amalgam of well-known green characters from recent and more traditional pop culture. At its core, the exhibition explores how characters are generated and develop over time into icons, think of Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in Steamboat Willy in 1929, or the rough first Simpsons episode from 1989, and their commercialisation through reproduction in different media and merchandise. Meanwhile, it also muses on how developments in AI might erode human creative activity, authenticity, and visual expression – even make large swathes of it redundant entirely. Shreg can be seen as a vehicle to combine the best qualities of popular green characters, like Yoda, The Grinch, Yoshi, Elphaba, or Luigi – even the Jolly Green Giant and the pagan Green Man. A tribute to their strength, wisdom, sharp wit, love of adventure, unwavering determination to overcome challenges or to protect their loved ones. Whether appearing as a giant inflatable, a backdrop painting or a slick, digital render, he embodies the spirit of the sequel and the second chance, celebrates both pop culture and counterculture, he represents the othering of outsiders, misfits, Luddites and artists, and recognises their ongoing value to all of us in contemporary society. Through Shreg, Bruce Asbestos pokes at morphing ideas around creative authenticity with a subversive nod to ideas of the illicit bootleg version or the ‘knocked-off’ derivative of officially sanctioned intellectual property. He considers how in an age hurtling towards AI generated perfection, the rough-and-ready, hand-built, sketched out, or flawed rendering may accrue more cultural and creative value. And how long it will be for ever more sophisticated software to seamlessly replicate and absorb these qualities too.

Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand Up Years

18 Jun 2026 - 13 Dec 2026

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic as he takes his brand-new show on the road this autumn. So, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years, won 8 awards for performing, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4), written 6 books and 5 play scripts, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, sued the police (and won) 3 times, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right, there’s more, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So, let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at. This is a taster menu of political and personal mayhem, jokes, rants and a state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the hell is going on’ into a cogent evening of stand-up.

The History of Mermaids, Sea Spirits & Women
Dive beneath the surface of mermaid lore, tracing their long histories and what they may reveal about wider society. Followed by Q&A. Mermaids and sea creatures of various kinds have existed in legends and myths from coastal areas all over the world. They are often, though not always, female, and their gender also performs an ambiguous role in relation to human models of femininity, womanhood, and heterosexuality; mermaids, selkies, and female sea creatures can uncannily be familiar and unfamiliar, charming and repulsive, caring and deadly. While the female sea spirits’ elusiveness is in common with many supernatural monsters, it also reflects a double set of anxieties about Women and Nature, and, particularly, the marine world, where both resist definition and control by patriarchal and western anthropocentric frames of mind. Dr Monica Germanà is a Reader in Gothic and Contemporary Studies at the University of Westminster and co-president of the International Gothic Association. She is a leading authority on the Gothic imagination - particularly the ways gender, identity, and the uncanny intersect in literature and culture.

Sam Carter Sings Nic Jones

Sam Carter Sings Nic Jones

24 Sept 2026 - 24 Sept 2026

A live celebration of Nic Jones’ music, performed by BBC Folk Award winner Sam Carter. There are few folk singers as revered as the great Nic Jones. A towering figure of the English folk revival, his emotive singing and groundbreaking guitar style continue to inspire generations of musicians and listeners. His masterpiece Penguin Eggs remains a touchstone album, treasured more than forty years on. In 1982, just two years after the album’s release, Nic’s career was cut short by a devastating car accident. Yet his influence endures, shaping generations of folk musicians too young to have seen him perform in his prime. Among them is BBC Folk Award-winning singer and guitarist Sam Carter. Hailed by Jon Boden (Bellowhead) as ‘the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation,’ Sam first immersed himself in Nic’s recordings as a young player. His faithful rendition of Canadee-i-o went on to attract over 115,000 views on YouTube and led to an unforgettable invitation to perform alongside Nic himself at Sidmouth Folk Festival in 2010 — Nic’s first public performance in 28 years. Sam has since recorded Nic’s Ruins By The Shore and was chosen as Nic’s guitar double in the BBC4 documentary The Enigma of Nic Jones. Now, for one season only, Sam brings Nic’s timeless arrangements back to the stage in a heartfelt celebration. Ballads and Songs: Sam Carter sings Nic Jones is a one-off chance to hear songs from the back catalogue of one of folk music’s most influential voices, faithfully recreated by one of contemporary folk’s brightest talents.

