In 1985, he performed at Live Aid. After stepping out of the limelight to concentrate on writing and producing, Nik wrote Chesney Hawkes’s The One and Only and collaborated with Elton John, Lulu, Petula Clark, The Hollies, Ronan Keating, Jason Donovan, Let Loose, Sia, Imogen Heap, Gary Barlow and Bonnie Tyler. In 1998, Nik returned to performing and has been crafting critically acclaimed albums ever since. Now he’s ready to look back with an intimate evening to coincide with the release of his new book. Expect songs, stories, and silliness from one of the nation’s most-loved performers.

Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a much-anticipated return to Gala Durham. For twenty-five years, Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black has brought bold new ballet to stages across the UK, creating and sharing original stories with dancers from around the world. This anniversary season celebrates a quarter of a century of innovation, mentoring and collaboration, while looking ahead to the future. This landmark double bill features Ingoma (2019), the choreographic debut of former Company dancer, Mthuthuzeli November. Inspired by the 1946 South African miners’ strike, a precursor to the anti-apartheid movement, Ingoma captures the suffering and resilience of Black miners and their communities, bringing rarely told stories to the ballet stage. The work won both the 2020 Olivier Award and the Black British Theatre Award for Best Dance Production. Alongside it comes a joyful new commission from Alvin Ailey royalty Hope Boykin, a two-time Bessie Award winner, making her UK choreographic debut. Boykin, who says “I make work and create environments from personal and lived experiences,” creates a celebratory piece especially for Ballet Black’s 25th year, a vibrant tribute to the company’s journey and a bold look towards its future. Audiences can expect Ballet Black’s signature blend of powerful storytelling, striking choreography and rich global influences, in a programme that honours the past while celebrating the future. Dave and Sapphire have worked backstage at the Old Forge for years. They’ve never felt the lure of the spotlight, they prefer the dark of the wings. But when they learn that the venue is closing, they are both shocked and angry. Despite dwindling audience numbers, unfunny stand-ups and a chaotic staff, they love this damp, old, crumbling local theatre. With money in short supply, they offer to stage their own extraordinary dramatic adventure, full of the characters they have met and scenes they have witnessed. Might it bring back the punters, or be a further reason to turn the Old Forge into luxury flats? In his audacious new comedy, Godber interrogates hope, ghosts and the power of performance as seen through the eyes of a cynical backstage duo. Durham Jazz Festival: Marvin Muonekè & Strictly Smokin' Big Band
This show brings together one of the rising stars on the UK jazz scene with one of the North East’s most beloved acts. Marvin Muoneké is a vocalist, songwriter, arranger, trumpeter and recording artist with a beautifully rich, deep and smooth voice. Marvin brings classic sounds to modern audiences with charisma, elegance and an unmistakable presence and passion for storytelling through song. His love for jazz began at age four after hearing Louis Jordan’s ’Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby’ in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. As a teen, he immersed himself in the music of early jazz legends like Jelly Roll Morton and Don Redman and his passion for the musical art form flourished, later joining the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2014 under Mark Armstrong. Nominated in 2024 at the Boisdale Music Awards for Jazz Artist Of The Year, Marvin has built a fearsome reputation around the South of England and is now regularly seen in major jazz venues in London. He has featured on TV in both The Voice and Britain’s got Talent and has released two albums with a third currently in production. Hailed by JazzFM as ‘A new vocal sensation in the UK’ and described by Jazzwise as ‘A singing superstar in the making…a big man with a big voice and an even bigger stage presence’, he is a captivating performer, musician and band leader with an assurance that belies his youth. Strictly Smokin’ Big Band, led by Michael Lamb, is a powerhouse ensemble that prides itself on the versatility of its performance: originally rooted in swing, but also renowned for performing new, original, and contemporary material. It is the only ensemble of its kind in the North of England and was recently hailed by Jazzwise Magaine as “reinventing the big band.” With “compelling writing, tear-away execution, and a bevy of star guests excelling” (Jazzwise Magazine), the band brings a fresh energy to every stage they play. Their repertoire spans everything from classic swing to bold, modern compositions, blending tradition with innovation in a way that keeps audiences engaged and excited. Their acclaimed concert programmes—including Harlem ’58, Ella & Ellington, and Time After Time—demonstrate their ability to honour jazz heritage while pushing the genre forward.

Daniel Kitson - Thrum

Daniel Kitson - Thrum

16 Sept 2026 - 18 Nov 2026

There’s the sound of somewhere else and the permanence of a plant pot and the ubiquity of a phrase and the heartbreaking brevity of a very long time. There’s figs and worms and an old dog rejecting a blanket. There’s a woman, on a train, wearing a badge. There’s the first beep of a smoke alarm and there’s a daffodil in December and there’s the condition of fruit. There’s a hand in bed and there’s stuff on the stairs and there’s a mark on my jumper and there’s a massive tree in storage on a farm in Kent. There’s nothing to say and there’s the thought of rotting and there’s the name of a feeling and there’s the smell of tobacco. There’s the twelfth floor of a hotel and the far end of a platform at Tamworth train station. There’s a duty to act and there’s a resistance to growth and there’s a new place up the road and there’s a completely redundant volume control. There’s a toilet in Hong Kong and a coffee shop in Melbourne and the passage of light through a building and deliberately making things much more difficult than they actually need to be. And. There’s music, more or less throughout, at least two funny voices and upwards of three jokes.
