12 Silk Handkerchiefs

12 Silk Handkerchiefs

11 May 2025 - 11 May 2025

Honoured to bring to Filey with it's own great fishing heritage this inspiring tale of how one woman began a successful campaign to improve safely at sea. 12 Silk Handkerchiefs A song cycle by Reg Meuross and a multi media show about the Hull Triple Trawler Disaster of 1968 and the revolutionary Lillian Bilocca Acclaimed singer/songwriter Reg Meuross has joined artistic forces with author Brian W Lavery to present ´12 Silk Handkerchiefs´ which tells in music, narration and pictures the story of Hull's 1968 triple trawler disaster and subsequent uprising led by fighting fishwife Mrs Lillian Bilocca, calling for greater safety on the trawlers. The song cycle, written by Reg, is performed by himself alongside Hull musician Sam Martyn. The multi-media show includes never-seen-before images, TV, newsreel and radio archive from the time and a series of narrative links by Brian W Lavery from his book. In January and February 1968 three trawlers, the St Romanus, Kingston Peridot and Ross Cleveland sank in atrocious weather conditions within 3 weeks of each other. 58 men lost their lives and the Hessel Road community was torn apart. The miraculous survival of one man, Harry Eddom, mate of the Ross Cleveland, drew attention to this almost constantly grieving city and the incredibly dangerous industry where health and safety practices were less than basic. The uprising that followed, spearheaded by ´Big Lil´ and her ´Headscarf Revolutionaries´ and their tireless campaign, is now recognised as one of that century's most successful campaigns of civil disobedience. The result was new safety measures which saved thousands of lives in the decade ahead, at great personal cost to the campaigners (from blacklisting to death threats) before the industry itself went into decline. Reg said: In March 2017 I was invited to play a concert in Hull. I had already heard about Big Lil´ Bilocca and her fight in the late Sixties to pressure the Government into introducing much tighter safety after the triple trawler disaster of 1968 and I was drawn to find out more while I was there. My research led me to the book ´The Headscarf Revolutionaries´ by Brian W Lavery and to a meeting with Brian's friend, local musician the late Mick McGarry (who turned out to have been my support, along with Sam Martyn, at the gig Id just played). Together we went for an in-depth tour of the old fish docks. Mick also gave me a collection of local songs and Brian gave me a copy of his book. The detail in the book provided some really rich source material for a song cycle based on this fascinating and important period of British industrial history. Brian added, "I was greatly honoured when I heard the song cycle Reg had written. He is truly a gifted songwriter and it seemed obvious that we should work together on what became ´12 Silk Handkerchiefs´. The title comes from the fact that Lil's last action was to send her daughter to buy a set of handkerchiefs to give as gifts to those who had treated her is hospital before her death in 1988. Reg's music honours and complements the story of the Dark Winter that claimed so many of our brave trawler men. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a Meuross song must be worth so much more. With these six wonderful songs, this poet has re-cast a story that took me eighty-thousand words to tell.
Tim Tubbs - J.B.Priestley

Tim Tubbs - J.B.Priestley

10 May 2025 - 10 May 2025

Delighted to welcome the ever entertaining Tim Tubbs to Filey Literature Festival for one of his acclaimed talks,. His subject this time is the polymath Yorkshireman, J.B.Priestley. Priestley was an English novelist, playwright, screenwriter, broadcaster and social commentator. His Yorkshire background is reflected in much of his fiction, notably in The Good Companions (1929), which first brought him to wide public notice. Many of his plays are structured around a time slip, and he went on to develop a new theory of time, with different dimensions that link past, present and future. In 1940, he broadcast a series of short propaganda radio talks, which were credited with strengthening civilian morale during the Battle of Britain. In the following years his left-wing beliefs brought him into conflict with the government and influenced the development of the welfare state.

Recent discussion, academic publications and many of the national exhibitions relating to the Great War at sea have focussed on capital ships, Jutland and perhaps U-boats. Very little has been published about the crucial role played by fishermen, fishing vessels and coastal communities all round the British Isles. Yet fishermen and armed fishing craft were continually on the maritime front line throughout the conflict; they formed the backbone of the Auxiliary Patrol and were in constant action against-U-boats or engaged on unrelenting minesweeping duties. Approximately 3000 fishing vessels were requisitioned and armed by the Admiralty and more than 39,000 fishermen joined the Trawler Section of the Royal Naval Reserve. The class and cultural gap between working fishermen and many RN officers was enormous. This book examines the multifaceted role that fishermen and the fish trade played throughout the conflict. It examines the reasons why, in an age of dreadnoughts and other high-tech military equipment, so many fishermen and fishing vessels were called upon to play such a crucial role in the littoral war against mines and U-boats, not only around the British Isles but also off the coasts of various other theatres of war. It will analyse the nature of the fishing industry's war-time involvement and also the contribution that non-belligerent fishing vessels continued to play in maintaining the beleaguered nation's food supplies.
Anne & Charlotte Bronte on the Yorkshire Coast
The Brontë sisters Anne and Charlotte visited the Yorkshire Coast many times, including Scarborough, Bridlington, and Filey. Anne died in Scarborough in 1849 and is buried in St Mary's churchyard. Charlotte and Anne stayed at Wood's Lodgings in Scarborough. Anne's novels The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey were inspired by her time in Scarborough. Bridlington Charlotte's first holiday was in Bridlington in 1839. She traveled by train for the first time and saw the sea for the first time. Filey Charlotte retreated to Filey after returning from Scarborough alone and broken-hearted. She was alone with the sea, seagulls, and crashing waves. Other locations The Brontë sisters visited Easton House in 1839. They also visited other east coast resorts. The Brontë sisters loved the Yorkshire Coast. Charlotte's favorite was Filey.