Baskery

11 Nov 2026 - 22 Nov 2026

The three sisters can't recall when or why they started playing, the music’s always just been there. In their late teens, the sisters joined forces with their dad, who for decades was a one man band playing old blues and country tunes for a living. This foundation of classic "roots music and Americana" settled in their hearts, but also awoke the urge of breaking the rules of traditional music. Baskery is a band built on what three people can do together and it's all about turning the music on its head, blending the straightforwardness of punk with the subtlety of singer/ songwriting. The first album, "Fall Among Thieves" (2008) was recorded in Stockholm, co-produced by Lasse Mårtén (Pink, 'Peter, Bjorn and John', Kelly Clarkson, Lykke Li, Primal Scream ). "New Friends" (2011) the follow up, the band referred to it as the "gypsy album" since it was mainly tracked on the road in various hotel rooms and band apartments, then mixed in Berlin by Blackpete (Depeche Mode, Joe Jackson, Peter Fox). As a contrast to the first two albums which took several months to make, the third one "Little Wild Life" (2013) was recorded during ten days in an old dance studio converted to a studio in former east Berlin, co-produced by Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, J. Roddy Walston, Wargirl). All three albums received great acclaim by the press and are released in numerous countries. The releases in combination with relentless touring have given the band a reputation as one of the music scene's most noticeable live acts.
Damian Lewis

Damian Lewis

9 Jun 2026 - 30 Oct 2026

Damian has played the classical guitar since he was 13-years-old. Quickly though, suspecting that he might be the “Second Elvis,” he graduated to the steel string acoustic so that he could sing Elvis in the mirror without fear of interruption. Busking in London and continental Europe through his early twenties, the rent money started coming in from acting and the guitar was parked up as a hobby until the time of CoVid lockdown and quarantine. The busking experience has stayed with Damian ever since and is reflected in his debut album. Meeting with various London-based musicians, including Giacomo Smith, Damian wrote songs and found himself in the recording studio cutting tracks that will be released on his debut album titled, “Mission Creep.” The album will be out June 16, 2023. His band of five with jazz roots has a bluesy sound and the album is described as a thoughtful collection of rootsy, rock and jazz-tinged songs that reveal a deep love of music and a deep need to communicate.
Ellie Gowers

Ellie Gowers

6 Jun 2026 - 26 Nov 2026

Since emerging on the UK folk scene with her 2022 debut album Dwelling by the Weir, Ellie Gowers has captivated audiences with songs rooted in folklore, ecology and the nuanced stories of her hometown, Warwick. Lauded by The Guardian as 'full of delicacy, precision and gentle delight,' the album established her as a compelling new presence on the UK touring circuit. Ellie joins us this autumn as part of her UK tour, celebrating the release of an extended edition of her celebrated 2024 EP - You The Passenger. This expanded release builds on the critical success of the original EP, which earned national airplay on BBC Radio 2 (Mark Radcliffe), BBC 6 Music (Lauren Laverne's Fantastic Beats), and RADMAC, alongside the KLOF premiere of her video A Moment and multiple major playlist features. Inspired by the likes of MIPSO and Jeff Buckley, Ellie’s new material sees her pushing into more emotionally spacious and contemporary territory - while retaining the grounded storytelling that first brought her acclaim with 2022’s Dwelling by the Weir. These songs explore the aftermath of life on the road: themes of absence, longing, and emotional duality woven through rich acoustic textures and lyrical craft.
Ghosts, Ghouls & Spirits Of Medieval Britain
Why were people in medieval Britain so fascinated by ghosts and spirits? And what did these stories really mean? With Q&A. Medieval writings are full of ghosts, demons, and strange beings said to haunt forests, rivers, and villages. These stories weren’t just for entertainment. They helped people make sense of death, fear, and the unknown. They also reflected tensions between old pagan beliefs and newer Christian ideas, as well as the risks of life beyond the safety of the village. In this talk, we’ll explore how supernatural stories shaped the way people understood their world, and how they were used to support or challenge religious and social authority. Looking back at these beliefs helps us see how fear and storytelling have always been part of human life. Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and History at the University of Exeter, specialising in the medieval supernatural. Her research focuses on topics including prophecy, magic, demons, and Arthurian literature. Presented by Seed Talks This is an 18+ event

Daniel Kitson - Thrum

Daniel Kitson - Thrum

16 Sept 2026 - 18 Nov 2026

There’s the sound of somewhere else and the permanence of a plant pot and the ubiquity of a phrase and the heartbreaking brevity of a very long time. There’s figs and worms and an old dog rejecting a blanket. There’s a woman, on a train, wearing a badge. There’s the first beep of a smoke alarm and there’s a daffodil in December and there’s the condition of fruit. There’s a hand in bed and there’s stuff on the stairs and there’s a mark on my jumper and there’s a massive tree in storage on a farm in Kent. There’s nothing to say and there’s the thought of rotting and there’s the name of a feeling and there’s the smell of tobacco. There’s the twelfth floor of a hotel and the far end of a platform at Tamworth train station. There’s a duty to act and there’s a resistance to growth and there’s a new place up the road and there’s a completely redundant volume control. There’s a toilet in Hong Kong and a coffee shop in Melbourne and the passage of light through a building and deliberately making things much more difficult than they actually need to be. And. There’s music, more or less throughout, at least two funny voices and upwards of three jokes.
