Chris Wood

Chris Wood

8 May 2025 - 5 Oct 2025

Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the unofficial history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as Anon. On stage Chris has the air of a craftsman who no longer needs to be precious about his art. Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem.

Chin Music has two meanings. One is idle talk. The other is a brushback throw in baseball or cricket to intimidate the batter. Both describe Rich Hall's comedy. Idle but intimidating. Sharp, quick, splenetic, and sublimely improvisational. If youve never seen him, you need to hustle down to The Falcon Hotel and grab a seat because he never disappoints. Ever. Unreserved seating. Jo Caulfield

Jo Caulfield

18 May 2025 - 18 May 2025

'The Funny Thing About Death' is an hilarious memoir of two unconventional girls growing up in the 1970s. They didnt fit in at the Air Force bases they were raised on or the strict convent boarding school they were sent to. The Air Force was obsessed with communists and the nuns were obsessed with the Virgin Mary, neither of which was of interest to Jo or Annie. Like her stand-up, Jo Caulfield's caustic wit and razor-sharp observations make her account of life with, and without her big sister, even in the worst of times, as entertaining as it is touching and relatable. Audiences also get to know and enjoy Jo's sister Annie, Annie was a writer and a big influence on Jo's life. She talks with hilarious honesty about the shared experience of grief. There will be a Q&A section at the end which is particularly special given the subject matter. We are now, most of us, in the grief club and know that it is part of life and also what a great comfort it is to laugh and share with other members of the club. Comedian Jo Caulfield has appeared on TV shows such as Have I Got News For You, The Royal Variety Performance and was a winner of Richard Osman's House of Games. (She didnt know she was that competitive). Quotes about 'The Funny Thing About Death' Graham Norton "There's so much I'd like to say about this book, it's a wildly satisfying and moving read. Big laughs combined with rare insight and heartbreak. The writing is so readable and unfussy and the humour is done so well, never forced or shoe horned. I loved this special book. JENNY ECLAIR Warm and tender, frequently very funny and ultimately incredibly moving tale of siblings and cancer. Without a shred of mawkishness, the book manages to move seamlessly from funny to tragic. A deeply personal and yet universal look at loving and losing a sister. JO BRAND Jo navigates the treacherous waters of bereavement and its unpredictable behaviour and emotions in this open, funny, sad, wry and highly readable gem. A funny and sad literary lifebelt for the bereaved. Quotes about Jo Caulfield Sharp witted urban comedy that goes down a treat. Like a sociology textbook but with jokes The Times Jo delivers an hour of rock-solid stand-up, with flashes of viciousness that particularly delight the room British Comedy Guide Unreserved Seating. Bar/Food available Cash Raffle to support Bude Lit Fest
Living Room Theatre presents 'THE END IS IN THE BEGINNING'
'In this intimate 80 minute 2-hander performance, our approach to both the comic and the tragic sides of Beckett's work will give audiences a new way to experience his language. Whether youre exploring this Nobel Prize winner's writing for the first time, or building on a body of Beckett knowledge, this theatrical showcase is an encounter not to be missed. Expect a mystery phone call, impossible-to-remove boots, the horrors of home life, a glass of Jamesons, surreal radio broadcasts, a bevvy of bananas, a bicycle from boyhood, classic clowning, beguiling stillness, and audience up on stage. All encased within hilarious, poignant, possibly challenging but always compelling drama!' Sarah & Philip embody the endeavours of many of Beckett's absurd and tragic characters, in their struggle to exist and to remember. Most of all, in their struggle out of silence, towards speaking. Structured as a fragmentary progression, its an entertaining celebration of the act of trying again, failing again, failing better. Performed by Philip Robinson & Sarah White Words by Samuel Beckett Directed by Nikki Sved Creative Direction by Philip, with Sarah & Nikki Costume Design by Lindy Yellowlees Music/Sound by Philip Hear Philip, one of the actors, speak about the show: https://youtu.be/PW9VGrHiv9Afeature=shared Duration: 80 mins + 15 mins interval High quality food/bar/accomodation available at The Falcon Hotel Info about the company: Sarah White - Performer Sarah is an Exeter based performer, producer and Co-Artistic Director of Four of Swords, a theatre company specialising in creating immersive adaptations of classic stories in strange spaces. As such she can often be found hiding in the dark from audiences in caves, quarries, forests and empty office buildings. Recent screen acting credits include the BBCs 'Beyond Paradise' and Cornish horror 'The Cull' where she is type cast as an ancient demon. She's spent the last few summers on the road with Common Players producing and performing in open-air, rural tours of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'The Tuck Inn' and teaching drama to students in Greece and Shanghai. Philip Robinson - Performer, Music/Sound Philip has spent 45 years creating performances internationally, particularly in non-traditional settings: living rooms (where he toured Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape), department stores, buses, lifts, gardens and haunted houses. Most recent tours include Every Brilliant Thing - an audience participatory show about suicide, All Is Mended - a play uniting Shakespeare with real-life pandemic stories from residents of care homes, The Washing Machine Of Destiny - about life as someone who is neurodiverse. Philip is passionate about using the arts to grow and unite communities, working collaboratively to make issue-based shows involving people with a learning or physical disability, the homeless, refugees, and those living with mental health challenges. From Ireland to Iraq via Kosovo to Kidderminster. Nikki Sved - Director Nikki was the Artistic Director of contemporary storytellers Theatre Alibi for 28 years, until 2023 when she joined Exeter University's Drama Department, where she is a Lecturer. Her relationship with Theatre Alibi continues, as a Creative Advisor. During Nikki's time with the company, she directed numerous shows for audiences of all ages, including Why The Whales Came, which toured nationally and enjoyed a West End run; The Night Before Christmas, which was commissioned by the RSC, and also many shows which toured to tens of thousands of children in Devon Primary schools the work of which she is most proud. Living Room Theatre We are a long-lived ever-changing array of artists and performers, well-held by Philip. Touring shows into theatres yes but mostly into places not known for having theatre in. We like performing intimate shows that are funny and powerful, moving and surprising, which have something important to say. Sometimes scripted plays, and sometimes specially created by us for spaces, events, people. Theatre is for all.
