NASUWT Riverside Band celebrate their 150th Anniversary Concert – Brass at it’s Best – with special guests The Black Dyke Band and guest soloist Euphonium Virtuoso David Childs. The concert will be conducted by Professor Nicholas Childs and Richard Marshall. Formed in 1875 in the former mining village of Pelton Fell, today the band still has a busy diary of engagements all across the UK. In recent years, the band has been a principal performer at the Durham International Brass Festival including a key role in the internationally renowned Miners Hymns performances in 2010 and 2014. In 2023 the band performed with Richard Hawley in Durham Cathedral and has been a major advocate of diverse music for brass bands. In 2024 they again performed in Durham Cathedral with Public Service Broadcasting, a concert which was awarded the North East Culture award for Best Performance in 2024. Also performing will be the Black Dyke Band – the most successful contesting band in the world, having won the European Championships thirteen times, the British Open no fewer than 30 times, and the National Championships of Great Britain 24 times. The band is also the most recorded band in the world with over 350 recordings and growing every year.

Trumpeter Graham Hardy is a familiar face to jazz fans in the North East as both bandleader (including the Northern Monkey Brass Band) and as sideman in numerous other groups based in the area (including the Sue Ferris Quintet, John Pope Quintet, the Ushaw Ensemble, and many more besides). Performing both standards and original music rooted in the jazz tradition, his all-new quartet features Ben Lawrence (piano), Andy Champion (double bass), and John Bradford (drums).

Ruth Lambert is a talented and versatile jazz singer based in the North East who has established herself in recent years as one of the UK’s most classy and distinctive jazz vocalists. Balancing a voice of warmth and maturity with spark and charisma, Ruth is in her element whether fronting a big band or working in a small band setting to create a more intimate vibe. For this concert she is joined by Alan Law (piano), Paul Grainger (bass), and Tim Johnston (drums).

This North-Eastern ensemble is co-led by the renowned jazz couple, Abbie Finn on drums and Harry Keeble on sax, also featuring hugely admired performers, John Pope on bass, and Dean Stockdale on keys. Their original compositions form a set of highly energetic and engaging contemporary jazz, performed by some of the finest musicians in the North East. These highly established players deliver top-drawer performance, with deep roots in improvisation, and extraordinarily high-quality musicianship that will be a surprise to no one who knows the work of these artists as individuals.

Described as ‘one of the leading lights in contemporary jazz’, Paul Edis is a natural melodist who finds the emotional resonance of every note. Rooted in the straight-ahead swinging tradition, his music has been played on the radio in the UK, US and Europe. Edis moved to London in 2020 after over 15 years based in the North East, where he established his first trio and sextet. He recorded various albums under his own name, with both his sextet and trio, before making the move South. He’s since established a new piano trio and regularly works with the most in demand drummers and bass players on the UK scene. For this gig he’ll be performing alongside virtuosos Andy Champion (double bass) and Steve Hanley (drums).

Join us for an audience with Sunderland Legends Peter Reid and Kevin Phillips. Peter Reid was voted as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1985 and came fourth in the World Soccer Player of the Year award, behind Michel Platini, Preben Elkjær and Diego Maradona. He also received his first senior England call-up that year and represented his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 1988. With Sunderland in 1995. He won promotion to the Premier League with the club on two occasions and achieved two seventh-place finishes in the top division. He combined his role at the Stadium of Light with the job as manager of the England U21 for a brief spell in 1999. His seven-year association with Sunderland ended in 2002 and he returned to management a year later, Phillips signed for First Division club Sunderland. In his first season he scored 35 goals in all competitions, the most goals in a season for a Sunderland player since the Second World War as well as being the league’s top goal scorer. Phillips scored 23 goals in 26 league games in the following season as Sunderland were crowned champions of the First Division. He received his first call up to the England national team in 1999. In the 1999–2000 season, Phillips scored 30 Premier League goals to earn himself a place in the PFA Team of the Year. This goal tally earned him the Golden Boot award as well as the European Golden Shoe.

Including Dilettante, the art-pop project of multi-instrumentalist Francesca Pidgeon, blending looped sax, fuzzy guitar and sharp song writing, and Isabel Maria, a self proclaimed ‘pensive popstar’ who pairs contagious melodies and piano-driven production with ineffably personal lyricism. Plus Vice Killer, a four-piece indie band from Peterlee, County Durham, whose debut album A Miners’ Capital (2025) was named in BBC Introducing’s Best of the Year. Founded over a century ago in a Yorkshire mining village, Grimethorpe Colliery Band achieved a worldwide reputation from the hit film Brassed Off and are regarded as one of Britain’s finest brass bands. Winning numerous band championships, Grimethorpe Colliery Band have played in such diverse settings as the FIFA World Cup, BBC Proms, Eurovision, the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony and, in 2024, performed alongside Coldplay as part of their headline set at Glastonbury Festival.

Brendan Cole and James Jordan are the original bad boys of ballroom. The Strictly Come Dancing icons are TV royalty. Brendan was the first Strictly Champion, winning the debut series in 2004, while James secured a second and third place finish, making the final twice during his eight-year run. The boys’ post-Strictly careers have been just as thrilling. Brendan and James are the double act who won’t be muzzled and whose opinions light up our screens. On their debut double act tour, fans can expect an explosive evening of unfiltered stories, behind-the-scenes bombshells, and brutally honest opinions. And, of course, there’ll also be some of the signature routines and moves that made them household names and ensure they remain among the biggest names in dance.

Nik Kershaw exploded onto the UK pop scene in 1984. A string of global hit singles including Wouldn’t it Be Good, The Riddle and I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me saw him languish for 62 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, making him the UK’s biggest selling solo artist that year. In 1985, he performed at Live Aid. After stepping out of the limelight to concentrate on writing and producing, Nik wrote Chesney Hawkes’s The One and Only and collaborated with Elton John, Lulu, Petula Clark, The Hollies, Ronan Keating, Jason Donovan, Let Loose, Sia, Imogen Heap, Gary Barlow and Bonnie Tyler. In 1998, Nik returned to performing and has been crafting critically acclaimed albums ever since. Now he’s ready to look back with an intimate evening to coincide with the release of his new book.
