Later the same year they became the first act to release an LP, Valentyne Suite, on the collectible Vertigo record label who went on to release records by Black Sabbath and Status Quo amongst others. Colosseum went on to release a further two LP's before splitting in 1971. Band members went on to join bands such as Humble Pie, Atomic Rooster, Greenslade and more.

Arctic Numpties are Yorkshire's very own tribute to the Arctic Monkeys, with roots to the very same places as the original band. The 'Numpties' give audiences the ultimate Arctic Monkeys experience, exactly replicating the Sheffield icons' sound, look, guitars and excessive use of hair gel. Covering everyone's favourites from all six albums, the Arctic Numpties are a must see tribute band for any Monkeys fan. The band were originally founded by 17 year olds Ben Curry and Jack Walker in 2019. The pair originally started playing Monkeys songs together in their bedrooms before forming the lineup later that year with Tom Smart and Nathan Mabey. Ben plays guitar and keys, as well as fronting the band on vocals, imitating Alex Turner. Jack is lead guitarist of the band, their very own Jamie Cook. Tom, other wise known as 'Sheepy' is on the drums, with likeness to Matt Helders, he helps with backing vocals along with Nick O'Malley, or Nathan who plays the bass.

Popular monthly social photography meet-up, with training and exhibition opportunities. The Exeter Phoenix Camera Group is a monthly social meet-up for anyone keen on photography who has some experience, or may have been on the beginners course and would like to keep in contact with like minded enthusiasts. Prior to joining the group, participants should be able to use the manual features of their camera, off the automatic mode. As a group you will be spending some time taking pictures together during the session on a particular theme. There will also be an opportunity to share images taken between sessions and any projects participants are individually working on. In this two day hands-on workshop you will use stop motion animation techniques to design, plan and shoot a short film using your favourite Lego from home. Under the supervision of our professional animation and filmmaking tutors you will create a set for your very own story and bring your characters to life using visual and sound effects. The final films will be uploaded to our Youtube account after the workshop for you to share with your family and friends! Please bring with you any Lego you have from home, including mini figures. Graham has had over 16 years experience working in the 2D children’s Television animation industry and has worked on a number of shows made by Honeycomb Animation and King Rollo Films including Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, Binka, Poppy Cat, Funky Valley and Funky Town. Both Funky shows were animated in a digital cut-out style.

"It's back again! Exeter Phoenix’s famous Summer Film School returns, created in partnership with newly award-winning film and theatre company Four of Swords (thanks to their entry to the 48 Hour Film Challenge for Two Short Nights, featuring alumni from past film schools!) This year, Summer Film School will run from Monday 24th to Friday 28th August. The week-long workshop is aimed at young creatives aged 10 to 17 years old. It offers the chance to work with skilled filmmakers to create an amazing short film from scratch in just one week. Activities include: Writing / Story-boarding / Devising Set / Costume / Make-up Design Acting! Prop & Model making Camera Operation Green Screen Work / Animation You don’t need to be interested in ALL of these areas, but everyone will have the chance to try everything. Mostly, of course, it will be exhausting, enormous fun! This year’s film school will be held at Columbjohn Farm, an idyllic location on the edge of the Killerton Estate (Rewe, Exeter EX5 4ER). Each day will run from 9am – 4pm, with a dedicated lunch break. Our theme for 2026 will be creating a Devon-based kaiju-style monster flick, taking inspiration from Godzilla, King Kong, War of the Worlds and Ultraman. The final film will premiere at Exeter Phoenix, where parents, family and friends will be able to see the finished film on the big screen. Spaces are limited. If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. They are often, though not always, female, and their gender also performs an ambiguous role in relation to human models of femininity, womanhood, and heterosexuality; mermaids, selkies, and female sea creatures can uncannily be familiar and unfamiliar, charming and repulsive, caring and deadly. While the female sea spirits’ elusiveness is in common with many supernatural monsters, it also reflects a double set of anxieties about Women and Nature, and, particularly, the marine world, where both resist definition and control by patriarchal and western anthropocentric frames of mind. Dr Monica Germanà is a Reader in Gothic and Contemporary Studies at the University of Westminster and co-president of the International Gothic Association. She is a leading authority on the Gothic imagination - particularly the ways gender, identity, and the uncanny intersect in literature and culture.

The show takes us on Hobs’ journey from a passing interest in badgers, to an obsession that leads to him standing in a field looking at a caged, frightened badger caught up in the misinformation of the bovine TB debate. We’ll learn about the European badger and its dachshund nemesis, the presidential American badger, the world-famous internet sensation that is the honey badger and many more. Guideline 16+.

Finnish quartet The Rasmus formed in Helsinki in 1995 while frontman Lauri Ylönen, bassist Eero Heinonen, guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi, and drummer Jarno Lahti were all still in school. Lahti left after only a year, replaced by Janne Heiskanen, and the band went on to release their funk-rock influenced debut Peep in 1996. By the following year, they’d already won an EMMA (the Finnish Grammys) for Best Newcomer.

