Hi Res Heart at the Samuel Worth Chapel
Hi Res Heart [https://hiresheart.org/] is an improvising jazz group where spaciousness and fire co-exist. Even when the music is at its most abstract, the spirit of the blues is never too far away. The horns are direct and melodic in an open ended flow which reacts to the moment, while the unusual percussion set up of drum set, hand percussion and vibraphone provides an ever changing textural and rhythmic counterpoint. For this performance at Samuel Worth the group is joined by a solo dancer, and we will be taking full advantage of the interior of the chapel to project specially created video making the show a full scale multimedia performance. The group consists of: Charlotte Keeffe (trumpet and flugelhorn), Martin Archer (saxophones), Michael Bardon (double bass), Martin Pyne (drums, percussion, vibraphone) with Melanie Little (dance) and, Nick Shelton (video). The chemistry is magical, the musicianship is second to none, and the interchange between all seeps in like fast blood as spectacular - Lee Henderson, Big Beautiful Noise Cherish these sounds, for their creators indeed make them sing" - Darren Bergstein, Downtown Music Gallery, New York A circus of sounds where even the riot is riotous fun, the ridiculous made into gravitas, improvisation turned into chamber music. Cemetery Sessions Present Isis Moray, Kalter & Vera Sacra
Enter the ethereal and immersive world of experimental sound as Cemetery Sessions returns to the Samuel Worth Chapel with a triple bill of dark electronics, haunting vocals, and sonic devotion. Isis Moray [https://isismoray.com/about] is the solo project of artist and musician Jade Lauren, with releases on With Bells, Holy Crow Records, and an upcoming album on Castles In Space. Her live sets weave dark ambience and hard-edged techno with layered, transcendent vocals - a hypnotic blend of electronic mysticism and emotional depth that mesmerises audiences. Kalter are an electronic duo channelling the drifting textures of shoegaze and fusing them with the raw edge of industrial sound. Their work explores the tension between beauty and decay, softness and distortion - a sonic collision that feels both immersive and cinematic. James Blackshaw at the Samuel Worth Chapel
Inspired by the 60s Takoma school of American primitive guitar, minimalist composers and European classical music, James Blackshaw has been highly regarded for his works for solo acoustic guitar since his debut album in 2003, employing fingerpicking techniques to create drones, overtones and repeating patterns, alongside a strong inclination for melody, to conjure instrumental music that is both intelligent, hypnotic and emotional. Blackshaw has collaborated with Lubomyr Melnyk, performed and recorded as a member of Current 93 and with Jozef Van Wissem as Brethren of the Free Spirit and toured and played shows with artists such as Swans (whose Michael Gira signed Blackshaw to his Young God label to release two albums in 2009 and 2010), Grails, Sir Richard Bishop, Jose Gonzales, Peter Walker, Alex De Grassi and Hauschka. In 2024, he self-released his first album in nine years, Unraveling in Your Hands. In an 8.0 review, Pitchfork called it the most straightforwardly beautiful and affecting record he has made since 2010s All Is Falling, noting of the 27-minute title track: It would be remarkable even if it wasnt a single-take recording; that it is, and also played through injury, makes the level of focus and expression feel nothing short of aspirational. Sarah McQuaid

Sarah McQuaid

15 Sept 2025 - 30 Apr 2026

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post. With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally. Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