A summer migrant to Europe from West Africa, the Little Tern is one of our most threatened and most captivating seabirds. This book is the story of one breeding season at the Beacon Ponds colony on the North Sea coast, near Spurn Point in East Yorkshire. In elegant and evocative prose it offers an intimate portrait of these endangered birds, covering everything from foraging and breeding to predators and conservation. The colony's small size means that it can be monitored, protected and documented in an unusual level of detail. Close observation of the birds behaviour and an in-depth knowledge of the natural history of their environment raise important questions about how and why we seek to preserve and protect species for whose decline we are ourselves largely responsible. A tight focus on the spectacular natural, geographical and cultural headland that is Spurn Point also provides new insights into the ecology of Little Terns. Covering the progress of the colony month by month, through an eventful spring and summer, Clinging to the Edge brings these charismatic and endearing birds vividly to life.
The Lost Notes

The Lost Notes

5 Sept 2025 - 5 Sept 2025

A Filey debut for this acclaimed band with Scottish troubadour Malcolm MacWatt opening up. The Lost Notes are a band born and based in the creatively fertile blaglands of Moseley, Birmingham UK. They write songs about things that matter. Like the perils of one night stands and plastic surgery, the plight of bankers, greaseballs, snakes, Greco-Roman health and safety failings, mules, mermaids and the downright miserable. The principal songwriters are Ben and Oli. Oli likes folk and Ben digs jazz. Both are stubborn. So each seeks to exert their own subtle influence on the music. The result is part folk with a drag of soul roots, a slug of gospel, or downright country with a thump of jazz around the edges. The band are: Ben Mills: vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica; Oli Jobes: lead guitar, vocals; Lucy Mills: vocals and, on a good day, cowbell. Steve Vantsis and Max Tomlinson ignore the prima donnas vying for attention out front and thump out driving rhythms on double bass and drums. They have built up a loyal fan base across the folk and festival circuit through performances at places such as Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Costa Festival, Portugal, Moseley Folk Festival, Birmingahm Symphony Hall, Bromsgrove Folk Festival, Beardy Folk Festival, The Glee Club, The Jam House, the MAC, Birmingham Conservatoire Theatre and folk clubs across the Midlands and beyond. They have recently released their critically acclaimed third album: Good Luck Shoes, which has been played on BBC Radio, was British Country Music Associations "Editors Choice" and Album of the Week on British Country Music Radio. They are currenlty touring the album and working on new material for the next one. As well as performances with the full band, Ben, Lucy and Oli also frequently perform as an acoustic trio at smaller clubs and house gigs. A highlightwere Moseley band The Lost Notes. Theydrew a huge crowd for their fast-paced set that was high on fun and audience engagement. Moseley Folk Festival Review An assured debut from the Moseley based country-pop band, stalwarts of the Birmingham live circuit, with a large and loyal fan base. Live shows are up-tempo joyous events, the love of the music and trust and affection between band members showing clearly through. The eleven original tracks are a quintessentially English take on country folk, sharing the melodic and commercial sensibilities of Hank Williams with the quirky Brit-pop of the Kinks, and more than a dash of hot club era gypsy swing a band that are highly recommended live. The Deep Dark Woods ( solo )

The Deep Dark Woods ( solo )

6 May 2025 - 18 May 2025

After a stunning show in Scarborough in May a,welcome return to the area for Deep Dark Woods solo ( Ryan Boldt ) To think of the Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in capital-T tradition, and that may be true, but now nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada's finest folk-roots ensembles, that tradition is one of their own invention. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn't take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading, working in the lineage of iconic singers like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko, and Jason Molina. Boldt, a relentless lifelong listener of music, says It's all I do. When I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest. Accordingly, his singing is full of highly emotive nuance and an elegant, relaxed precision that makes it seem downright effortless, a perfect vehicle for the band's particular brand of updated folk music. Fellow travellers like keyboard whiz Geoff Hilhorst, veteran drummer Mike Silverman, and Evan Cheadle round out the Deep Dark Woods unit, and they are often assisted by like-minded collaborators such as singer-songwriter Ellen Froese, Erik Nielsen, Leon Power, and the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. This crew creates a powerful combination and has amassed a pile of celebrated albums, EPs, and a host of nominations from music awards outfits from across the country. Together they recall classic units like The Band, mid-period Wilco, and American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, but also legendary late '60s UK groups like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and Steeleye Span. Which brings us to the Deep Dark Woods' latest album, Broadside Ballads, Vol.III. Intertwined amongst their albums of original material, Deep Dark Woods has been steadily building up a series of releases called Broadside Ballads, focusing on traditional Irish, English, and Scottish folk songs. It's a fitting tribute to the music that influenced Boldt's writing and singing since first forming the band, and like their forebears, Deep Dark Woods aims to take their own experiences of traditional music and create something new and vital. The songs in this collection mine some of the more brutal depths of human experience, touching on broken hearts, love, murder, and the act of leaving. Boldt notes that there are not too many jolly songs in there, but the album is not a dour affair, instead benefiting from tasteful, unstated arrangements and an organic, no- frills recording sound. The songs on Vol.III generously display The Deep Dark Woods' deep-seated links to the past while still sounding just like themselves. A brand new album of original music recorded by David Parry (Loving, Alice Phoebe Lou) will be released in 2025.