The three sisters can't recall when or why they started playing, the music’s always just been there. In their late teens, the sisters joined forces with their dad, who for decades was a one man band playing old blues and country tunes for a living. This foundation of classic "roots music and Americana" settled in their hearts, but also awoke the urge of breaking the rules of traditional music. Baskery is a band built on what three people can do together and it's all about turning the music on its head, blending the straightforwardness of punk with the subtlety of singer/ songwriting. The first album, "Fall Among Thieves" (2008) was recorded in Stockholm, co-produced by Lasse Mårtén (Pink, 'Peter, Bjorn and John', Kelly Clarkson, Lykke Li, Primal Scream ). "New Friends" (2011) the follow up, the band referred to it as the "gypsy album" since it was mainly tracked on the road in various hotel rooms and band apartments, then mixed in Berlin by Blackpete (Depeche Mode, Joe Jackson, Peter Fox). As a contrast to the first two albums which took several months to make, the third one "Little Wild Life" (2013) was recorded during ten days in an old dance studio converted to a studio in former east Berlin, co-produced by Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, J. Roddy Walston, Wargirl). All three albums received great acclaim by the press and are released in numerous countries. The releases in combination with relentless touring have given the band a reputation as one of the music scene's most noticeable live acts.

Damian has played the classical guitar since he was 13-years-old. Quickly though, suspecting that he might be the “Second Elvis,” he graduated to the steel string acoustic so that he could sing Elvis in the mirror without fear of interruption. Busking in London and continental Europe through his early twenties, the rent money started coming in from acting and the guitar was parked up as a hobby until the time of CoVid lockdown and quarantine. The busking experience has stayed with Damian ever since and is reflected in his debut album. Meeting with various London-based musicians, including Giacomo Smith, Damian wrote songs and found himself in the recording studio cutting tracks that will be released on his debut album titled, “Mission Creep.” The album will be out June 16, 2023. His band of five with jazz roots has a bluesy sound and the album is described as a thoughtful collection of rootsy, rock and jazz-tinged songs that reveal a deep love of music and a deep need to communicate.

Since emerging on the UK folk scene with her 2022 debut album Dwelling by the Weir, Ellie Gowers has captivated audiences with songs rooted in folklore, ecology and the nuanced stories of her hometown, Warwick. Lauded by The Guardian as 'full of delicacy, precision and gentle delight,' the album established her as a compelling new presence on the UK touring circuit. Ellie joins us this autumn as part of her UK tour, celebrating the release of an extended edition of her celebrated 2024 EP - You The Passenger. This expanded release builds on the critical success of the original EP, which earned national airplay on BBC Radio 2 (Mark Radcliffe), BBC 6 Music (Lauren Laverne's Fantastic Beats), and RADMAC, alongside the KLOF premiere of her video A Moment and multiple major playlist features. Why were people in medieval Britain so fascinated by ghosts and spirits? And what did these stories really mean? With Q&A. Medieval writings are full of ghosts, demons, and strange beings said to haunt forests, rivers, and villages. These stories weren’t just for entertainment. They helped people make sense of death, fear, and the unknown. They also reflected tensions between old pagan beliefs and newer Christian ideas, as well as the risks of life beyond the safety of the village. In this talk, we’ll explore how supernatural stories shaped the way people understood their world, and how they were used to support or challenge religious and social authority. Looking back at these beliefs helps us see how fear and storytelling have always been part of human life. Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and History at the University of Exeter, specialising in the medieval supernatural. There’s nothing to say and there’s the thought of rotting and there’s the name of a feeling and there’s the smell of tobacco. There’s the twelfth floor of a hotel and the far end of a platform at Tamworth train station. There’s a duty to act and there’s a resistance to growth and there’s a new place up the road and there’s a completely redundant volume control. There’s a toilet in Hong Kong and a coffee shop in Melbourne and the passage of light through a building and deliberately making things much more difficult than they actually need to be. And. There’s music, more or less throughout, at least two funny voices and upwards of three jokes.

Alan Fletcher has worked as an actor and musician for more than 45 years in Australia and the United Kingdom. As an actor, Alan is a household name because of his portrayal of Dr Karl Kennedy for 30 years on the iconic Australian drama Neighbours. As a musician, Alan has performed as a front man for rock band Waiting Room that played a weekly residency in Melbourne for twelve years and toured the UK ten times over eight years. In 2020 Alan moved away from Rock and commenced a solo career in Americana/ A lt - Country and Folk. Collaborating with producers Lachlan Bryan and Damian Cafarella Alan’s releases include the EP ‘Dispatches in 2023, an album ‘The Point’ in 2024 and his latest album ‘Back to School’ in February 2026 . One of the most in demand and distinctive MCs on the planet, Levy has been tearing up events for the last three decades, bringing an unparalleled energy to his sets. Born Paul Levy in Central Middlesex Hospital NW10 London, England in 1971, Levy grew up in the vibrant Harlesden and Wembley area for most of his early years, surrounded by different West Indian, European, Asian and African influences. He grew up in a community heavily influenced by reggae music and black culture and from an early age, a certain militancy was instilled in him along with a love and respect for rebel music. He was also inspired by his big brother Winston Irie who had a vast record collection of music from ska to rock steady, calypso to soul, hip hop and reggae that gave Levy a steady diet of music through his adolescent years. Since then General Levy has gone on to work with various producers such as Sly & Robbie and Sting International, Shaggy, Steelie & Cleevie, Artful Dodger, Jetstar, Ajang, Joe Grind, Gussie P, Stingray, Heartical Records, to name but a few. We will be continuing our exploration of the art of the 20th century drawing out key themes and referencing some lesser known works including a focus on South American artists. This course is suitable for both those who completed the preceding course as well as for those with no previous experience. Over the 5-week course you will create your own notebook building a personal record in response to presentations discussions and hands-on creative activities. All materials will be provided.