Bob Drake, Arch Garrison and VLVE at The Samuel Worth Chapel
Bob Drake, Arch Garrison and VLVE at The Samuel Worth Chapel Presented by Sheffield General Cemetery Trust and Buds & Spawn Bob Drake Born and raised in the Midwest USA and now resident in the South of France, Bob was a founding member of avant-rock heroes Thinking Plague in the 1980s, has been a member of the 5uu's, The Science Group, Vril, the Peter Blegvad Quintet and many others, but it is with his series of solo recordings between 1994 and the present that he has really found his voice as a pedlar of individual, avant-garde, but always highly melodic tales of anthropomorphic animals, hauntings, geology, holy wells, astronomy... the list goes on, all performed by himself. an alarmingly fertile basin of creativity and collaged, kitchen-sink songcraft. Pitchfork Media https://bdrak.com/ https://bdstudio.bandcamp.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@bob-drac VLV What is VLV? Folk lullabies re-imagined by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Found-sound collages interrupted by Welsh language orations and sudden outbursts of fuzz bass. Gleaming synthpop workouts that collapse into swirling dreamscapes of sax and harp. Tiny sounds opening out onto the epic. Hi-tech and no-tech, deployed with equal measures of discipline and abandon. Carefully sculpted disorder. Uncanny geometries of noise and melody. Dizzy and gleeful and drawn in notebooks. That is VLV. VLV started out as the outlet for composer/performer Chle Heringtons compositional work using text and image as the starting point for scores. She collects sounds and diagrams, composing predominantly for bassoon, saxes, electronics and found sounds to explore synaesthetic memory and collective experience. The performance is mesmeric and improvisational, ranging from Aphex Twin abstractions to childlike songs with arresting lyrics, in the vein of Brian Enos vocal works Prog https://valvemusic.bandcamp.com https://www.facebook.com/valvemusic www.valve.cloud [//www.valve.cloud] www.chloeherington.com [//www.chloeherington.com] Arch Garrison North Sea Radio Orchestras musical director, composer and accomplished guitarist Craig Fortnam brings his weird folk solo project to Sheffield once again. Exploring his fascination with Englands ancient landscape and singing intricate songs about Roman roads, ditches and mounds, Thames Fluvius. Utterly bewitching. Arch Garrison prove that less can be more, and that our limitations are often the very things that set us free. The Quietus Craig has spent the last 20 years composing, performing and producing albums; whether as North Sea Radio Orchestra, as Arch Garrison or under his own name. All these projects have Craigs strong and unique personal sound; virtuosic nylon-string guitar with a strong emphasis on melody and chord, be it with strings/wind/percussion/organ (North Sea Radio Orchestra), the psych-folk of Arch Garrison with its wobbly synths/organ and guitar or his solo material which combines all these elements. Craigs music is described as English in sound with reviewers comparing him to Robert Wyatt, Vaughan-Williams, Cardiacs, Syd Barrett, and Vernon Elliott. Craigs most recent release was the new studio album from North Sea Radio Orchestra Special Powers, available now from Bandcamp. https://archgarrison1.bandcamp.com/ https://northsearadioorchestra.bandcamp.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@craigfortnam8602 12/6 plus booking fee. Heritage Open Days Talk | How the Church Lost the Plot: A History of Victorian Cemeteries
As part of Heritage Open Days, join Dr Julie Rugg from the University of York, for a captivating exploration into the politics, power, and profits of Victorian burial. Drawing on decades of research into cemeteries and cemetery companies, Dr Rugg will uncover how the Burial Acts of the mid-19th century secured the Church of Englands dominance in burial provision, vastly increasing its income and influence. This privileged position, however, did not go unchallenged and over time, through determined and often heated lobbying, the Churchs control began to erode. With wit and insight, Dr Rugg will reveal how this battle for burial rights played out, and how it shaped the very cemeteries we walk through today. Her talk also highlights how cemeteries themselves have rich and complex biographies" - layered histories that reflect wider social, religious, and political change. A must for anyone interested in Victorian history, heritage, or the untold stories behind our burial grounds. Their lyrics are absolutely definable as poetry - FATEA NINA HARRIES - BASSIST/VOCALIST Composing original material for the double bass and voice, her music and technique has both an ethereal and an earthy modernist sound. As well as her work as a soloist, Nina is involved in several different projects, most recently touring the globe in Akram Khans swansong dance Xenos, and featuring on Anoushka Shankars new EP Love Letters. Her debut, self-titled album was released in September 2019.
