Simon Evans: Have We Met?

Simon Evans: Have We Met?

7 May 2025 - 22 Mar 2026

Completing the Trilogy begun with Genius 2.0 and The Work of the Devil, Have We Met? finds Simon standing, like Ulysses in Tennyson’s famous verse, gazing out over the moaning deep and the twinkling rocks and wondering whether to seek a newer world? To smite the sounding furrows? To strive, to seek, and to find? Or whether in fact, to put the kettle on, crack open the Hobnobs and simply yield? Drawing on Joyce, Proust and the career of Philip Schofield to make sense of his own tangled past and possible future, Evans skilfully weaves comedy, pathos and narrowly averted cancellation into an unforgettable two hours of unique entertainment.

Public Service Broadcasting

Public Service Broadcasting

6 Aug 2025 - 6 Aug 2025

Public Service Broadcasting have been “teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future” for more than a decade now. 2013’s debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain used archival samples from the British Film Institute as audio-portals to the Battle of Britain, the summit of Everest and beyond. Two years later, The Race For Space used similar methods to laud the superpowers’ rivalry and heroism in orbit and on the moon. In 2017, joined by voices including Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield, Every Valley was a moving exploration of community and memory via the rise and fall of the British coal industry. Pointedly topical in its analyses, it reached number four on the UK charts. For their fourth album, Bright Magic (2021), the band take inspiration from Berlin: “It’s become an album about moving to Berlin to write an album about people who move to Berlin to write an album…”. Heralded as the band’s most varied and cerebral record, Bright Magic is an impressionist portrait of the city from the ground up, less linear and narrative than previous works, combining PSB’s use of electronics and surging guitar rock with sound samples collected in the city itself to realise the dreams of Berlin they’d constructed in their minds.

The Leopard in My House is proof that this leftie, working-class, Radio 4 favourite truly deserves his place in the UK comedy pantheon. Join multi award-winning, BAFTA-nominated writer and comedian Mark Steel for his new tour ‘The Leopard in My House’. The topic? His battle with throat cancer. A battle he is winning (thankfully) and which only his rapier wit could fashion a comedy tour show out of. Cancer has done nothing to dull Mark’s acute political observations or quash his “frankly bonkers” energy: you will laugh, you will cry, but you’ll laugh again, and again, and again. Mark Steel is best known for his critically-acclaimed BBC Radio 4 show Mark Steel’s in Town (now in its 13th series), as well as his hit podcast What The F★★★ Is Going On…?. He has presented the BAFTA-nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC Two, and is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News for You and BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz. Home Service

Home Service

24 Jul 2025 - 24 Jul 2025

Home Service arrives at Gala Durham with North-East native Bob Fox at the helm. Characterised by Graeme Taylor’s fiery lead guitar and a stirring brass section, the music of Home Service explores contemporary themes, often through historical settings, and crosses musical genres from folk and classical through to trenchant rock. Bob Fox joined Home Service in 2023 after John Tams retired and made his debut with the band at Broadstairs Folk Festival in 2023. Long regarded as one of the great voices of British folk song, Bob took the role of ‘Songman’ in the National Theatre’s highly successful West End production of War Horse and has embraced a brand new role in Home Service. Producing three albums in the mid-eighties, including the ground-breaking Alright Jack, Home Service headlined major festivals including Cambridge, Cropredy and Dranouter. They toured extensively, but found arguably their biggest audience when they provided music for Bill Bryden’s celebrated production of The Mysteries trilogy, which ran for many years at the National Theatre. The band made a dramatic return to prominence in 2011 with the best-selling Live 86 album and a string of major festival appearances, following which they won Best Live Act at the 2012 Radio 2 Folk Awards. Touring their new album, A Live Transmission, they blend tradition with pulsating folk rock and trenchant brass to create the unmistakable sound of Home Service.

Milton Jones: HA!milton

Milton Jones: HA!milton

3 May 2025 - 29 Nov 2025

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes... and there’s a bit about tomatoes. You might know him from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff. A whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense. Warning - contains jokes from the start.

Orchestra North East: Dvorak New World Symphony
Smetana: Vltava, (The Moldau), from Ma Vlast. Wieniawski: Violin Concerto no.2. Dvořák: Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’. Conductor: Maria Barbosa Aristizabel Soloist: Bradley Creswick Orchestra North East welcome Bradley Creswick once again as their soloist in the Concerto. Bradley needs no introduction to North East audiences, and Orchestra North East know the sparkling and virtuosic piece by Wieniawski is one of his personal favourites, adding a most enjoyable element to this Central-European themed concert. Smetana and Dvořák are of course the two most eminent Czech composers and the works Orchestra North East have chosen are probably their most famous. The tone poem Vltava is a beautifully crafted picture in music of a great river and whilst the subtitle of Dvořák’s symphony may suggest something different, it is widely acknowledged that the music, like much of what he wrote, was nonetheless rooted in the music of his homeland. The conductor for the afternoon will be Maria Barbosa Aristizabel, a very talented young conductor from Colombia. Maria stepped in, at very short notice, to conduct the Orchestra at a rehearsal in preparation for their concert in September 2024, and Orchestra North East are very pleased that she is able to return to work with them.

Sandi Toksvig - Friends of Dorothy

21 Sept 2025 - 27 Oct 2025

Come and join the comedian, broadcaster, campaigner (and tiny Danish beacon of hope) for an evening celebrating her love and passion for writers and books. A sell-out in 2024, this show is packed with fascinating stories, a lively Q&A and the much-contested 'Cleverest Person in the Room' game. Dive into Sandi 's extraordinary collection as she explores outrageous and bizarre titles such as 'The Beginners Guide to Sex in the Afterlife' and 'Cheese Problems Solved'. Marking the paperback publication of her Sunday Times Bestselling novel, Sandi's live shows are life-affirming, smart, and funny.
